Good stuff...I saw the mention of the elbow being bent slightly to get more under the ball, but at 1:28 you have a split screen of J’s release and clearly his wrist is bent in the side view but is hard to detect from behind. I would like to see a part 2 on this drill talking more about the wrist and elbow positions to help achieve a larger portion of what Jungo demonstrated to us. It’s just not that easy to do or understand without more details. What comes natural to Jungo is very foreign to many of us. Thanks
I definitely appreciate this video because I have a problem every now and then chicken winging the ball which also includes me accidentally coming on top of the ball by turning by wrist/hand on top once I release the ball
I'm both 1 handed and 2 handed. 1 handed: Release your thumb except for the index and middle fingers. Double handed: Take out the left hand before the ball gets launched/thrown.
Might have missed it, but I think a big tip with house balls is if you have a lot of revs and are still trying to throw it 25 MPH (40 KPH), then it probably won't hook like you expect it too. I've seen that a lot with the no thumb bowlers.
I'm glad that he gave 2 ways to do this my problem has always been finding a house ball big enough for my thumb therefore it tends to get stuck so finding a way to hook without using the thumb hole is amazing
oh I'll remember this video. I'm still learning on how to hook a ball, I had a slightly good idea on how to do it after watching so many people while working. ❤👍
Get under ball and come around the ball. Do those two things and its easy. The whole thumb out first and the faster you get thumb out really slowed my progress by months. If you lock the wrist and get under the ball, the thumb comes out first naturally. @JRProShop
It dont require a super strong wrist either. Balance the ball properly in the beginning and stiffen index finger and lock the wrist and don't let it break until release. The further you are under the ball and the faster you unload wrist and follow through the more revs you'll get. The reason Two handed bowlers create so many revs is because of how far under the ball you are. Only reason it's usable is the power and ball speed it produces. I can put more revs on the ball than my ball speed can handle by simply locking the wrist and unloading at release. At that point I don't come around the ball as much and come over more of the back side of the ball. Ball drives at pins on house pattern. It literally will not hook without the proper wrist position no matter how far you come around the ball. It spins like a top or fish flops down the lane. Yes both thumb exit speed and hand position affect hook but until you get under the ball it does 0 good to work on them much. Get under ball and don't let wrist break until point of release. Start there and then come back to this if you are just learning. I started this years season with a 79 average. Today I bowl around 177. Mid season I bowled around 110. Christmas break I was showed how to get under the ball. 50 point increase in less than week. The other 27 came from learning more hand positions and working on release. As I'm new to the sport I wonder if the lifers and pros have forgotten how they learned it or if they was taught how they are teaching. Either way i have since worked with other newbs on this who wonders the same after I show them how to get under. Am I wrong her or is there a reason nobody is teaching this from RUclips. I'm not trolling I'm just wondering aloud and hoping I can help others learn faster by providing my experience and hearing from the pros making the vid. After reading my comment I noticed how it sounds. I am not the a**hole I sound. Haha
@@kevinquick4844 this is a great point. Many bowlers who use one hand STRUGGLE to keep their hand under the ball during the swing especially if you have very weak wrists. For those looking to do more bowling it definitely helps to have a couple of dumb bells at home and curl your wrists while watching tv, etc. to develop more strength. The other common mistake is most people don't lean forward enough when they are going through the approach and ultimately release the ball. The tendency for inexperienced bowlers is to throw the ball almost standing up straight. Doing so will prevent you from throwing a hook and will compromise your back swing and speed.
There's a much easier way to produce those results that everyone ignores. Only use two fingers Simply rotate the ball in your hand while your fingers are in the holes to essentially turn the holes so that your fingers are in front of each other not side to side This provides a very moderate grip on the ball Release as shown. This has been my secret to drunkenly teaching everyone around me at the local shop how to hook the ball hard and fast.
People don’t ignore it-it’s just harder to control and it hurts your wrist. That’s why they showed the two hand method instead of one hand + two fingers
I use the no-thumb method mainly to practice controlling revolutions. I want to get good at using my thumb (more power) but I always end up getting it stuck or leaving it in too long😂
When I was the beginner, my biggest mistake was trying to rotate the ball horizontally rather than vertically. (rotating with wrist, rather than doing it with stiff wrist and lifting it up with my 2 fingers)
I was so frustrated using these type instructions. Could get revs up. The ball hooked but just bairly. It wasnt until i learned to load my wrist and stay below the equator that i got good ball motion
i’ve been taught the 2 finger method and hooking isn’t a problem but i feel like i’m sacrificing a lot of speed and control. need to get my own ball and practice with 3 fingers.
I tried to do 2 hands but I always ended messing something up too much to keep track of started using 1 hand no thumb and getting strikes but idk if this will limit my skill ceiling
I am super confused. Looking at videos on RUclips, some people say to rotate your hand around the ball for more hook, others say its reliant on your rpm and keeping your hand behind the ball for the whole swing. I cant seem to rotate the ball with just my fingertips efficiently. I have a Brunswick Rhino Solid and barely get any hook out of it

Not all balls are $300--my first weighted pro shop ball was well under $100 (over 20 years ago, though). You can also buy used balls or use a hand-me-down--they can fill and drill. I've done this two times myself. Unless you find a house ball with a perfect fit (I've never found one), you will fight against the ball the entire time. Many house balls in the bowling centers near me are plastic and not very dense--you can see them "skip" sideways once they start contacting the pins.

It depends how much you’re trying to hook the ball. The more you hook it, the more angle you need through the front part of the lane. If you hook it a bit less, then straighter will be more ideal
If you release the thumb from the ball and it drops to the lane, this means that you do not have your hand under the ball. The weight of the ball needs to be on your fingers and palm. I teach my beginner buddies that if they are using a 15lbs ball, then at least 14lbs should be supported by their fingertips/palm and only 1lb on their thumb.
