Me: Listen to this song and guess the drummer Friend: The songs jazzy so it must be a jazz drummer (Gavin Harrison Hits 5 bells and china cymbal) Friend: Gavin Harrison
Gavin Harrison is a jazz trained drummer 'at heart', to quote him, but he takes his philosophy and finesse of his drumming to more of a progressive-metal genre, and it works really well!
Just wow....Gavin Harrison is just sssssooooo slick and he makes it look effortless.....there is lots of drummers out there who technically gifted but no groove....But Gavin Harrison is the master of both and that is THE GIFT.....i could listen to this guy own this jazz all day
Gavin Harrison never ceases to surprise me. Sure, this is not supposed to be "legit" (or whatever you might want to call it) jazz drumming - it's Gavin doing his magic - as always with fantastic creativity, taste and surgical precision. It's pointless to ask who''s the "best" drummer. Gavin is my favorite, with Vinnie coming dangerously close ;-)
Gavin is amazing, incredible, and all the superlatives that everyone has described in the comments, and I also have to say, that piano solo. Holy shit!
As much as I love Gavin it's a little hard to listen to this piece because Weckl is my favorite drummer and he eats music like this with both hands tied behind his back. I prefer Gavin playing rock. Not that I don't like his jazz interpretations, but they seem almost, I said almost, fundamental after listening to Weckl for 20+ years. In any regard the dude is top 5 for my taste. Awesome stuff.
SmackDownBrown49 I agree with you for the most part. Weckl is a phenomenal jazz player and over all, probably a more proficient drummer. However, I love this video because it shows how incredibly creative Gavin is. He has such a cool style and brings many different rhythmic concepts to the table that are innovative. His playing is lush, mind boggling, and just badass. I also agree that he does really well in the rock genre. He adds so much to porcupine tree.
Maybe not the best, but he's got the feel and sound of Peter Erskine while being way more inventive. Still blows my mind how good he is at genres outside of what he's known for
First of all, his flams are so fat and sassy. Love it. Also, during the drum solo, there is no possible way that he keeps time with the loop silence- Does he like have a metronome going during that part that we don't hear, or is he just good enough to keep time while he solos?
Your fat and sassy description pre-dates the famous fat and sassy viral video by some 7 years or so. Were you aware of this? +10 Internet Points to you.
I saw him play in San Francisco with some band. I reckon the audience was 90% drummers all there to see Gavin. Talk about Gavin fever! I don’t even remember the name of the band.
if you like this you need to listen to Chaka Khans version with JR Robinson or is it Steve Ferrone (im not actually sure who played on it) anyway its an amazing version as is Gavins
Interesting how they look so much alike and have similar specs! The protean of course has it's cool smaller configurations which he chose. Maybe this used to be his favorite snare? He's always been a huge fan of Gadd, who plays recording custom.
Kinda know what you mean but not convinced. Gavin is really now new age, has a different mental approach to drumming compared to the great old school drummers, but class is class & they both have it.
what about colaiuta? he can play everything. can be sting, can be megadeth, can be herbie hancock stuff... okay, i guess you're gonna say that he is notknown for being a rock drummer but then again he wouldn't fit any classification like that. and gavin therefore shouldn't be considered a rock drummer either. especially because prog rock is closer to jazz than most other subgenres of rock music
This version of that great jazz standard is horribile. Gavin Harrison always make a fantastic performance, but in my opinion he could avoid mixing with this crap.
Oh yeas, Gavin is one of the greatest. He and Keith Carlock are special guys that combine outstanding groove and technicality. I love them so much.
Definitely one of the greatest drummers alive today.
Gavin = immaculate time and feel.
Wow I’ve never heard him play jazz and it’s fantastic..
He grew up on jazz.

The bells give him away every time

His personality and blueprint gives him away everytime.
There. Fixed it 😇

I love his sound, how the set is tuned and his gestures
And yet another surprising drum feel of Mr Harrison. Simply awesome!! I hope young drummers take notice....Peace
In this video, besides Gavin which is one of my all time favourite drummers,
I love the sound of his cymbals..!
He is using some K constantinople cymbals, which are perfect for jazz, such as this.
you can tell he feels jazz much stronger than any other music he plays...the dude is like...in the zone times ten right now!
This guy is working his way up my favourite all time drummer list! quality!
Nn ho parole per definirlo, bravi tt però che batterista

That neat two cymbal hit at 1:30 sounds so sweet, great touch.
I was so confused how he did that for a minute
No getting away from it - the man's a monster.
Didn't notice the upper cymbal at first. Made me smile a lot
NICE...and I like that track too
He endosed every brands that on the top .
what a fat sound! gotta love that first crash stroke...
I love watching Gavin play the drums but I could hardly hear him because of the sax. 🎷
amazing MUSIC!!! crazy and tasty..
uno acostumbrado a este tema swingueado pero el tipo lo interpreta excelente de esa forma, una bestia el guachin
Drumporn music...oh my GODGAVIN!
Amazing snare *O*
And his drums sound amazing. How does he get that perfect bass sound?
@amusingisthedawn The man is always in the zone like that...incredible
I Loves tha JAZZ!!

Geez,if Gavin keeps it up,he might go places ! Lol
Woo, weather channel music. :D
Tell Chaka Khan

ah, alright, thanks a lot! :D
I thought at first it would be some kind of 'push-pull-method' (jojo mayer talks about it)...
Hi what's size off these tom from left to right, and How many cymbals are they?
amen my friend! :)

he usually has ear mon1tors so there could be a metronome
also he probab
ly counts alot

What hi hat is he using here? :) Sounds amazing! :)
anyone notice the metric modulation at 2:42??
4:45 try and play that bitch! face
I'll take a double stack and a small fry please... oh wait, im on youtube, not at wendys..
@imdarrellkthx do you order from your cellphone?
The only problem with Gavin Harrison is that regardless of the band and the type of music, he will always overshadow the rest of the musicians.
The Vinyl Broadcaster overshadow steven wilson or king crimson? I mean, he's one of my favourite drummers ever but i don't think so
I saw him play in San Francisco with some band. I reckon the audience was 90% drummers all there to see Gavin. Talk about Gavin fever! I don’t even remember the name of the band.
Yes He has a beautiful sound and play jazz way better than most of prog drummer but..Erskine? Well, just another story...
Mike Mangini was my fav drummer until I found Gavin :\
Somebody knows If this tune have a drumless?
3:37
if you like this you need to listen to Chaka Khans version with JR Robinson or is it Steve Ferrone (im not actually sure who played on it) anyway its an amazing version as is Gavins
I think it was Steve Ferrone, they also recruited the great Abe lobriel to play bass although AJ toured when the album came out.
@ctdrums1 Really nice commet
i'd watch the weather channel a whole lot more if they played this kinda stuff, but... they don't
might be an older zildjian constantinople ride
What's his cymbal rig??
does anyone know what kind of technique he uses at 1:29 (right hand, ride cymbal)?
He's just hitting 2 cymbals at the same time. Hitting between them up and down.
At 3.00 he hit the rim second tom
@amaupin4111 I'm sure he's recording to a click, but he probably has good enough time to pull it off anyways :D
@NerfLad I'm sure you're right. But I don't speak for the many, or for votes, I speak for myself.
snare yamaha RA 955 =New protean
Interesting how they look so much alike and have similar specs! The protean of course has it's cool smaller configurations which he chose. Maybe this used to be his favorite snare? He's always been a huge fan of Gadd, who plays recording custom.
2nd vid i watched of this dude his jazz playing is alright ...its got a smooth jazz type of feel too it ...not like the boppers !!!!
This is from an instruction video, it isn't his "real" playing. Check out his Cheating the Polygraph stuff for a fairer representation.
Really nice hands! Effort less. Ease.
Gavin is great, but no one is like Vinnie Colaiuta ;)
Kinda know what you mean but not convinced. Gavin is really now new age, has a different mental approach to drumming compared to the great old school drummers, but class is class & they both have it.
I prefer Gavin.
I prefer Vinnie, or at least prime Vinnie.
Well not the best, but he can still play it. Just listen to the piano solo.
What?
El swing no es el fuerte de Gavin Harrison, eh.
what about colaiuta? he can play everything. can be sting, can be megadeth, can be herbie hancock stuff... okay, i guess you're gonna say that he is notknown for being a rock drummer but then again he wouldn't fit any classification like that. and gavin therefore shouldn't be considered a rock drummer either. especially because prog rock is closer to jazz than most other subgenres of rock music
To show how good he is, he took up one of the shittiest songs ever, and still made it rock by virtue of his drumming alone.
menos onda ue pelo de ponja
A box of tricks. Now play some music.
well....not the best jazz drummer...although maximum respect
This version of that great jazz standard is horribile. Gavin Harrison always make a fantastic performance, but in my opinion he could avoid mixing with this crap.
