Yes, you can add a background image in Maya or in compositing. In the mia_physicalsky node you'll find an option to "Use Background" along with an associated Background input that will allow you to do it. You can also just add some geo (plane, cylinder, sphere) to map a background onto and make sure it's not casting or receiving shadows in it's rendering attributes and that will work too.
I was having the exact same problem. I found that delteing ALL of the light sets in the outliner solved it. Prior, I was only deleting the duplicates, which caused the same error over and over.
This video covers the basics of using Physical Sun and Sky from the beginning - 1:09 is basically it, just click create, then rotate the sun direction so it's in the camera view. That's one of the beautiful things about this lighting setup, it's very simple to setup and tune.
To follow up on this in case anyone else has the issue - the main problem is that SSS doesn't include indirect lighting by default, so you need to enable it in the lightmap sample section for the lmap node on the SSS shading group. Also, if the lighting is really bright you may need to turn off screen composite in the algorithm control section of the SSS shader so that MR doesn't clamp values. For more detailed info, digital tutors has a video that covers this and that's where my info came from.
Thanks for your great tutorial, just have a question about the sky and sun, is it possible to put background(like a plane image) in the physical sun and sky setting?
Check your reflectivity settings - if those are up kind of high you'd get a bluish-chrome look due to the blue sky. By default many materials start out 50% reflective, which is quite high. If that's not it, I've also seen a few funky things when using subsurface scattering - are you using SSS?
Yeah, I think this is where my problem starts: I don't get a mia_physicalsky1 tab at all. I only get "sunDirection" "sunShape" and "defaultLightSet" tabs, and under them there is no section for sky either...
I'm not positive this is it, but try selecting the sunDirection light in the outliner and then open the attribute editor. Select the mia_physicalsky1 tab and scroll down to the bottom. Click the Update Camera Connections button and see if that fixes it for you. I'm not sure why you're not seeing that connection button change states though... Let me know if that doesn't help and I'll help you troubleshoot it further.
When I create Physical sun&sky, it renders my sky black. (It actually gives error: setAttr: Not enough data was provided. The last 0 items will be skipped.) I also noticed it doesn't make the node connection button next to the "Create Sun&Sky" available either. Do you have any idea why that might happen?
whenever i apply my sun and sky shader my character (sss material) it becomes almost completely flat grey, I have overcome this problem before but I''ve forgoten how to fix it? help?
If you create a new scene and add physical sun & sky does it work properly? If it works in other scene files, you could try a couple of things: 1 try using file-optimize scene size to delete orphan nodes that my be causing the creation issue 2 select and export your objects into a new mb and try adding the physical sun sky to that scene If physical sun & sky doesn't work in any scene, restart computer. If still not, try getting the latest hotfix or reinstalling maya
Sorry about the lag on the reply. It should just work right out of the gate for you if you've rotated the light so it's looking at the camera. Maybe make sure you haven't zeroed out the sun intensity or scale and that you don't have geometry or image planes blocking the area where the sun should be. Let me know if that's not it and I'll try to help you further.
pls , can anyone tell me HOW CAN I PUT ANOTHER SOURCER LIGHT IN THE SCENE, WITH "PHYSICAL SUN&SKY"?? cas it doesnt work...wont render any lights; JUST THE SUN...PLSSS

Yes it was working in another scene so I exported everything to a new scene. I wonder what went wrong there... Thanks very much for your help!

Great tutorial buddy! Keep em coming :D
Thanks for the video, really helpful.

Thanks so much this helped a lot!
In your sss "Lightmap Sample" attributes:
Turn ON "Include indirect lighting".
Then, in the "Algorithm Control" section, turn OFF "Screen Composite".

@vinnyargentina do you know why, when I set up my sky and sun, my subject becomes a bluish-chrome? I can't figure out how to fix this?
liked, fav and subscribed ! =D
this helped alot. thank you very much!

thank you dude! you help me a a lot Thank you so much!!!

THAK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
thanks! very helpful
Hey, thanks for the reply, but I moved over to Blender ever since :)
how do i get the guide on screen for the render image size to properly frame the shot? I can't find it
Go to view - camera settings - resolution gate
Make sure your size is set to what you want in the render settings and you're good to go.
Thanks:)
Thank you!!!
thanku very much...:)
When I batch render I lose my physical sun and sky (the sky becomes white/alpha channel) - I'm rendering as .EXR.. could this be the issue??
Sam Carrick Solo debes descativar el alfa en Ps o Ae :)
For anyone that have this same question.... I render using JPEG and works fine!

You didn't start from the beginning!
@kudos1567 Sorry I'm not too familiar with SSS so I'll be no help to you on this one.
hahahaha
