    Good safety tip. Back in 1978 I had just got swapped over to inactive reserves and my second job out of high school, I choose to apprentice with a shoe cobbler in East Texas. On my 3rd day we we're busy and cobbler was showing me something and he had a lot of work to do. It was just the 2 of us in the shop.
    He went over to the 29k to repair some stitching on a pair of cowboy boots and customers seem to flood in.
    Making long story short he was bouncing off the walls. He only had one leg and was hurrying every chance he got. I needed help and customers needed it to.
    He pulled out a half hide of calf skin or pig skin and was cutting a belt strip when the phone rang and customers flooded in again. He looked up and I looked at him. He lost his concentration and the knife slipped and his thumb was cut slap off in one stroke. I was in 🇺🇸 Navy nurse corp in the military and he didn't have a med kit in the shop.
    Lucky for me or him I had a web belt to use as a tourniquet. Customers started screaming because blood was spurting. I always wore 2 T-shirts. I RIP off my outer shirt and pulled off one of my T shirts. The blood slowed and his hand was compressed with the cotton T shirt in the tourniquet.
    I told everyone out! I locked up the shop and drove him a mile to the emergency room. I found the thumb and doctor was able to reattach it. He actually was able to use it in time.
    I stayed his apprentice for 2.5 yrs.
    I hate to think what would have happened if Andy had not agreed to take on an apprentice.
    Never never get in a hurry when you have anything sharp or pointed in your hand. Lay it down then take your eyes off.

    I truly enjoy these videos!!! I thought I was decent at sharpening a knife until I watched these got a round knife and tried and it takes practice!!! I will say I finally have gotten my knife sharp!!! Sharp enough my husband wont be in the same room with it when I'm using it!!! I have found I make less mistakes now with using the osbourne round knife than using any other tools especially cutting out designs. I got some leather to make my own horse tack and gifts!!! Anyway it was yall's videos that finally convinced me to get one a few months back and for that I thank you!!!

    Back in the days of reusable solid stainless scalpels, it was essential to have surgical techs that could hone and strop scalpels. Then they have to clean up every last bit of oil before sterilization.

    hi and greetings,
    not all surgical blades have a wire edge.
    you can use a No 23, BP( BARD-PARKER) BLADE, one can skive, but rewuires some practice.
    other BP blades,. No.11,. and 10 are also useful.

    Is that how you make a feather-edge belt?

    I had a quick question.
    First, thx for the video!
    I'm starting to skive now and was curious about the surface you skive on. You mentioned it needs to be slick and I've seen glass, marble and I think granite. Are these hard on the blades? Are there any hints/secrets to spare the blades if so?
    Thanks again!

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  5 лет назад

      As with any surface it is going to dull the edge. Even just going through the leather will dull it. The smooth surface of the granite will help it glide across and we think it minimizes the damage the blade might take.
      Round knives or Head knives blades will last for a long time if you take proper care of them. If you strop it before use, then you will be set.

    Would you guys consider shipping Hermann Oak belly pieces to Singapore? So far it's only available to ship within the US?:)

  • @laurie1888

    Does going directly onto the granite not blunt your knife? Awesome video!

    • @joejoelesh1197
      @joejoelesh1197 6 лет назад

      They are matching the angle they hold the knife on the slab and the angle of the bevel of the blade..... if that makes sense. So no, it does not dull the knife as much as you may think

    Thank you for making this video!
    I have a question about which tool(s) to use for skiving THIN leather. I have some leather that is pretty thin already, but I need to thin out the edges some more. The leather used in the video looked thicker than the one I'm working with, so I'm wondering if the tools used would work the same for me? Or are certain tools better for thin leathers? Also, do you have any tips/experience with skiving suede? Thanks a ton!

    • @SpringfieldLeather
      @SpringfieldLeather  4 года назад

      Hello Ashley,
      the same tools should work, but it's going to be all about "sharp"...... especially with suede. again, it's all about sharp. Actually some have success with scalpels....

    I should have watched this earlier...I safety beveled my thumb! It still wants to bleed a bit after 8 hours. I am thinking about using some Barge cement if it keeps leaking.
