The "I can speak with a British accent" is a reference to Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. The movie came out in 1991 and starred Kevin Costner as Robin Hood, he didn't even try a British accent. It's a pretty great movie, the main villain is played by Alan Rickman and he saves the movie, you should watch it.
I had heard he tried the accent but it was so horrible they asked him to stop. The guys a good actor but can't do accents at all.

It was because.. all other Robin Hood movies .. actors who played Robin had terrible accents.. and I don’t just mean prince of thieves either .. the early versions as well ..

That kid that was screaming and running was a parody of Macauley Caulkin from Home Alone. That movie was a huge hit at the time.
Fun fact: the camera breaking the glass was accidental but they went with it 😂 Also Blazing Saddles is iconic and one of a kind film. I hope you guys get to enjoy it!

Yes. Any of those would have been better than Robin Hood Men in Tights. It is one of Mel Brooks worst movies.
Everyone leaves out "The Producers" .... I saw it in the theatre the day it was released and when that Nazi started singing "Springtime for Hitler" I had an Asthma Attack!
Don't forget High Anxiety. The ultimate Hitchcock parody! Brooks is a comic GENIUS!
“Silent Movie” is comedy GOLD and is frequently missed. I strongly recommend it in addition to the suggestions
This is a spoof of Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. You should definitely watch that one as well. Edit: And Alan Rickman! How could I forget?

Even before he was cast in the role, when I read Harry Potter, I pictured Allan Rickman as Snape, but I pictured him as he looked in Prince of Thieves. (And I pictured Ralph Finnes as Remus Lupin before his casting. )
Alan Rickman was the only thing that made that made it watchable!

There are also aspects of it that spoof the Errol Flynn Robin Hood. Both are worth watching.
The whole scene in the hall, with Robin coming in with the boar slung over his shoulders, is a take off from 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn (playing the Robin of a generation). :)
So is the shadow fight, which got spoofed in other movies too
King John, calls the boar "tref" which means absolutely NOT kosher. One of Mel's jewish jokes.
The hangman is happy because he's gotten to reprise his role, since he was the orignal hangman in the Mel Brooks movie "Blazing Saddles". 😊
I rarely feel so old as when seeing these two not get the references in a movie that I grew up with.

Dom Deluise (The Godfather) never seems to get the credit he deserves for his comedic genius. The late 70's into the early 80's were so much fun and he was a perfect accent to it. The hangman from "Blazing Saddles" is just a bonus too. OMG! do "Blazing Saddles". I thought you did.
Blazing saddles might be too much for them to handle,it's pretty rough for certain people but is one of the funniest films ever.
They are getting closer to being ready for Blazing Saddles. They need to understand that he spoofs everyone and everything. Nobody is safe and it’s hilarious. One thing about Mel is that he appears in all his movies.

Perhaps they have never seen "The Godfather" movies. The Dom DeLouise segment is such a great parody of that.

The slapping with the glove was common for challenging to a dual as it was an insult. It played well with Robin "picking up the gauntlet" and responding. Also, the boy running while screaming was supposed to emulate Macaulay Culkin as he said he "must go home alone now".
The reference to Blazing Saddles is another classic from Mel Brooks. Cleavon Little portrayed the sheriff in that western spoof. You MUST check it out. A LOT of cultural references you're going to miss so the more you watch them, the more you'll understand. That's Cary Elwes (el-ways) who is playing Robin. This was his go-to type of movie back in the day.

This is a Mel Brooks film... you can't go wrong with Mel. Two of my favorites by him are "Spaceballs" which spoofs Star Wars... and "Blazing Saddles" a western that makes fun of prejudiced people.
And Young Frankenstein!!

blazing saddles is a favorite in my home . i grew up watching old westerns, so i enjoyed one aspect of the humor. my daughter did not understand that side of the movie, however she enjoyed another.

The main lead is played by Cary Elwes. If you want to see him play a completely different character of robin hood and Westley, I would suggest The live action 1994 The Jungle Book. People forget about this movie but it's actually pretty good.
It also stars Sam Neil (Alan from Jurassic Park), John Cleese (Lancelot from Monty Python), and Lena Headey (Cersei from Game of Thrones).
It would be awesome if you reacted to this movie that has such a good cast, and is entertaining. No CGI animals, they are real in this one👍🏼
When they were getting the tights out of the eggs that is a reference to a brand of pantyhose that was popular in the 70’s and 80’s. The deal with them was instead of regular packaging they came in a plastic egg and were called L’Eggs hose. As a kid we loved to play with the eggs and make things with them.
Glad I'm not the only one who remembers that... Lol.
My mom used to get that brand of hose when I was very young. The eggs were fun to play with.

When Mel Brooks' name is attached to a film, you can be certain it will be outrageously funny!! Blazing Saddles is possibly the funniest--and most politically INcorrect--movie ever, & is one of my 2 top favorite movies of all time. The other is West Side Story, the original 1961 version, which is another film you would both love!!! Fabulous music (with incredibly pertinent to the story lyrics) & excellent, engrossing story!! Won 10 Academy Awards, too, including Best Picture!
If you didn't get the blazing saddles reference you really do have to see the movie it makes fun of racism it's a parody of a western

If you watch a number of Mel Brooks movies you’ll start to notice certain small jokes that are favourites of his and get reused. They’re still funny though.
His son too! He did the Joker's voice before Hamill and wrote the book World War Z.
The Sheriff in this is the GOAT. He's just a fantastically written and performed character. 😂😂😂
Mel Brooks is a comic genius! Blazing Saddles could not be made today, so much Politically Incorrect. People had thicker skin back then and could still laugh at each other. Young Frankenstein is another Mel Brooks Classic, perfect for October and Halloween. There are others but both of these are a must!!!! You two are awesome and thanks as always. the pumped up sneakers, The clapper, white men can't jump line and all the direct and veiled jabs at "prince of thieves" are all jokes that are really of the era that this movie came out in.
Mel Brooks is a genius when it comes to satire and irony. The characters Asneeze is R&B/Soul singer Issac Hayes. Ever heard him sing "Shaft" the theme from the 1971 movie of the same name?

*EDITED TO ADD* - Are you guys familiar with fax machines? If not, you can look it up, but sending a "fox message" was them sending a "fax message". Also, the Jewish man offering circumcisions, was portrayed by the genius himself, Mel Brooks.
Though not one of his, I also suggest "Clue" (again) for some major laughs. Jane Wiedlin, guitarist for "The Go Go's" has a quick cameo. She's the one with the short dark hair.

The thing is, they've not seen the movies that are being parodied so a lot of the honor good over their head.
They should see a few westerns before "Blazing Saddles". There should see a Frankenstein movie. They should watch a few Hitchcock movies before "High Anxiety", and, so on.

Good points, but since they don't seem to have watched much of anything other than sports movies or something for the kids, they may need some help understanding some of the great classic western and horror movies, too.
Still, I think if they watched a movie about Frankenstein's monster, they'd probably get "Young Frankenstein" a little better like you said. When it comes to westerns, several may have very similar storylines, so there may be some confusion. Frankenstein's monster... not much to be confused about. 😄
I wish they'd watch "Stagecoach". I like the '60s and '80s versions.
"The Cowboys", starring John Wayne is an absolute favorite. I think I'm the only woman in my circle of female friends who like at least a few western movies and shows, but my mom said she grew up watching them with her dad, and as time went on, she watched her old favorites and my brother and I also watched.

I love this movie! So happy to see you react to this one! Yes, the actor playing Robin is indeed Cary Elwes, who was on The Princess Bride (as well as the first Saw movie, Days of Thunder, and all sorts of other stuff). The joke about him being able to speak with an English accent was a not-at-all subtle jab at Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (which this movie heavily parodied) in which Kevin Costner played Robin while making no attempt at all to use an English accent as would be appropriate to the character. The rabbi is Mel Brooks, director of the movie (and several other hilarious films that you need to watch). The mafia-type guy (who is a clear parody of The Godfather) is Dom Deluise, who was in several Mel Brooks films. The character you were trying to remember from The Princess Bride? Well, "Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." The bit where the crowd commented about "A black sheriff?!" and Achoo said "It worked in Blazing Saddles!" is referencing another Mel Brooks film (Blazing Saddles), which is a western that a major part of the premise is that a black man is appointed sheriff to a small "wild west" town with the intent that the townsfolk would reject him.
If you enjoyed this, then you DEFINITELY have to watch more of Mel Brooks. I thought about recommending Blazing Saddles since it was mentioned on this one, just so you could understand the reference, but even though I am certain you would both love that one (especially Jordan), I feel compelled instead to recommend Spaceballs. It is the most hilarious sci-fi parody ever, and I think you won't be able to stop laughing the whole time. Whichever one you watch next, I can't wait to see your reaction! Oh, yeah, and . . .

Fun fact: Cary Elwis was offered the part in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves but passed to play in The Princess Bride.
Also fun fact: he totally roasted Kevin Costner because In Prince of thieves he didn't speak with the English accent.
The timeline doesn't seem to add up for Cary Elwes to have turned down Prince of Thieves due to The Princess Bride, as The Princess Bride was released in 1987 and Prince of Thieves wasn't released until 1991. The other fact is absolutely true, though!
To explain the English accent joke. Robin was played by Errol Flynn who was Australian and didn't have an English accent, also played by Kevin Costner a year or two before this film came out who was American and didn't have an English accent. There have been many others but the most famous was Errol Flynn and the most recent (as of that time) was Kevin Costner. Blazing Saddles is another brilliant Mel Brooks film that you should definitely watch. Just remember going in that Richard Pryor wrote some scenes and that it's ok to laugh at them...
Nylon stockings from a company called Leggs used to come in plastic eggs. They were very popular in the 70s & 80s.

This movie is funny on it’s own but it really helps to get some of the jokes if you have seen the 1991 Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Some of the scenes are parodied in a hilarious manner.

It's always tough when folks watch parodies before they watch the movies being parodied. Probably should have watched Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood" and Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves", at least, first. The jokes would have made more sense.
I agree 100%. They would have understood the "... I can speak with an English accent" joke then, or the boar scene (Flynn's). They also parodied Disney's "Robin Hood" with the archery competition in particular.
And some of the 1990s references and culture I don’t think they completely got either.

The creepy sheriff is based on the Sheriff from the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" that starred Kevin Costner. In that movie, the Sheriff also tried to forcibly marry Maid Marianne. The whole film closely follows Costner's film, from the first scene in the middle eastern prison, to the ending where King Richard makes an appearance. Kevin Costner movies were very big, around this time, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was one of the biggest. If you're ever ready for a not so lighthearted action/adventure version of Robin Hood, then the Costner film is worth checking out. A lot of the scenes from Men in Tights will make a lot more sense, after seeing Costner's film, including LaTrine making Prince John an eyeball frittata.
A Knight’s Tale would be a good one for them to do…a lot of great music in that one .

Albert Brooks stars in a Rom-Com called "Defending Your Life" that has an interesting plot with scattered humor. It's always been a personal favorite of mine because of its "afterlife" concept.
Albert Brooks is not Mel’s son, Max Brooks writer of World War Z is Mel’s son.
All right, whichever of you suggested they watch this movie WITHOUT watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves FIRST...did them a HUGE disservice! Haven't watched their reaction yet as I write this, but I'll be SHOCKED if they catch any of the jokes and references Brooks made.
If you're going to suggest a Brooks film, maybe Spaceballs would have been better, as they've seen the Star Wars movies already.

One of my top Disney animated classics is their version of Robin Hood, with talking animals as the characters. Your girls would probably love it.
Next to Prince of Thieves, my favourite live action Robin Hood is Errol Flynn 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938)
There's also Rocket Robin Hood, a Canadian cartoon series from the mid-1960s. Robin Hood in space, and just as weird as it sounds.

I adored the Disney version of Robin Hood as a kid. It took me awhile to learn to properly enjoy any other version of the story, as it seemed off having the characters portrayed by people instead of anthropomorphic Disney animals! Interestingly enough, it was Prince of Thieves that first led me to enjoy other adaptations.

Mel Brooks “The Producers” is still my all time favorite film. Using satire to mock racist ideology was risky but effective as Blazing Saddles later proved.

Robinhood Prince Of Thieves (starring Kevin Costner) would be a great (more serious) RobinHood story you guys would love! This movie is also spoofing on that one.

(Everything I Do) I Do It For You, by Bryan Adams, was written for the movie, but became far more popular. It was an absolute juggernaut, both on music charts and in sales. Personally, it's also one of my favourite songs.

I’d definitely recommend another Mel Brooks film “Spaceballs” which is a slapstick comedy making fun of Star Wars and Star Trek. If you like Carey Elwes (the actor who plays Robin) you may enjoy a more serious role from him in the movie “Glory”, a civil war movie about an all black regiment packed with amazing actors like Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman.

Jay likes Star Wars, though. I can't recommend Spaceballs for that reason. It's never felt like it was having fun and laughing with Star Wars but rather maliciously mocking it. It's always felt mean spirited to me and I have never liked because of that.

Robin Hood was portrayed by Cary Elwes. One of my favorite movies of his was called The Crush. It's intense, but really good.
We always called movies like these 'stupid humor'. Family favorites!! So many of these great movies out there.
"Don't be a menace to south central while drinking your juice in the hood" is the best one.. But they have to watch the movies that they're parodied from first. Like Juice, Menace to Society, Boyz n the hood..
I miss those visual, satirical, absurd slapstick comedies from Mel Brook's, Leslie Nielsen, the Hot Shot films with Charlie Sheen, The Silence of the Hams with Billy Zane or National Lampoon's Loaded Guns 1 with Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson.
Modern humor is too dated, grounded in pop culture, meta, edgy, sarcastic, serves as a platform to push someone's agenda or is too politically correct and censored.

The scene with the knights getting felled like dominos is an homage to a 1950s Danny Kaye movie called The Court Jester. It's old, it's in black and white, and it's brilliant. You really should think about putting it on your list. It's one that not many other people will have reacted to, but it is hilarious, and if you like Men in Tights, you will like The Court Jester as well.

This is one of my all time favorites! So hilarious! And the English accent line was in reference to and kind of roasting the Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner. He tried to speak with an English accent and failed miserably. 🤣
if you want to see the main actor, whose name is Cary Elwes, in a more dramatic role, i recommend the movie Glory, an historic great great movie. It also stars denzel washington, matthew broderick and morgan freeman and i think it is one of the best movies about civil war.

Yes, the lead actor is Cary Elwes. He is still acting and according to IMDB has about 6 movies coming out next year..holy cow! This is a Mel Brooks directed film He is 96 years young and still going strong. He and his son had the cutest public service announcement clips on youtube during the pandemic shutdown. Mel almost always has cameo appearances in his films, in this one he was the man who performed " half off" circumcisions. I would rank this movie in his second tier of films along with " Spaceballs" which has a ton of Star Wars references, and " History of the World " and " High Anxiety" In the top tier I would put " Blazing Saddles" which they referenced in the end of this film and my favorite is " Young Frankenstein" IMHO Mel hits pure comedic gold with Young Frankenstein. The actress playing "Latrine" is Tracey Ullman who is a brilliant comedian who I believe created the Simpsons and is the voice of Marge Simpson, she also has an 80s hit song called THEY DONT KNOW , with a cameo by Paul McCartney.
Don't forget the Mel Brooks original... "The Producers!"

Latrine giving the Sheriff a literal lifesaver mint at the end was a joke I didn't get for years - we call a similar candy 'polo mints' , so the pun went right past me :p

Mel Brooks has been the king of satire films since the late 60s! This makes reference to some of his earlier work, and pokes fun at the 1991 movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (and other Robin Hood movies before that, but that was the most recent one when this movie came out). Since like Kevin Costner was Robin Hood and super obviously an American action hero type lol. But it's still definitely worth a watch for Alan Rickman, who knocks it out of the park as the Sheriff of Nottingham (also made fun of here as the Sheriff of Rottingham 😂).
Check out Young Frankenstein (pokes fun at old horror movies), The Producers (makes fun of musical theater and Hitler - Brooks is Jewish and fought in WWII), Spaceballs (parody of Star Wars), or Blazing Saddles (parody of westerns, makes racist culture look utterly foolish in the most blatant way possible lol.)
The boy running in the forest was a reference to home alone where Kevin the youngest son shaved for the first time, also the black sheriff, was also a reference to blazing saddles also a mel Brooks movie about a black sheriff in the wild west, the sound the fox made is the same sound the gopher makes in caddyshack about golfers, most of the reference were from robin hood prince of thieves.🙂

The, "Unlike other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent" line was a shot at Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Good one to put in the queue if it's not there.
Kevin Costner was a good sport about it, thankfully. If they haven't already, they should treat themselves to Costner's movie Dances with Wolves. No sports, no lyrical music, but it's such a stunning movie. They loved Field of Dreams, but Dances with Wolves is hands down my favorite Costner movie. Epic. :)
And every Robin Hood in Hollywood's history. None spoke with an English accent. Erol Flynn was probably the closest with his Australian accent.
Another hilarious movie Cary Elwes appears in, though in a smaller role since Jim Carrey stars, is “Liar Liar”.
Also, Asneez is played by Isaac Hayes, a legendary soul musician. His long version of “Walk On By” is incredible and worth reacting to.

I remember watching this movie at a late night screening/girls night out with a group friends; great memories over all and still one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies. Going by your reaction to the end of this one, I can definitely recommend that you react to "Blazing Saddles" next. ^_^

“ALMOST FAMOUS” please 🙏🏼 You’ll absolutely love the movie and the soundtrack. Yes Jordan, Robin Hood is seen as a good vigilante, a heroic outlaw, a bandit with a heart of gold. This is a parody of the Robin Hood movies, I think the jokes would have been funnier if you’d seen those first. All in all not my favorite type of comedy but hope y’all liked it.

being a Mel Brooks film, you noticed lots of familiar actors. a fun fact - Robert Ridgely, who played the hangman, also plays a hangman in Blazing Saddles, Brooks' masterpiece. I would caution you about that one - it's loaded with racial slurs. it's absolutely hilarious, but be warned. one of the funniest movies ever made. I put it up there with Monty pythons Holy grail.
No joke, man. It's hard to find a better comedy writing team than Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor.
It's a satire about how stupid racism is and racists are, if you can't understand why they wrote it that way then you missed the entire point. Also warning them ruins them figuring out that it's satire on their own....
The movie camera smashing into a window is a nice little nod to another of Brooks's movies, "High Anxiety", which I also recommend. 😁
I love Mel Brooks’ Jewish humor in Lox and Bagels in Robin of LOXley and Marian of BAGELle. Still has me busting at the seams to this day. 😅😂

Well now you have done it. Mel brooks is a Genius. At 96 he is a sharp as a tack. His film portfolio is tremendous and a real amazing sum of work. Space Balls should be on your radar, an funny spoof of Star Wars. Another great choice in a sea of fantastic movies to choose from.
The guy who played Robin is also the guy from that movie with Alicia Silverstone''s entitled 'The Crush' it's a early 90s movie and U can check it out too

The English Accent line is in reference to the 1991 Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves ( you should definitely react to that by the way ) which starred Kevin Costner and his very American accent + of course all the other American actors to have played the role.
In 1991 Kevin Costner starred in the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Mel Brooks, being known for his humorous parodies, made Robin Hood: Men In Tights in 1993 as a spoof on the Costner movie and a number of other renditions of the Robin Hood story. (Watching the Costner film might help you make a better connection to the aspects being spoofed. Additionally it is a pretty good action / adventure / drama.) I actually visited a Robin Hood museum in Nottingham, England and drove along the Sherwood Forest in 1994.
This movie parodies two of the most successful versions of Robin ever committed to film: 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood" starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Olivia de Havilland and Claude Rains, and 1991's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" starring Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Flynn's Robin Hood movie was the most popular and most successful, and generally the one people thought about whenever they thought about Robin Hood in the movies. Costner's version aimed at (supposedly) telling a more "historically accurate" version of the legend, thus the lack of any "tights" and tunic looks in the costumes (they still got it wrong, actually, but whatever--Robin Hood is as much myth as possible historical figure).
This parody film uses a lot of elements from the Costner version of Robin Hood--like the surprise appearance of an A-list actor as King Richard, and the one in this film is mimicking the accent of the one in Costner's film--but it also uses a LOT of bits from the Flynn version as well, right down to the matching color scheme for all the Merry Men and the entrance of Robin into the feast hall carrying a dead animal on his shoulders and exchanging quippy dialogue with Prince John (the prince is completely left out of the Costner version).
I actually highly recommend both films. Flynn's '38 film seems a little cheesy sometimes, especially now, but it's still a wonderful adventure flick filled with some of the best swashbuckling swordfights ever committed to film.
Costner's version is HIGHLY enjoyable, lots of action, beautifully filmed and scored, and it had Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman in the same movie. It's so enjoyable you are able to forget in about 5 minutes that Costner can't speak with an English accent at all. It's completely forgivable.

Another good movie if you like the “ Robin Hood” type genre is “The Court Jester” starring Danny Kaye. It is so good and one the whole family can watch too. It was done in the 1950’s. It was one of my favourites when I was a kid and still is now

I just realized this has almost the same plot as "Spaceballs' even the chastity belt is like the virgin alarm. I know they are both Mel Brooks films.
I really wish you'd seen Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves before this. So much of it directly spoofs that movie. A lot of the rest of it was also a product of the time. For example, the weird screaming kid was a Home Alone reference.
Since you have been introduced to Mel Brooks, you really have to watch "Young Frankenstein" now!! 🥰 Fabulous spoof of the original Frankenstein movies!
And I think you and your kids should have a family movie night to watch Disney's "Robin Hood" too (doesn't have to be for the channel). Especially after watching this and being more aware of the basic premise, I think you would enjoy watching the animated version with the kiddos. 😊 (It's on Disney+)

I like how Jay instantly reacted humorously to "The Club" for Horses. About the Blazing Saddles reference, in case it hasn't been explained already, that's another film Mel Brooks directed. Cleavon Little (Bart) gets appointed as a Black Sheriff in the movie by a politician. They both ironically become enemies. It's yet another Mel Brooks classic.
