The problem is, with Page saying that “his” DIGITAL remastered effort is the BEST these albums have ever sounded, why would he sign-off on another remastering effort. It won’t happen until Page meets the other “rock gods in the sky”….even then, “don’t hold your breath”!

Thanks for the video Michael. Like many, I would love see audiophile reissues of the Led Zep catalog. However, the likelihood of that happening may depend on who owns the publishing and recording rights to the music and masters. Classic likely negotiated a one time license to make those reissues with the record label. While Chad may own the plates to make the records, he may or may not have a license to do so. It depends on whether the original Classic license allowed subsequent reissues and perhaps whether it could be assigned to a successor of Classic. It would be interesting to know whether the rights are owned by the label or whether they have reverted back to the band members. If the latter, it may be difficult to negotiate a license that would make financial sense for both sides. By contrast, the Hendrix estate is probably looking to maximize licensing opportunities to generate revenue.

I'm sure you're right, Michael. As you said, Led Zeppelin is arguably one of the very best rock bands of all time. Given their popularity and long-term significance, you'd think it inconceivable that there wouldn't be proper, all-analogue reissues at some point in time. But if Analogue Productions releases them all individually as UHQR releases, I'm afraid that's just not feasible for lots of people. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones etc were bands whose albums sold in the tens of millions and they were priced the same as everything else at the time.
Rock music is (was?) meant to be music for the masses not for an elite of people that can afford to spend $125+ per record (way more if you're outside USA). Buying Led Zeppelin's entire 9 album catalogue shouldn't be the preserve of those people able to shell out $1125+ for Christ's sake. I appreciate you (and many like you) will buy them regardless, but come on man, this is getting really silly now. We've had the excellent all-analogue Marino cut Sony Jimi Hendrix Experience records, we're having the same with Blue Note jazz albums, why can't we have the same with Led Zeppelin?

I hope you are right. I just got back into collecting and I missed out on those great audiophile records. I am always looking for the best sounding album of a particular person or group. Why because it’s the music and on these audiophile records, they draw one closer to the music. Yes the music. Chad has been doing a great job especially with the Door reissues and other titles. Releasing the Zeppelin catalogue again May effect the value of those Classic recordings or it may not. I just want the music to ring throughout my house. I hope Chad and others are out there listening to you and others alike.

THAT is a nice bit of reasoning.
To recap, Classic Records made a very excellent release of Led Zep 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Chad Kassam now owns the metal parts of those releases, since he purchased the assets of Classic Records.
Add what one hears from the mouth of Chad himself about upcoming releases from his Accoustic Sounds / Analogue Productions companie,s like , and I am paraphrasing here,
,,,,,,classsic rock releases coming soon that will blow you away.....
and it is easy to agree that you, Michael, have hit the proverbial nail on the head.
Very insightful. Excellent. Two thumbs up.
I am taking it as a given. The only thing stopping it is the music owners.

Michael I agree...it is the right time now. Given his track record in ensuring only the highest levels of quality I also hope it's Chad Kassem that does this long anticipated release. Given a few recent interviews and seeing a Led Zeppelin album behind him...I have a feeling it will be him and that it will be next year. I also hope it isn't done as a box set as it would be waaaaaay to expensive for someone with a regular wage to purchase. Ideally they would be separate releases, done months apart from one another in a chronological order. Great video as always. Cheers to you from sunny Australia 🌞

Tell me,what would you expect a LZ audiophile recording to sound like? What major differences would you hear?Well i do not think it will ever happen because what we have will be the very best you could expect LZ to sound like. The last remasters were the pinnacle of their catalogue. My reasoning is this.As we are aware Jimmy Page is a perfection specialist. He is extremely fussy and takes great pride in presenting their sound.I would say that Jimmy squeezed every last detail he could hear from the existing tapes available. He worked with the best engineers in the business and worked wonders presenting LZ in the best possible light. You have to realize these recordings are nearly half a century old,and theres only so much one can do to put these recordings out.In my opinion is what we have is the very best we can expect, and i am so greatfull for Jimmy to have spent the energy to give us these marvelous recordings,to me they sound spectacular!

  • @yousellouts

Get analogue productions to do them with the same release format that they did for the Beach Boys. Give Jimmy Page a bunch of money to loan the Zeppelin I & II master tapes, then get Bernie Grundman to do 1 and try to match that very First UK pressing. Then give Rob Ludwig a bunch of money to come out of retirement and with an assistant engineer and try to match, if not better the RL SS for II. Then use the classic records metalwork for the rest of their discography.

  • @dukeandduke2942

My daughter found the Bob Ludwig cut of Led Zeppelin II in a used bin for $20.00 in an indie rock record store. The clerks obviously didn't know what they had-- or too cool to care. Michael, do yourself a favor and get the original-- it's so loud and magical, part of that magic the ability to shrink surface noise to nothing. Nothing compares to that record's ability to summon Jimmy Page into your room.

For me, Chad shouldn't go the UHQR route. The first album through Physical Graffiti sure, but the last three studio albums aren't really UHQR level material. I would love a Doors/Beach Boys style series with every album. It would make it much easier to manufacture and wouldn't need a pressing limit to stick to.
However, I feel you should touch on the Pink Floyd hints Chad has been dropping recently. I'm almost certain they're gonna be one of the classic rock bands we'll see as a UHQR soon.

    • @savadimitrov
      @savadimitrov 2 года назад +3

@Nicholas I wouldn't be so sure. The Doors weren't gonna do any analogue records too when they put out the digital box around 2009. Chad came along, offered the right money, cut the right deal and did a great job. I think every band has it's price and it's down to a label's budget to make it happen.
In my opinion The Beatles are the least likely to do a proper reissue series. Sure, they did the Mono box, but that's never coming back again, at least I don't think so. They're too busy working on average remixes.

I completely agree, Michael. Analogue Productions would be the best and logical choice for audiophile recordings of the Zep catalogue. The first five recordings are certainly "UHQR worthy," imho,. I feel the 2014 remasters are good, but certainly not the best out there. Hey Michael, I have to agree with you for sure that those Davis/Page remasters are not really the best way to enjoy their albums, although in my opinion a few of them are superior to original/old pressings I have - especially III and In Through The Out Door - and they are all easy to get and sound ok.
For the moment, instead of paying crazy money for the Classic Records reissues I still try to get US pressings of every album cut by George Piros - they sound really good!
A reissue by Analogue Productions using the Classic Records metalwork would make most sense.
However, every kind of an All-Analogue audiophile remaster of any LZ album would be an auto-buy for me.

I think I have a better chance to go to Valhalla and drink with Odin than to get a new audiophile pressing of Zeppelin. Even though Jimmy Page is a big audiophile fan, collects a lot of vinyl, and still to this day; hunts down different Zeppelin pressings for his own personal collection, he will not let it be known that he made a poor choice in releasing the digital reissues and that they are inferior to the pressings of the past. Yes, Chad has everything to make this dream a reality, but he can’t get Jimmy’s OK. Maybe, just maybe if Chad puts out the 45rpm of “Kind of Blue” UHQR in the late summer or early fall, and sends it to Jimmy, it will make Mr. Page cry and totally change his mind.

I totally agree with you on both fronts. Yes, it is WAY OVER DUE for this catalog, for sure. Not all of us can afford the current pricing of the Classic Record pressing. Yes, Chad has everything he needs to repress them, but Jimmy Page and Rober Plant hold the keys to the kingdom. I am, in no way an expert on any of this, but those guys have to approve Chad’s request to reprint these records, correct? If that is the correct, good luck….. from what I have heard they want nothing to do with it. So no approval, no repressing. Also, I would guess that Jimmy Would want to be so involved that they would sound horrible, just like the current reissues. Again, I am totally guessing here, I have no idea how this whole process works. Trust me I kill for audiophile pressing of these ICONIC records, but at the same time I am not holding my breath. I would be disappointed if it didn't happen at this point. Looking at the UHQR trend coming directly out of the Classic Records catalog, it's clear LZ is something everyone wants, including Analogue Productions and fans. If Chad can't get his hands on the tapes, he can use the stampers like he did for Kind of Blue and still release something killer. Of course he still needs permission to reissue them from Page and company, which could be the hold up. While I am clearly on the boat of wanting LZ reissues from AP (I only own the Page cuts), I'm also looking forward to reissues from The Who too. Aside from permission, his biggest challenge is the time it takes so much time to reissue a single title. He regularly says "quality takes time", and it absolutely does, but he needs to figure out how to scale up because one UHQR per year is my biggest pain point as a fan. I bet there's enough of a fan base now to support 3-4 titles per year.

I have several of the Classic series plus unopened doubles and three or had three of the fourth album. I sold two recently. I keep hearing about the Ludwig discs and their superior bass response. If they're the gold standard, I would think that today's better vinyl, Lathes, and electronics could replicate or exceed those records.

Agree, given that Analog Productions now owns the Classic stampers it would be the obvious choice. When I attended Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2019 I was able to hear Michael Fremer’s 45 rpm Classic Reocords test pressing of Stairway to Heaven at the PS audio suite, there was a standing ovation. I really can’t imagine it getting any better than that. LZ I though Houses of the Holy would sell 20,000 easily, probably many more given the prices for the most sought after pressings in the used market.

    • @Licoricedisc
      @Licoricedisc 2 года назад

Actually, that test pressing is not that great.
It came as a 'bonus' disc in the Classic Records Led Zeppelin Volume One box set, which I purchased from Classic Records in 2005. It was made up of the first 4 LZ albums.
There is another version of Stairway to Heaven on a 12" 45rpm bootleg that is much better... hope to track it down some day.

All in for all analogue reissues as long as they are available to all and not just USA - ie - MOFI, Analogue Productions series pressings that make these things way to expensive in U.K. and Europe generally. Please no UHQR either - really no need for that level on rock n roll records - even the greatest ones

So you know what I'm thinking (and hoping) ...I have original copies of Electric Ladyland Parts 1 & 2 purchased as a young teenager in England (not the gatefold nude cover, my parents would not allow it - those were different times as Lou Reed said). Chad of AS has already said that he is honoured to be working with the Hendrix Estate and I can only assume that the EL Master tapes are available to him to do what needs to be done. Wouldn't it be nice?

Very fortunate back in 2006 my order for the Classic Records 45rpm LZ flight case was fulfilled... as there were MANY, MANY who were not so lucky... and many more who expected to purchase on the next run...which never happened.
Also was lucky enough to have the 33rpm Classic versions too... couldn't imagine not having and paying what the asking prices are now!
It may take enough time to pass that Page is no longer alive as he is the one who controls the output of the LZ titles... and the one who seems to not want audiophile versions.

Let’s hope you are right. And very optimistic. The LZ records that are still in print sell’s very good. Lots of people that are new to vinyl see this records in a shop and buy them. And are happy, for many it sounds good. I don’t have any LZ in my collection because I know they don’t sound so good. I wait exactly for something that you are talking about. But. Another problem with QRP is that this are very expensive for us in Europe. And for me to buy for example 8 LZ albums for that price is almost impossible.
I bought on Friday new Jack White album, made in USA. Beautiful press I must say. For 26€ in Germany . So. It’s possible.
Please if you can ask some of this people about that topic. We are from another country, but we all love the same music ❤️ . Thanks for your video Michael.

Hi Michael. Longtime follower here. We can only dream.
Remember how long it took Jimmy Page to approve and release the Yardbirds 68 recordings?
Chad would have to prove to Jimmy that the repressing and remastering would outweigh the licensing and pressing costs.
I wasn’t a fan of the Classic Records reissue of LZ1, because I’m very lucky to own the LZ1 Turquoise first pressing. The Page/Marino remasters from 1990 sounded alright to me, because they have unique mixes. I hope someone can do better though.

Even if Chad has the Classic plates, don't they still need permission from the record label to repress?

@@quinnmarshall8653 The UHQR is what I was referring to. There were so many issues/returns with the KOB release... it took 2 replacements to get a quiet copy....so many others had the same issues. @@Licoricedisc Ah yes, I see. I also had to have my copy of KOB replaced due to surface noise.... very frustrating since I thought that making a quieter record was what the Clarity vinyl formulation was precisely for. With the advancements in clarity of the new reissue 33RPM LA Women by Bruce Botnick, just imagine what could be done with the LED Zeppelin, even if only the digital Jimi Page masters. You cannot assume that all of the master tapes are still playable. Classic is not always the answer, as the Classic RCA records are extremely clear, but extremely bright on the strings for my original, Classic, and Acoustic Sounds copies of Reiner sound. Never comments on how unlistenable bright strings on the RCA's can be.

IMO there is only one normal release that comes near to the old audiophile releases and that is the Mothership box set. But this is only a 4-LP compilation. Also here Jimmy Page has his fingers in it with the remastering. Still sounds better than the remastered album releases. There are certainly other opinions about it, but IMO the Jimmy Page album remasters are only average.
Remasters by Chad Kassem would be great, but please not in the expensive UHQR cardboard boxes for piece 200 euros. Audiophile vinyl should not only be made for the financially privileged. Normal earning people should also be able to enjoy it. I am also not one of the people who can say: "Your poverty pisses me off".
