The great thing is, every time he tells the story he adds something or changes it in a funny way. You can only do that if you have the ability to be spontaneously funny.
"Bumble" should be declared a National Treasure in England. Even when he's trying to be serious in the commentary box he's still bloody hilarious and leaves VERY experienced co-commentators in stitches making it hard for them to keep things serious. An off-the-field cricketing legend!
We invited (for a modest fee ;) Bumble to be the guest speaker at our club dinner 30+ years ago when I think he was still an umpire. And guess what? He told exactly the same story! Had us all in absolute stitches of course - that and his many other hilarious tales and impressions. He was great - and really lovely too. Stayed for the whole meal although he was the picture of parsimony when it came to the grog (unlike us!).
David Lloyd is excellent as a raconteur with a stand-up comedian's timing. The quality and timing of his words are superior to the quality and timing of his batting but then, he had to do something when he was younger. Every batsman that faced Lillee and Thompson during the 1974/5 ashes series should have got a medal for bravery.
Love listening to the players from the 60's through to the 90's. They knew it was a game - a bloody serious game - that they were lucky enough to be good at, and hadn't yet become the enriched 'stars' of today having to toe the party line and listen to the PR 'experts'.
The bit he left out, was before the tour Lloyd is reputed to have said, "That Thomson - I could play him with me plonker!" And then he set about proving it.
Agreed. I've always considered him the best commentator this side of Sid Waddel. But you have to like Thommo also. Unlike so many egotistical sportsmen of today, he comes across as very modest & likable.
I was playing a local league game back in the 1990's when this exact same thing happened to a team mate. The opposition's opening quick hit our guy right in the knackers, just like Lloyd gets it here and he was also wearing one of those useless protectors which split and cut his bollocks up badly. By that time most players weren't stupid enough to wear them but this guy didn't have his own box so he'd pulled the old protector out of our old colts team kit stash. After being hit he trotted off and straight into the changing room, where I found him bent down over a wooden bench in agony.
I'm guessing that most of us that have played the game even at local level have been hit in the nuts at some point by the opposing quick. It's bad enough even if it's the medium pacer...so how the hell you even walk again after being on the sharp end of a prime Jeff Thomson is something I don't really want to think too much about.
That's absolutely classic he's a comedian he had the protector made of plastic and Thompson smashed and cracked it and the plastic cut David Lloyd's ball sack now that's firepower love Anthony Fed ex lol
You're saying Australians are talented, yet humble? Jesus, that must be when they're on their own in a dark room and their imagination is in full flight.
The sadness is that most people in the UK listen to TMS on the Radio and Brumble took the money to be on TV. In the UK, and I don't know about the rest of the world, we watch on TV with the sound off and listen to the commentary on the radio as it's far more descriptive and...... you get the better stories, Such a shame Bumble took the money. Otherwise the hilarity we get on TMS would have been evn greater than it has been
"Can you take the pain away and leave the swelling" 😂😂 5:18 Bumble is a LEGEND!
Don't know anyone that doesn't love him. His knowledge of the game, when he's serious is second to none. 😊
How good is that? Heard it a million times, and still cracks me up!

Englands answer to Skull. 😊
That is one of the funniest commentries of a sporting event I have ever seen.
Still wiping the tears from my face.
David the ever humorous man, one can't forget his wonderful voice behind the microphone 🎤

What a yarn and what a generation of story tellers
both thomo and bumble are my absolute favorites love these guys!!!

Yes, not even wearing a helmet either. Thommo before he did his shoulder was the fastest bowler I ever saw.
Ditto - every batsman who faced the West Indies in the eighties.
Bumble, love yer to bits. Thanks.
Bumble... the best story teller.....absolutely hilarious..!!!
David Lloyd is an absolute one off, he should be given an honour, love him and miss him greatly.
Perfect, especially the Fiery Fred impression.

Great Monologue from Bumble
He knows how to tell a story :-)
"it might hit the bat" ROFL!!!
40+ years on, and i still wince every time i see that delivery.
Agreed. I've always considered him the best commentator this side of Sid Waddel.
But you have to like Thommo also. Unlike so many egotistical sportsmen of today, he comes across as very modest & likable.
Well done and shame to all those haters of Thommo - Betwen them, he and Bumble have creatged a great cricket story

Never gets old 😄
What a funny man Bumble is. It's not the same without him & Holding commentating when in the UK
4 great former cricketers, 5 great broadcasters (Nicholas is alright), and James Bloody Brayshaw.
"I recon you used to bowl in a wig "
one of the great characters
A natural raconteur, or I've never seen one. Classic stuff.
"You're voice was a bit higher last time we met "
they are all time greatest player in cricket history
Bumble is an honorary Australian 👍
We need more Bumble videos; he is just pure class.
It's true! The guy up the other end was looking for the quick single. LOL
What a gem bumble is God bless him 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bumble for PM! He's so much better than most of the stand up comedians!
He'd be no good... one month out of twelve his voice goes on holiday...
(if you don't believe that, he mentions it in this video)
Absolute legend
Bril!. Legends all!. And they probably would have had a beer together after the match!.....
English dry smart humour is SO much better than american obvious crap humour.... LOVE from Australia COBBER!!!!
What a great story
THOMMO - the Mike Tyson of cricket
Fabulous from Bumble🤣🤣🤣
That's absolutely classic he's a comedian he had the protector made of plastic and Thompson smashed and cracked it and the plastic cut David Lloyd's ball sack now that's firepower love Anthony Fed ex lol

Bumble is brilliant. Nass Atherton and Bumble are always love listening to.
Can anybody tell me where I can find the whole interview?:p
A raconteur of the highest order.
Pure gold.. Bumble is a legend.
2:12 He tells a great story.
David "Bumbles" Lloyd, the most Australian Englishman that ever lived; talented, yet humble, yet irreverent. Come to Oz, we will adopt you!
You're saying Australians are talented, yet humble? Jesus, that must be when they're on their own in a dark room and their imagination is in full flight.
Nice comment
Aussies are not humble.
What a lovely comment - come to England and we will adopt you! Thank you
He should have been a stand up comedian 😅
Bumble is the funniest
Cracked me up Bumble! Russel Peters who?
Rip tony g
David Lloyd only played 9 tests I’m not sure how he built such a big career for himself after the game I barely heard of him when he was playing
How many Tests did you play ? I've never heard of you.
Bumble should have been a stand-up comic.. i'll go for his shows!
Brilliant 👏😂
Can you take the pain away.....and leave the swelling ?
😢
Bumble is an absolute genius.. Should be knighted!
Brilliant!
That's how to tell a story.
Bumble wat a true legend
No one funnier than Kerry okeeffe!!!
Bumble is Sidhu of England 😂
Hilarious! :D
But i dont understand what he said at 4:20

James Brayshaw....Why is he there? Legends only please....
In the plums or what’s left of them lol
Thumbs up for Bumble
hilarious !
I love bumble .great entertainer.best commentator
Bumble: Cricketer/broadcaster/stand up comedian. (Sometimes deliberately so, sometimes by accident, but always with hilarious consequences.)
Fantastic Bumble!
Bumbles a LEGEND !!
the old turkey trying to get out Bumble really miss your class on commentary now
Omg hahahaha Bumble!!!!
Thomson’s completely out of his depth when it comes to comedy. Bumble could be a professional comedian, perfect comic timing.
Wasn't much good to him in 1975...... your point?
He had his time (sitting down)
Thommo was a naturally funny bloke.
Well to be fair Thommo was a fast bowler and I'd say Bumbles was out of his depth facing him.
Yes he could be a comedian - a third rate Working men's club comedian . The cricket equivalent of Ant and Dec. Spoils Sky cricket .
What did he say at 4:20?
One short comment and he killed it. Thommo nowhere near him.
Brayshaw still gets a gig lol
who can give me the link for the full video ?
Senthaa earakuven tenara😄😃😀
beautiful
sry but what did he say he wore at 4:05 ?
shpilzak
A pink "Litesome" (the name of the box, in those days)
