    Terrific Video.....I learned a lot, gonna get me one. Here in Canada we call those a "Head Knife". I was a little dubious about getting one (They are expensive) but your tutorial has convinced me to bite the bullet, when the pension check comes in, I'm off to the Leather store.

    The skill is amazing, I hope one day to use a round knife with such proficiency. Not specializing in saddlery myself, the need for mastering the round knife is not as high, but I can see it being absolutely required after 10 oz for the large thick cuts of saddlery, not to mention working all day with leather, the multitude of uses in one tool being of such importance in the trade of saddlery.
    Personally with my own specialty in leather work being small items of 7-8 oz veg, but more specifically tooling, at my lack of skill with a round knife, it's much faster and safer for straps and belts that I simply start with a straight edge on a full side with a large drafting ruler, xacto or clicker knife the beginning edge, then simply use a strap cutter. I mean a person can cut a full side into straps in 10 minutes or less.
    I have no doubt someone with skill with a round knife like this video can cut straps in less time with ease and safety, but for people who lack and aren't cutting saddle skirting weights all day, i do love my xacto knife despite it's lacking in uses, one can use it quite proficiently for small intricate cuts.
    Thank you for your very informative videos! I look forward to learning how to use a round knife

    I dont do anything like this, leather working or what have you... However I do like how you explain Slicing rather then, What I call, Chiseling. To slice though something is much easer then pushing it straight into something.

    Do you have any brand recommendations for a good quality round/head knife; Or even brands I should steer clear of?

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  7 лет назад

      TheHelleri I don't know any makes other than DIxons They have gone bust so you can't buy them now. If you look on eBay you sometimes see old ones for sale. Whatever knife you buy spend a lot of time getting the edge honed makers just do a quick sharpen of the edges. I believe you have to hone the knife from the back and get rid of any bumps. I think I compare my knife to my wife's knife in one of my videos

      Thanks, I'll keep an eye out. Sharpening won't be an issue if I can get my hands on one. There isn't a blade I own that can't split a hair length wise.

    Hiya,
    Have you ever used a hawkbill knife? I'm a proud owner of one, it's a beautiful piece but not sure about the best techniques when it comes to cut with it.
    Keep up with the good videos, cheers!

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk

      Hawkbill is a defence knife. I have never used one. My everyday knifes are my round knife my clicker knife.

    • @Mzmasta
      @Mzmasta 7 лет назад

      Now googling for it I see it doesn't primarily stand for what I meant :)
      I saw this called hawkbill, my question would be related to this: img0.etsystatic.com/058/0/9637034/il_570xN.750992138_ognb.jpg

      That looks almost like a bridle cutters knife or a French knife. Both are used when making bridles. On saying that I have only ever seen bridle makers use round knifes

    Awesome stuff I've just started leather sheath making this has helped me out loads. If you get a chance it would be great if you could check out my sheath video and let me know if you see any mistakes (probably a lot) 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  7 лет назад +2

      I looked at it. Your big mistake was you wasted leather. You should have done a paper pattern, Then cut round the shape. Other than that you managed to make an item that made you happy. That is why we all do leatherwork. You could prob do somethings a bit different that would save you time. You used something on the edges. Glue water would do the same job and save you money. If you want a day or 2 free help, Drive to sunny Scotland and I would be happy to show you some different methods

      Yeh I did waste a lot this is only my second sheath thanks so much for the help I've watched a few of your videos now and gunna try the edge sealer you use for my next sheath. If I do get any free time I will pop up that would make an awesome video for both our channels I think thanks. Keep them videos coming 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    I'm sorry guys but my Narex chisel 50 mm it is great for leather, and it is doing pretty mush the same, to much cutting unused edge in my opinnion and i know how it's works. But for some this tools it is good because they started with it. A lot of presure, if you are not used to it it would slide left or right, quite dangerous, and it is a big tool... I like to have in my kit just small. and effective tools.

    • @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk
      @UKSaddlerytrainingcoursesuk  4 года назад

      eye July you have to use what is best for you. The round knife is a great tool when you understand it’s use. This is why professional saddle and bridle makers use it
