As a silver coach I'd like to commend the maker of this video. You do not need to "force" the ball to hook. Proper release will allow you hook without having to snap your hand over / around the ball. A few points to add: 1) Point 4 in this video is very important; let the ball fall in your swing. Do not try to throw the ball; let your body and timing control the speed through a free swing. 2) Let your bowling shoulder drop as you start the approach to help your body at the end to be in position for release behind the ball. Notice the bowler's dropped shoulder on approach through release. This bowler has great body position to demonstrate it. 3) Rotate the bowling hand open on the back swing. If you were to pull the thumb out of your ball at the top of the swing it should point towards the sky (not necessarily straight up) This will help keep the arm straight and get the hand in the proper position behind the ball on release. This bowler is not doing that but is able to get a nice release without it. 4) Start the acceleration (add muscle) only towards the bottom of the swing and through the follow through. I tell my students to feel the "load" build on the thumb. When the hand is in the proper position, once the thumb is released the weight will quickly shift to the finger tips and cause a "snap" on the rotation. You need to be accelerating at this point and following through to get the maximum rotation on the ball. 5) As they say in the video... You need "time" and lots of practice. This is easy mechanics once you learn it, but it will feel funky as you learn. People have a tendency to think bowling is "easy" but it's a skill that needs to be built. Not only do you need to build skill, but you'll need to build muscle and muscle memory. (or unlearn bad habits) On a proper release you should see a low access rotation on the ball (not looking like a helicopter and it should "appear" to accelerate as it starts into the hook through into the roll. You do not need to force the ball to hook, normal mechanics will cause the most powerful hook you can create without "funky" hand / wrist mechanics. Very well done. Thanks.
I 100% agree I'm a bowler. Everyone thinks it's all about power, if you power it the pins explode and you don't get enough pin action. People don't understand that power is not the key
AntariMysteec sorry, but I strongly disagree with #3. That is not in bowling handbook, taught by coach, or coaches dad who was a pro in the 40-50's. In order to get to that crazy position you are teaching, one almost is forced to open and close their shoulder, risking huge injuries. Also, #3 cannot possibly assist with accuracy, so why teach that? Im a female posting on mans account. I could throw 15lbs at age 11 without opening shoulder. I could move ball 25 boards without any of that wrist play. The only wrist movement endorsed by coach was not outside in, but inside out😎. For a great example of inside out, check out Marcia Kloempken from Storm bowling. She was amazing when she was 10 and I was 7 bowling y.a.b.a. She has 3 regionals and was on team USA 2007. My coach endorsed this lady when she was a child.
This was fantastic! I've been bowling recreationally forever and nobody has ever explained this to me...can't wait to practice with the football & then try it out at the bowling alley!
This video rules. Helpful, informative, excellent. I am very happy that I watched it. I will take what I've learned here and go to the lanes and try it. Thanks
I gotta disagree. The only problem I see is that I'm not allowed to switch hands and bowl lefty for certain splits or pickups as needed that would make the game much easier for me. However, these guys are allowed to bowl using both hands at the same time. It doesn't seem right to me. Does that mean I should be able to bowl left handed as long as I keep my right hand on the ball? As for cheating, I don't see it as that at all and quite frankly if it seems so easy to you, I suggest you pick it up and improve your average. I have tried it and I can assure you it isn't an advantage, it's a skill set.
I'm going to have to give this a try when I go bowling tomorrow. I've never really honestly thought about releasing the ball with my hand faced forward opposed to pointed downwards.
What videos like this never point out is that most of the weight of the grip should be on the thumb not across the palm of the hand. That is why thumb hole size and angle very important in your custom drill.
+rex scates. I know. I was thinking the same. Not all of us are in the same tune with that type of music, or any music when all we want is to pay attention to the instructions.
everything is ok, except showing the release, which is a spinner release, with the fingers around the ball and very high axis tilt eq very low track- demonstration from 2;32 forward... the final shot is totally different, with the wrist on the exterior of the ball , going "through" the ball
I thought that was just me that saw that. I would like to see a hook shot with a release through the ball. I want to see how ir when to release the thumb
At 3:01 that is just not the proper way to get through the ball. Your fingers should be driving through the middle of the ball, not the right side. The release you show there is one way to reduce revs. Your follow through should also be much closer to your body with your hand tracking underneath your head. Spine is slightly tilted right so as to drop your right shoulder so that your arm may swing freely under the head.
One serious flaw to the instruction. The Grip, swing, release all combine in the video to create a very near impossible to control hook. Offering little or no chance of consistency. The Video directs to keep the hand directly behind the ball at all times (as if you planned to roll the ball straight) and only at the last second allow your hand to move out to the side. As shown in the video on one example swing, at one point he actually had his hand inside so that it was between his body and the ball. Had the ball slipped or he released too soon this would have resulted in sending the ball straight into the gutter or even put him at risk of breaking a finger or his thumb. Instead... When you first set up and position your hand in the ball. Hold the ball with your hand slightly outside at about a 45 degree angle relative to the lane. Much like you would hold the handle of a brief case so that the front of the case pointed out away from your intended path. You do need to keep your wrist straight. At all times keep your hand holding the ball at that same angle through your approach, back swing, and into your release. On Release simply allow the ball to roll off of your hand and follow through so that your index finger traces the intended path of your ball through your target and to your expected hook point. For the record, having your ball drilled for finger tip grips can make throwing a hook somewhat easier but it is not required.
Draconus Spiritus I do feel fingertip grip (with finger inserts) are the way to go if you are a serious sportsman. The ball is more stable during approach with most of your hand spanning it. Ball does not hang on your fingers at the line ever like conventional or semi fingertip grip might. I also have an easier time adjusting at the line if my timing was off because I am all the way behind the ball.
First of all, it's middle and ring finger and second, not all bowling balls hook. For example there's a trike ball with normally hooks and a spare ball which is for spares, spare balls generally don't hook! So basically what I'm saying is if your a twat and comments saying "my ball won't hook", well check what way it's drilled. And yes it is possible to hook a conventional ball (none finger tipped) just putting that out there
when you say put your index and middle in the first knuckle and in the video you out ur middle and ring finger in there... get your facts straight cmon now
+John Yost You, sir, genuinely made me laugh with your utmost stupidity. Although it might be possible that, on the planet Zog, the beings there only have two fingers and thus you might be correct there. This, however, is planet Earth.
Thanks for posting this! When I was young I had a natural hook from day one. At about age 13 I broke my right wrist and ever since my natural hook disappeared. Not knowing how to do it I've always assumed it was from breaking my wrist. Well now I can practice getting a hook on my ball again.
Wow, this completely illustrated what I was doing wrong which was blocking me from what I thought was a good swing. I have not been keeping my wrist behind the ball and have been letting the ball hang from my fingers. I had one randomly good swing today (before seeing this video) and I after seeing this video, it became clear what I did right; hand/wrist behind the ball. Can’t wait to start bowling better now. Thanks so much!
I can throw a hook, I prefer throw a straight ball aim for pocket, I've bowled as high 255,I usually bowl 160 or higher, bowling is most humblying sport,I ever played, the first time ,I was 25 and jacked 76,67,103, my first 3 games and a sore back lol😀
That's actually really well described to be honest. The foam football idea really brings it full circle to fully understand the movement. Really this is actually a great video
I picked this up almost instantly bowling without the thumb. Don't bowl with too heavy of a ball doing this because I used a 16lb ball for 2 straight hours of bowling and injured my wrist
That is al ot of bowling balls for a 12 year old. With those balls I think you can kick them and they will hook automatically. Due to the core lil buddy. Do not worry if you cant hook it like the big boys. If you have good fundamentals you will score well eventually.
I don't agree with the release. The bowler seems to force the turn of his hand. This is going to end up chicken winging it. Your hand will naturally turn and to about 11 to 5 o'clock. Your fingers lift up and your hand is basically almost facing you.
Anyone know if there is anything that can help with keeping my wrist behind the ball my bowling ball is like about 10 to 11lbs it's a DV8 Hell Raiser fantastic ball it is just a little bit on the heavy side?
In the first step you said put your index and middle finger in.... which of course it's wrong...but in the video you did put your middle and ring finger in...good job
But why do you have to turn your hand at 3:00? Is it essential? Nobody is explaining this Everybody says, just release the thumb first and then the fingers but nobody gives details on that hand turn
For me it's SOOO hard to have the ha d behind the ball. I think I have very weak wrists. so I have to work out or is there a teqnique to make it easier?
Oh oopies! 🙄I bowled for the first time today and I was hooking the ball totally wrong! I only know that bowling included a heavy ball and pin thingys (┳◇┳) so embarrassing... I was using my thumb, index, and ring finger to hook it(or whatever)>_< I only played 2 rounds with others and won the first one using my incorrect method of hooking and the second I had lost badly using the correct way 😋
I’m buying my first hook ball tomorrow. I hope this video was right. I’m just going to do what it said here but take my time, so I don’t humiliate myself. Did I mention that I’m kinda nervous that I’ll fuck up big time

My friend always recommended not to stick my thumb inside the hole. I have been doing that for so long; can you tell me if that is a proper way of holding the ball?
What I do when I bowl is I rotate my wrist horizontaly to the left then when I release I just pull so the ball is going directly to the left, I place to ball to the right so It dosent fall off on the left gutter lane. Am I doing it right? (I'm a right habd bowler)
Coderedpirate - It sounds like what you explained is a pretty common thing that people do when they think "hook." Usually makes your wrist come out and around the ball rather than from behind, which creates more topspin than it does roll. Although it can usually generate higher rev rates, it's less effective to the natural hook a ball has when it rolls down the lane. You can get a ball drilled properly for that track and get the same result as someone with a very good release as well. Speak with your local drill professional for more information about this!
All of this information is correct. There is one thing missing though. When you begin to rotate your hand/fingers, accelerate through with your thumb up.
Andrew Austin The idea is to keep wrist locked or cupped behind ball as long as you can. Your hand will naturally come out with thumb pointing at 2oclock for righty, 10 oclock for lefty.
Ok so I'm currently changing my bowling style from two finger to utilizing all 3 fingers. This makes alot more sense to me seeing it in slow motion. I have actually been doing it wrong wondering why I wasn't getting any rev rates. It seems I'm trying to hard to spin the ball myself rather than letting my fingers roll it off in the natural way this shows. Once I get my new hammer black widow I'm going to be doing this drill to help myself before league starts up. Thank you for this very informative video
I bowl with no thumb, but only because i can't keep my palm behind the ball. Does this mean the ball is too heavy because i can't cup it or is the balled not drilled right?
Great Bowling Tips - Thank You For This Valuable Information. We Have Tips Too. and Will Be Share and Posting Your Videos On Our Fanpage and Websites and Blogs!
Song It depends on many things. I would say the 2 main things are the lane conditions and your ball. When you throw the ball, first it will slide, then it rolls, finally it hooks. The further out on lane you throw it, the longer you delay the hook. You absolutely want ball to still be hooking when it hits pocket. Otherwise, your ball has "rolled out" and will likely hit like a ton of marshmallows.
How much do these balls weigh ? If i try to hold my 14lb bowling ball like this ( and relax , like your told to do ) gravity takes over and ball just drops to lowest level bending my wrist back. How do you relax your arm yet retain this cupped position ?
So you do have to twist your hand/arm a little like you're about to do a handshake then? A veteran bowler here told me and my dad that we are doing it wrong, that we had to hold our hand in the same way all the way through, not twisting the arm like you did, but then like uhm shove the ball with the index finger and ring finger to get it to spin, because that would make the ball grip more. The first time I tried it, it went pretty well. Was easier than the way shown in this video. I do get more grip on the ally I bowl at with the club I'm in. I like it more when the ball grips and screws towards the 1 pin. But often the ball doesn't grip and almost just goes straight, even though I manage to throw it on the mark I'm aiming for. Though the ball I have is a simi spare ball. So the guy in the club who's going for pro says. And I think he's correct, since the ball mostly goes straight. The ball I'm using is the Slingshot one. Got it from a woman in the club who had it just laying around :P Gonna buy a new ball this summer. It'll be one of those "heavy oil" as my dad calls it. Says it'll grip more. So looking forward to this summer. My dad says it's more natural to twist your arm like that when throwing (the way you do in the video), because it's natural for the arm to twist like that when you move it back and forth right.
I cant seem to keep my hand behind the ball, I end up with a broken wrist and my hand carrying the ball like you would carry a 6 pack of soda. Any tips on how to keep your hand in the correct position?
When you bowl don't force your wrist. Let it develop and fet used to the bowling ball so just keep it mid way at least and gradually getfurther up with your wrist
Thank you for this video! I am 46 and began bowling in 4th grade. I have been away from it for many years now because I just started getting bad. I've strung together 9 in a row (honestly stuck at the foul line on the first 10th frame ball...PIIIIIISSED! LOL) Anyhoo, I began overpowering the ball which resulting in poor control and less hook...I now think you have solved my other problem. I never realized (and nobody told me) I am breaking my wrist at the bottom of the swing, and it was probably gradual (which is odd). I am ready to try my hand again and will let you know the results. Sadly enough, the bowling alley in our town is up for auction, I believe, tomorrow! *sigh*
Very informative! With all the talk of pins, motors (weights or cores) urethane vs. resin, oil patterns, the actual skill of bowling is getting lost. Technology can help, but your own innate or learned (practiced) skills will make or break you as a bowler!
When I do this I don’t even put my thumb in the ball... I put my fingers in to the first knuckle... and don’t swing all the way back... about halfway and when I release I twist my wrist.. perfect spin everytime! Once you have your spin down and how hard your gonna spin it. Now you can adjust where your going to stand. I usually stand as far left as possible as I throw with my right. I’m no pro but I get a fair share of strikes... put it this way... my best game was like 200. So far from perfect. But if I had to put my thumb inside I doubt I would be able to hook it without breaking some fingers.
Hi I am a duckpin bowler and at the same time a ten pin bowler. I find duckpin to be more challenging when it comes to accuracy. The level of concentration is higher.
mikeandike1966 truth be told the hook just looks cool. Without proper release of the ball you are not generating forward roll, which is what causes a lot of pin action. It does this because when ball hits pins using forward roll the pins bounce horizontally, taking out more pins. Forward roll also gives you extra driving power and plows through pins as opposed to being deflected. The heavier your ball is, the more pins you knock down with ball itself.
Thank you: To the only video that explains anything.
yeah, it's not 100% accurate but it helps to get started

As a silver coach I'd like to commend the maker of this video. You do not need to "force" the ball to hook. Proper release will allow you hook without having to snap your hand over / around the ball.
A few points to add:
1) Point 4 in this video is very important; let the ball fall in your swing.
(or unlearn bad habits)
On a proper release you should see a low access rotation on the ball (not looking like a helicopter and it should "appear" to accelerate as it starts into the hook through into the roll.
You do not need to force the ball to hook, normal mechanics will cause the most powerful hook you can create without "funky" hand / wrist mechanics.
Very well done. Thanks.
AntariMysteec i just throw the ball any way
you have way too much time to write a comment this long. Go on a date!
I 100% agree I'm a bowler. Everyone thinks it's all about power, if you power it the pins explode and you don't get enough pin action. People don't understand that power is not the key

This is youtube at its finest
One of the best tutorials I've seen on this subject, on you tube.
I'm studying the subject and discovered a great website at Berts Bowls Guide (check it out on google)
Thats not index finger!
Manuel F lol
If you want to learn how to bowl like a pro then go here now: HootBowl.xyz
He meant middle and ring finger.
0:48 "Index and middle finger" should be "middle and ring finger"
This was fantastic! I've been bowling recreationally forever and nobody has ever explained this to me...can't wait to practice with the football & then try it out at the bowling alley!
I've taken to having a friend hidden with an air rifle incase there's a pesky pin that doesn't want to fall 😉
The lane assistant hidden out back...?😜
I'm watching this currently in a bowling center lolol.
Now I'm gonna beat my fiends ass!
Love this turtorial, helped me get a 240 game, thanks and keep up the good work.
This video rules. Helpful, informative, excellent. I am very happy that I watched it. I will take what I've learned here and go to the lanes and try it. Thanks
So far this is the best tutorial I've seen by far. Most of the pros don't know how to teach it in a video.
+SYN30STM he's a pro?
+SYN30STM one more thing. Just because someone is good at something doesnt make them a good teacher and even sometimes vice versa

What videos like this never point out is that most of the weight of the grip should be on the thumb not across the palm of the hand. That is why thumb hole size and angle very important in your custom drill.
Thanks for the video, really helped me release the ball properly! This is one of the best videos on how to hook the ball for beginners!
At 0:46 seconds it says enter your "INDEX and MIDDLE FINGER to the first knuckle" but you put your Middle Finger and Ring Finger in the holes
thats what u do to get the ball out easier to rotate the ball
The correct way to hold the bowling ball is to put your middle finger and ring finger inside the holes.
That is true lol
Forced to go bowling tomorrow. Hope this helps :D
the music makes it distracting
+rex scates. I know. I was thinking the same. Not all of us are in the same tune with that type of music, or any music when all we want is to pay attention to the instructions.

i am left handed, need more left handed tutorials, but thanks bud
Download the video and flip it horizontally.
Left handed and right handed bowlers use the same theory to hook the ball

He should push the ball straight forward as he starts to move forward so gravity will pull the ball down creating a pendulum effect without effort.
Skip the music and replace it with commentary to explain your points verbally. Annoying.
You say to stick index and middle finger in the ball up to the first knuckle, but then the video shows him putting in middle and ring fingers.
a football hu? hmmm not a bad idea, can imagine if the football does a perfect spiral from the under hand throw then youv'e done the release correct
I have spent months studying bowls and found a great resource at Berts bowls guide (look it up on google)
What the fuck is "basic knowledge" of bowling ??? It's bowling.
For me it's SOOO hard to have the ha d behind the ball. I think I have very weak wrists. so I have to work out or is there a teqnique to make it easier?
Ffs i skipped the note in the begining, now my wrist is broken (i don't have knowledge about this sport)
Oh oopies! 🙄I bowled for the first time today and I was hooking the ball totally wrong! I only know that bowling included a heavy ball and pin thingys (┳◇┳) so embarrassing... I was using my thumb, index, and ring finger to hook it(or whatever)>_< I only played 2 rounds with others and won the first one using my incorrect method of hooking and the second I had lost badly using the correct way 😋
Kari :3 Try to hook with lighter balls
ŞARKI ÇOK GÜZEL ATIŞ TA ÇOK GÜZEL.
best video iv seen after 2 hrs searching,,thx!!!
This video is so bad on so many levels. You should remove it ASAP before your hurt or confuse someone.
I’m buying my first hook ball tomorrow. I hope this video was right. I’m just going to do what it said here but take my time, so I don’t humiliate myself. Did I mention that I’m kinda nervous that I’ll fuck up big time

How could anyone take this seriously with the crap distracting music?
Where was this recorded if I may ask? what bowling alley and where? it looks like the one in my town
Lol I'm bowling right now and watched this video. Got a strike first time trying it lmao!!! Thanks!!
My friend always recommended not to stick my thumb inside the hole. I have been doing that for so long; can you tell me if that is a proper way of holding the ball?
Your posture is wrong you are suppose to keep your foot down on the ground after releasing your follow through not parrarell to the floor
So we didn't even see the ball actually hook? Hmmm. May want to re make vid
Да! Рекомендую поучиться, есть ряд грубых ошибок! Удачи!
This was very helpful. Thank you :)
That's not a house ball, it's a custom finger tip bowling ball.
It's kinda rude to not give credit for the song tho
All of this information is correct. There is one thing missing though. When you begin to rotate your hand/fingers, accelerate through with your thumb up.
Andrew Austin The idea is to keep wrist locked or cupped behind ball as long as you can. Your hand will naturally come out with thumb pointing at 2oclock for righty, 10 oclock for lefty.
So my trainer/coach told me I was over rotating my wrist and coming up the side of the ball, do you know how I could fix this?
MALTBYMAN 13 Lock or cup your wrist and come straight through ball. The hand has no choice but to turn when you release. No need to overthink it.
Pretty much every advice from anyone who hooks the ball is in this video. Its so simple, just gotta work on it.
Thank you for this very informative video
good video , so whats ur bowling averagE?
I bowl with no thumb, but only because i can't keep my palm behind the ball. Does this mean the ball is too heavy because i can't cup it or is the balled not drilled right?
Parick It sounds like you have a conventional grip which is harder to stay behind. The span is shorter giving you less control of hand position.
It's ring finger not an index that goes in
Cant you just use two fingers? The thumb is not necessary right?
Just wondering how heavy your ball Is and what kind?

im 8 and can hook i didnt evejn need to look at this video
Where should the ball land on the lance when releasing the ball (e.g. 6 inches from the foud line, or a range)?
How do you relax your arm yet retain this cupped position ?
when you were rolling the ball your hand wasn't behind the ball
Got it from a woman in the club who had it just laying around :P
Gonna buy a new ball this summer. It'll be one of those "heavy oil" as my dad calls it. Says it'll grip more. So looking forward to this summer.
My dad says it's more natural to twist your arm like that when throwing (the way you do in the video), because it's natural for the arm to twist like that when you move it back and forth right.
GUYS , HIS LAST VIDEO (on his site) WAS 4 YEARS AGO. DON'T THINK YOU ARE GOING
TO GET ANY ANSWERS. Helpful video just the same.
I cant seem to keep my hand behind the ball, I end up with a broken wrist and my hand carrying the ball like you would carry a 6 pack of soda. Any tips on how to keep your hand in the correct position?
When you bowl don't force your wrist. Let it develop and fet used to the bowling ball so just keep it mid way at least and gradually getfurther up with your wrist
you probably need a lighter ball.
Check out SKYtomo. Completely changed my game. The hook on the backend is viciously aggressive now. Took me three weeks to get the hang of his style.
or you could just not use the thumb hole. then it curves by itself lol
I never thought to put my hand behind the ball instead of on top/ sideways. Thanks!!
Thanks bro. Todays my daughters class feild trip gonna hace a way better time now knowing this tip
Hi guys. I would like to ask hook how many lbs u all using?
*sigh*
Nice tutorial, and I like the football practice technique. I'll be trying this out!
Very informative! With all the talk of pins, motors (weights or cores) urethane vs. resin,
oil patterns, the actual skill of bowling is getting lost. Technology can help, but your own innate or learned (practiced) skills will make or break you as a bowler!
Hi,
Not allowed to use my left hand not right one?
Couldn't get past the horrific music.
Middle finger and ring finger you mean??
Hi I am a duckpin bowler and at the same time a ten pin bowler. I find duckpin to be more challenging when it comes to accuracy. The level of concentration is higher.
helps a lot trying to start curving but im still going to bowl strait for a while longer
mikeandike1966 truth be told the hook just looks cool.
