I wonder how Natalie would have reacted when she learned Alex was married and considered her relationship with Ryan as a 'parenthesis'. Interesting that both women in the context of an arguement with him referred to him as being immature. In this scene, Natalie said Ryan was acting like a 12 year old and Alex in their final phone conversation said, "You don't even know what you want...Well, I am an adult (in a tone that implied that he was acting in a way that wasn't that), so if you want to see me again, call".

Pretty sure it’s her surroundings. Yes it’s important to separate business from personal, but later we see in the movie (during the virtual meeting with Samuels) she’s sucking down her emotions/empathy to behave in a soulless way.
At 23, that’d probably have some effect with how you view life outside your job so I think she was looking for some semblance of ‘true love’ or humanity from someone she probably looks up to in a way. She doesn’t have the power to be like Ryan (Clooney) and use the people manipulatively that she fires, thus her world is crumbling before it’s time to rebuild a new way of seeing life. I also see their relationship as father and daughter, given how he comforts her and accepts her various apologies, especially since in the book, he’s dying.

Unless he’s one of those people who has an open mind to what others think they should do... in both cases, it wasn’t her fault. In the movie it’s all about how we relate to each other.
