While its true to an EXTENT for those with a "decent" connection, it wont help if a persons internet connection or even their PC just sucks in general. I've had mine set to 1500 for quite a number of years now, its actually the setting that ASC's Internet Booster automatically sets. I'm on FIOS Gigabit, for the record.. Also for the record, Not ALL websites allow the same Max MTU, which is what the point of "Auto" and MTU Discovery is for.
If you have fiber like I do then cat6a is a great choice. Also it's good to future proof your network for upgrades down the road. Thank you for watching and for commenting.

So.....if the router is currently on auto, and has set itself to say 1450, wouldn't your ping test show fragmentation above 1450? In other words, aren't you really manually setting the number to whatever the router already configured as automatic? Like your example - the router could not set above 1472 because of the headers, so it picked 1472 as the highest valid number. Then your testing shows that 1472 is the best number :D I think it would be rare to be less that 1472 tbh

Before I did the change, I ran my speed test and it gives me 20.15Mbps downstream whereas after modification based on your recommendation, my ping turn out to be lower than what I was getting before. It's 19.81Mbps.

There are a lot of flaws in the logic behind this "suggestion", leaving aside the fact that Auto settings in router are generally pretty good at maximizing performance, what the bigger packet size will result in is a lot slower downloads for big downloads, this is because even if we assume the same error rate in packet transmition, when you do have to re-recieve a packet you are recieving a huge chunk of data. THne you have the obvious problems, you are testing for the value the router has already set on its own, you are most likely limited by the hardware and ISP given speed than you are by a dynamic setting.
@@yesnt5986I'm assuming from your question your unable to undo what you've done manually so your only option is to do a factory reset. All routers have this option. Normally there are two ways of doing this. Either in the router settings or manually using a button on the side or under your router.

Cat6 cable over short distance (under 100 feet) won’t make any difference vs Cat5e for ISP connections up to 1Gbps

Be careful with setting the MTU as you can set it to low and things such as a web page will no longer work.

1,500 bytes is the maximum MTU size not 9000.
