A few years ago, I was a month away from fusion surgery on my L5-S1, completely disabled, and found a Bob and Brad video talking about the tennis ball to work the piriformis. It gave immediate relief and now I'm working, golfing, and enjoying life. Thank you Bob and Brad!
I use the small ball by simply standing against the wall and positioning the ball in the sore spot directly while moving my body around the tight spots. They are easy to feel because they are hard knots. It may take a few days to loosen completely. Per my therapist I use a firm ball.
@@jeremiahshine That is very relevant in my situation. I'm going through this right now for the last year. Never been so frustrated in my entire life trying to get rid of this piriformis syndrome. Finally found what helps me the most. Rolling on the tennis ball like your guys showed, and also crossing my one leg over the other while rolling. When you find the right spot, stay on it for 15 seconds, 3 times a day. Finally it's starting to go away! Thanks guys for all of your helpful videos!
For about 5 years I had what was diagnosed as sciatica. It was awful, and changed my life significantly. But then a physical therapist, on a hunch, suggested that I do the first stretch in the video. The pain went away immediately, and I've never had a problem since. I do the stretch every day to make sure the pain doesn't come back.
I’m in love with you guys! I had a bad bout of sciatica a few years ago. It was horrible, I thought it was the end of living an active life. After it showed on an MRI and I was told to seek pain management (injections) by a specialist some distance away, I opted for the P/T option. However, I watched one of your many related videos and saw YOUR massage gun, ordered it and in less than 2 days of use a few times a day, my sciatica went away! It was miraculous after having suffered with it for some time before this, the excruciating pain traveled down through my leg, worsened my knee pain and went down into my foot and toes resulting in “floppy foot” and shortening that leg, throwing off my hip, my balance and gait. I could not walk, stand or sit for long. I tell my friends about your practice and informative videos then and now that saved my active life. I now practice your exercises even before getting out of bed daily, among other exercises like swimming and yoga. Thank you for all you guys do and Bob, keep at your healing and here’s some extra love for you!
After three weeks of pain and difficulty with sitting, walking, and sleeping - the exercises demonstrated in this video gave me relief within a few days - I am astonished and very grateful!!! Thank you both and your crew.
I have been experiencing some pretty intense sciatica & hip/piriformis pain after having my 4th baby. I have been working with the massage therapist & chiropractor to try and get relief but nothing has been more helpful than following your videos regarding sciatica and the piriformis syndrome. Thank you so much for all the education you are providing. Chances are, I would have spent hundreds more dollars and countless minutes away from my family searching for answers. Your videos are helpful, funny and I'm so thankful for what you do!
I am experiencing severe sicatica pain as well after having a baby. My baby is 8 mnth old and I started having this issue since he was 6 mnth old, so almost two months now I have difficulty sitting, and have shooting pain when I wake up and during the day. Painkillers don't work at all and its so hard with an active baby. Doctor wants me to go to Physical Therapy if the painkillers don't work. But I have been watching all these videos trying to make sure I have piriformis and not herniated disk. My pain starts just above the tail bone slightly to the left radiating down to my ankle. This is the worst pain and one of the hardest phase of my life.
Just went and tried the Second stretch and i didnt think it did anything but man.. when i stood up the pain was so much better, ill most certainly be doing this stretch a lot more often, can't thank you enough for teaching it to me.
I had this in late spring. I woke up with it one morning & literally couldn’t walk. I was at a “shuffle”. I waited 3 wks, hoping it would ease up. It didn’t, so I went to my primary. They recommended PT, but that took 5 wks just to get in. I did your exercises & by the time I was able to go to PT, I canceled it. But I had this about 9 weeks, before it finally eased it. It started on the left side, and then moved to the right side. It was awful!! Thank you so much for these videos! 🙏
Thats great! I'm glad u are good now. I do wonder if I'm having an episode of Puriformis or Sciatica. Pain mostly on my right butt..it feels deep.. like a tight musle ... but sometimes I feel on both sides ( left and right butt) the achiness feels like it radiates down my butt. It gets worse with cold and stress . I notice if i get super worried it amplifies the pain. Clearly something ain't right. I also had pain on my inner thiegh for 2 days but now it's going away.... I still have pain in the butt.
My pain started down the left side near my calf and worked it’s way up! And then into my groin. So painful… my massage therapist rescued me by loosening my piriformus via my buttocks. Now I need to keep it flexible so thanks for these options. I also learned I am tightening it up by trying to do lotus pose without supporting my knees and sitting in figure four on the couch! Oh boy body mechanics are important and so are both of you!
Great video - what about those of us who have sciatica, piriformas syndrome, osteoarthritis, pinched nerve, herniated disc and fibromyalgia. I am sure I’m not the only one with multiple diagnoses. Thank you for your great work!!
Thank you so much!! I’ve had a pinched/tight piriformis for 4 days. I have slept on the couch with my knee bent up just to get relief. I wish I had found this video the day it came out!!
You guys changed my life with all the good advice you give. I had a terribly painful period earlier this year with right hip arthritis pain flare ups and pain in my glute muscles that kept me from sleeping well. Just walking was painful. I am still not sure if it was piriformis syndrome or true sciatica or a little of both. Your advice and information was so helpful. I am 100% recovered after 6 months of regular weight bearing exercises for the body including lots of core strengthening (squats and lunges), and also from yoga and spin cycle classes. I feel strong, flexible, have good balance and best of all, I am finally pain free again. Thank you so much for all you do!!
I'm sending Bob lots of love, prayers, and healing vibes! I hope he's doing ok! Thank you BOTH for all the incredible work that you've done and continue to do!!!! You have certainly made a positive impact in my life!!!!!💞💓💞💓💞
Holy crap i commented before actually watching this video and doing the stretches, and i should say they both deserve a nobel prize for the amount of people that they had helped without charging a dime on the internet!
Thank you, thank you, thank you ! I had piriformis pain to the point where I literally couldn't walk. Your stretch with lying in my stomach and bending up my leg took the pain away. I also use a hand held massager. ( I do not have the gun). God bless you both. Bob, wishing you the best of health and Brad, continue to be the best friend that you are !
I had a shot in my back for serious sciatica pain. I have a high tolerance to pain and that pain was way over the top. Doc said the pain would return within a year, but here I am almost 5 years later and it's just started up again. So yes, thank you for these exercises! They've been helpful along with a couple I remembered from my PT several years back. I am hopeful these exercises will put off the surgery for a while! Thank you ever so much for all the help you've given to those of us out here who can use it! Best regards always.
I wanted to thank you both. I went from very bad #7 (no sleeping crazy pain) to about a #1 pain in a week following your exercises and taking the medications from the doctor. 2 days without medication now, but still using your stretching exercise suggestion. So Thank you Bob and Thank you Brad!
I believe the road kill position is the one that has given me the upper hip/ lower back pain that comes and goes. It's my favorite position to sleep in. I have some pain currently and came looking for your suggestions as they have been valuable and extremely helpful to me over the years. Stay Blessed.
I have been in pain for years. Chiropractic helped some BUT what I have learned from you has SAVED me and my job. I am 65 and my left side was in pain so much that I was taking bayer back and body 2 pills am then pm everyday for a year plus.. THEN i saw you.... now, no pills, sleep well, work well on feet 8 hours a day. IF I feel it a bit tight, i go sit down for five min. And do the ankle on the knee trick.. works and I go back to work!!! Love you guys, thank you for helping me.
i had thought i had reoccurring sciatica issues until i saw this video! i rarely have lower back pain unless i am putting a lot of physical stress on my body. at night when i am trying to sleep, my outer right buttock and upper thigh hurt a LOT so i attempt to lift the leg to sleep. i feel it in the morning and while walking, periodically throughout the day. i am a person who loves to sit cross legged ALWAYS- but for the past 3 months that has been far more difficult. im 40 and fairly active. i tried your pigeon pose stretch and it hurt like a bitch! but i held it and even leaned into it toward the side for about 30 seconds. i was sceptical until i stood up and the pain vanished entirely. i am so poor and your videos always save me. unbelievable. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us from the bottom of my heart.
You guys’ channel had made such an improvement in my life, I can’t thank you two enough for that. Bob, I hope you get better soon, I’m sending all the positive vibes your way! And don’t worry too much about the speech situation; I’m not even a native English speaker and I understood everything you said very well, keep the videos coming 💕
Thank you Bob & Brad the piriformis exercise are very helpful. Those people who have the same problems should benefit from their video and I’m sure you will thank them.
I have been dealing with piriformis for over a year, thinking it was sciatica. I tried your exercises last night and can now move almost pain free! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Now if you can figure out what to do with my knee that I "crunched" last week jumping off the tailgate of our pickup truck.........Best wishes and prayers, Bob, for a speedy and complete recovery.
I had those symptoms from last month. I am doing excercises that you told in your videos. It is helpful to me . I feel the difference. If I sit for more than 5min it hurts. I hope it is curable. Thankyou and love you ❤. I pray for the Bob uncle.
You guys are the best. After 3 months of dealing with piriformis syndrome your roadkill maneuver solved the problem almost immediately. Definite significant relief the first time I tried it after watching your segment. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
you guys helped me when I injured my back vine now I'm almost fully recovered thanks to you🙂🙂but now I have a problem with piriformis and I'm watching you, I hope it will be useful again
I couldn't sit nore lay on my back without getting electroshocks in my hip and glut. Started walking more and more awkwardly. My quality of life was disappearing fast. Doctors didn't know what I had and were prescribing me a plethora of painkillers. The roadkill exercise fixed it! You guys are the best! 🥰
Dear Bob , all our wishes with you , you videos have helped us over the years. And yes without a doubt you and Brad are the most famous PTs on internet ❤
I've been bouncing around among several doctors for six years trying to get rid of the pain in my right glute. Will try some of these. I sometimes sleep on my stomach with my leg bent way up, but it is temporary relief.
Mind readers! Not only are you guys the two most famous physical therapist on the internet but you must also have psychic abilities. I have been experiencing this pretty bad today. Thank you for the help.
@SunshineGirl: haha,...same here. And the first exercise with the ball helped me, after having pain for a long time. I think too they got some vibes that we need them. LOL ♥
So happy I stumbled onto your channel. I've been watching a number of your videos the past couple of days. Every day this week its been the same thing. I get out of bed with no pain. Then after 1 to 2 min the pain hits me hard deep in my left glute, then after 30 to 90 min from the onset of the pain, it goes away gradually and then is gone for the rest of day. I have a very physical job and nothing i do at work reaggravates anything. Thank you for these videos. I'll be performing some your tips on trying to determine what the root of the pain is and then try your recommended stretches.
I'm 36 and subscribed recently. I needed these videos. My tibia is twisted (from birth, it seems) and I have already been told I need surgeries in my tibia AND my big toe. I really want to go without surgery bdcause my father is about to have his 8th(!) consecutive surgery for his artificial hip. It's so gruesome and he used to run marathons. I really want to avoid surgery like the plague
I had what i thought was sciatica for -I kid you not- 18 years. Yoga has been helping, and I unknowingly use the roadkill position while sleeping. But now I know it is the piriformis! Thank you!
Guys!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. You have saved my life. I have had pain in the muscles in my legs for years and was getting worse. To the point I almost could not walk. I was stretching for the last year but it didn't really help........Thanks to you I realized it was my fascia which I believe I damaged at the gym years ago. I started using the technique with the tennis ball and I AM ALMOST PAIN FREE AND CAN WALK NORMALLY AFTER ONLY 1 WEEK!!!!! With more time I know I will be back 100% and realize my dream of going to Venice. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
I have had “sciatica” with leg pain in my left calf 24/7 for 10 years and been on Tramadol most of the time which is the only thing to relieve my pain, without it I would be in excruciating agony. I have had and MRI which diagnosed nothing, spent thousands on Physio, therapists etc. I also have excruciating pain in my left butt cheek which I’ve found to be my Piriformis and now I’ve found you guys and pray that I can have total relief soon after I try the above stretches.
Many prayers for you Bob !!! I've been watching you both for years. Always great advise. I had to revisit this after injuring my periformus muscle again.
I’m literally dealing with this pain right now. The part that attaches to the hip literally feels like it’s clicking/shifting and maaan does that hurt when it happens. It usually happens when I’m walking upstairs randomly. I hope this video helps 🤞🏾
There’s a very good chance that your hip or your femur head is out or your sacrum. You need to see a chiropractor. That’s my problem and the only way to stop it from spasming is to have my sacrum put back in place and sometimes my femur head. The stretches don’t work for me, they never have. I’ve had this problem for over 50 years. When you look for a chiropractor find one that you trust, one who is recommended to you by someone who is not only seeing one but is having a good experience with them. If you have any Hypermobility diseases like Ehlers-Danlos or hyper mobile joint disease, some of the stretches shown in this video would actually make your condition worse. So do be careful.
Great video. I've figured out from several of your videos that this is the cause of my sciatica. That muscle is very tight on my left side. These are some great stretches. I can feel the difference immediately.
Thank you so much for this content! As a personal trainer and massage therapist I love having a channel I can direct my clients to after our sessions! I don’t always have time to delineate aftercare (unfortunately). But you guys are a phenomenal resource! Thank you so much 🙏🏼♥️
I not sure if I have sciatica but the exercises here sure help my back. I fell having bad injury to my spine, Not fun nope, but I lose a bunch of weight and walking it be my saving grace. But I have pain and pain is not good. So I get an ice pack and find these exercises. Its amazing and taking a walk is so nice everyday.. It be my goal to keep my weight down, and exercise my way through.. I swim laps I get numb swimming laps, its so distressing, so I don't kick as much, but I sure love swimming.. Thank you so much.
I don’t even know how I ended up here, but I love it! This is just what I needed! I call it “my angry hip”, and had no idea what was actually going on even tho a lot of these moves help me. Y’all are great!
OMG I saw this video this morning and tried with a rolled bedspread on my bed. The pain subsided and I m happily watching a movie with my son and going to buy my foam roller and tennis ball tomorrow! Thank you so much🥰 New subscriber👍
This is great! I started running several years ago, clocking upwards of 20 miles per week. My biggest fear was knee pain. To my surprise, I have absolutely no knee pain, but I developed pain in my right glute (to name one of many aches and pains). I figured out the first stretch on my own, and it really fires my glute which I now know is piriformis pain, thanks to your video. However, I will add the deep tissue work to my stretch routine because the first stretch, while good, doesn't get rid of the tightness entirely. I had to take a long break from running because of injury. Running quickly reveals any and all pathologies, and I know that piriformis tightness is due to issues with my running form. I also have tightness in my right hip flexor which I am sure is related to tightness in my right piriformis, but I am happy to say I have been back to running for nearly two months and feeling really great!
This helped me understand the muscle position better and relate it to some of the yoga movements I had learned years ago in Svaroopa yoga classes! Thank you!!
Your audience is grateful for the two of you! Thank you for keeping your exercises easy and for remembering people who might have arthritis or other conditions for whom moving is painful or limited. Bob, you are doing GREAT-strong like bull!!
OMG Thought i had sciatica but found out on your other videos about the piriformis test. Used my massage gun on the area as shown and the pain has decreased by 60%. Liked and Subbed Thanks so much. This is what youtube should be for.
Dr. Bob and Dr. Brad thank you for the advice! Relief did come immediately. You guys came highly recommended by runners on RUclips who use your PT techniques to relieve aches and pains that occasionally come from running
Rideshare driver driving too much. Been watching you guys for awhile, just happen to have needed this today big time! Thank you so much for all you guys do! Best Wishes and Be Well Bob! ❤☮🙏
Oh yes, my physio told me this was from doing cycling and kicking, he said it gives the muscle a tendency to knot up, so it's important to stretch even more if you're doing sports that have this kind of movement.
I've just found you guys and I love you! The help you offer everyday people is amazing. I'm going to follow several of your videos and see how they help me (they certainly can't hurt). Thank you for making PT accessible for everyone!
Thank you for this video going to try these today I have been having hip pain first on my right side it got better now it’s on my left side very frustrating! You guys are great! I truly appreciate your knowledge and willing to share it with all of us!
Thanks for providing a few more stretches. I should be doing all of them regularly. Are there activities I should avoid that lead to false sciatica? BTW, it seems that Bob's condition is improving. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Ah, it’s so nice to see Bob again! I’m so glad ❤️ seems like his ataxia isn’t as bad as it was-kudos! I have a question: I don’t think it’s my piriformis-what else could it be? It hurts when I’m climbing the stairs, or when I cross my legs like the number 4, laying supine, doesn’t hurt when pulling towards my chest but pushing the knee down. I’m not finding what’s causing that-help?
I have a hip replacement. My orthopedist told me NOT to do pigeon pose. It would be a great service to your followers if you would include contraindications for replaced joints on pertinent exercises. Thanks much for all your great tips and exercises.
When a person has both total hip replacements who have piafomis issues on both sides. Are these exercises you are doing good for people with total hip replacement. Thank you for your great programs. May Bob get better with his symptoms. God be with you both.
I didn't know what this ache was and now I do. I always put a ball underneath the pain and roll it out and it disappears until the next time it strikes.
Bob and Brad, thanks for your online treatments! It really helps me get back on the road and running when I've encountered some aches and pain, especially on the back-end recently
This gotta be what I’m dealing with. My couches have gotten so bad that it made me sit the way you sat before the end of the video. I’ve been working on sitting straighter and it helps to some extent. Will try the tennis ball thing. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the demonstration into pigeon pose that isn't from someone who is already bendy. I've never seen it done quite like that and it's exactly what I needed to see. I might be able to get some sleep now having stretched it a bit. I was starting to worry that maybe I have a labral tear, but getting the piriformis moving has helped relieve some pain.
Love you guys! As oneself might tend to feel serious about problems like this, your unserious, but very helpful and informative advices, just made me more relaxed, happy and more confident.
I have this pain often but a few years ago it was very severe and thought it was an ovarian cyst. After many tests that didn't show anything, I went to the chiropractor where he took the pain away and I found it it was my piriformis.
I have found so many helpful techniques from your videos. Thank you for bringing a friendly, approachable presence to dealing with the wide variety of physical challenges and resulting aches from a more sedentary life over this way. 👍 Love and support to Bob. ❤
Thanks, guys. I hurt my back lifting my 90-yo father, and you helped me so much. Very grateful! That color looks great on you, Bob! Thanks for the demos, Brad. “Roadkill” did the trick! 😉

You have certainly made a positive impact in my life!!!!!💞💓💞💓💞
Thank you!
BOB AND BRAD IS THE TWO MOST FAMOUS PHYSICAL THERAPIST ON THE INTERNET!!
These stretches and things really helped alleviate my pain. Thank you!
Sorry to hear that . I pray for Bob to get well soon .Your videos helped me and my family and friends unbelievably . Thank you.
I believe the road kill position is the one that has given me the upper hip/ lower back pain that comes and goes. It's my favorite position to sleep in. I have some pain currently and came looking for your suggestions as they have been valuable and extremely helpful to me over the years. Stay Blessed.
Good luck!
So happy we could help!
Sending get well wishes to Bob. Love all the help you both give to us, so we are hoping for your recovery now.
Hope and pray that you feel better soon, Bob🙏🙏
Sorry to hear about the ataxia. Hope it isn't too debilitating. Keep up the great videos.
This was a very timely post for me! Sorry to read Bob is dealing with Ataxia, I wish you well!
Happy we could help, thank you!
I have had hip and leg pain for 3 weeks. After applying your stretching methods my pain is reduced tremendously
Glad we got it out in time!
@SunshineGirl: haha,...same here. And the first exercise with the ball helped me, after having pain for a long time. I think too they got some vibes that we need them. LOL ♥
Bob , praying for you. Thank you Brad & Bob for all your time sharing these amazing videos. 🏆
Thanks!
Good luck!
Your channel just popped up after about a year and I was delighted to see you both again and send you my very best wishes.
Praying for you both, and especially for Bob.❤ thanks for all your help.
Any updates? Hope u are good now.
Unfortunately not I’ve been so busy with work I haven’t really done enough consistently however I will get soon as I can for my health’s sake
Just one stretch and pain is gone! This is the most useful video that i have ever seeb on the internet
Glad it helped!
Prayers for a speedy recovery.
Thanks!
Many prayers for you Bob !!! I've been watching you both for years. Always great advise. I had to revisit this after injuring my periformus muscle again.
That last stretch nailed it for me. Pain dissapeared....for now.
I’m literally dealing with this pain right now. The part that attaches to the hip literally feels like it’s clicking/shifting and maaan does that hurt when it happens. It usually happens when I’m walking upstairs randomly. I hope this video helps 🤞🏾
Good luck!
Yes I have hyper mobility and wonder if I have a post menopausal tendency for ehler danlos syndrome
Thank you so much🥰
New subscriber👍
Thank you!!
Glad we could help!
These guys are awesome, helped me with a lot of my injuries more than my regular doctors.
We appreciate that!
Dr.
Hi Bob and Brad I suffer from this for weeks, pain in the butt literally 😊thanks for the stretches, I just did some of them. Hugs from Texas
Thank you so much for this, I really needed this today. Best wishes to Bob for healing. Thanks for all you do.
Wow! did you make this video for me? Thanks Bob and Brad.
Of course, glad we could help!
So good to see you both in this one. Hope you’re both well.
So glad I know who to turn to when things go wonky with my body! This is exactly what I needed. Will start these exercises tonight.
Yet another out of the ball park fix from Bob and Brad ! Thank you!
Oh yes, my physio told me this was from doing cycling and kicking, he said it gives the muscle a tendency to knot up, so it's important to stretch even more if you're doing sports that have this kind of movement.
Finally some relief. I’m binging on these and feeling better. Thanks
Ditched the chiropractor and started going to youtube and the gym lol
Well, thanks for watching!
Prayers for Bob!!
Thanks for providing a few more stretches. I should be doing all of them regularly. Are there activities I should avoid that lead to false sciatica? BTW, it seems that Bob's condition is improving. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
BOB!!! Glad to see you back!!! Hope you continue to get better
Thanks for bringing this to the Table ,God Bless !
Of course!
Feel better Bob ❣
This gotta be what I’m dealing with. My couches have gotten so bad that it made me sit the way you sat before the end of the video. I’ve been working on sitting straighter and it helps to some extent. Will try the tennis ball thing. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the demonstration into pigeon pose that isn't from someone who is already bendy. I've never seen it done quite like that and it's exactly what I needed to see. I might be able to get some sleep now having stretched it a bit. I was starting to worry that maybe I have a labral tear, but getting the piriformis moving has helped relieve some pain.
Glad it was helpful!
I wasn't paying attention to your speech until you told us. Here's hoping it will get better soon.
Thanks for the timely video. Going to try this out asap. Prayers for Bob's continued recovery
Hope this helps!
Thank you so much for the information I feel better than yesterday
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I just purchased one of your massage guns, which I have not used yet.
Thank you, so practical and very effective
Perfect!
Please don’t stop making these videos! God bless Bob
