Man, this is one of my all time favorite movies. Thank you for doing this. There is so much awesome trivia associated with this movie but I will keep it short. Jeff Cohen (Chunk) actually felt a kind of way about his portrayal in this (and the other movies he had been in) and stopped acting because he got tired of being The Fat Kid. He became extremely health conscious and lost the weight. He went to Richard Donner (Goonies director) and asked for a recommendation to get into college. When Donner read Cohen's notes detailing his early life and struggles (being overweight and "Truffle Shuffle") Donner and his wife 0ffered to pay for his college education. He became a successful lawyer.

It's basically saying she dropped him on more than one occasion while he was just a baby & it's implied that he suffered breaks & injuries (possibly head trauma) & that maybe this explains what happened to him that he turned out the way he did, which, as sweet as he is, this part & the "Mama, you been bad" parts always saddened me tremendously bc Sloth deserved alot better in life. Also, was so happy to see Sean Austin get to be part of the ultimate adventure trilogy Lord of the Rings! And Josh Brolin as Sean's older brother became an amazing actor. And Chunk, is a really cool guy, I met him at the comic book store I worked at in Berkeley. He was running for campus prez and he was using his Chunk character as part of poster campaign. He's a sweet guy with a great sense of humor. Was studying to be a Hollywood lawyer...and that's what he's doing to this day. 😀

A couple of things you should know:
    1) Their mention of an octopus wasn't them making shit up. In the directors cut, they actually had to fight a monster octopus in the waters outside of the pirate ship.
    2) Even in the 1980s, the salvage laws in the U.S. would have put that ship in the possession of the people who found it, and given the fact that every single one of those adults knew that the Goonies rediscovered it, the ship and everything on it would technically be theirs, so them and all of their families would have been rich after the events in this film.

Such an awesome movie, and I love your sign!
Filmed in and around Astoria, Oregon, where the movie was actually set.
Marbles actually has a variety of games. I grew up playing several types of marbles games, but the most common marbles game is called knockout. To play one draws a circle on the pavement, usually about the size of a basketball hoop. Both players put an equal amount of marbles in the center of the circle. Each player has a shooter, a larger than normal marble, about an inch in diameter, and they take turns shooting at the marbles in the center of the circle [to shoot, one curls their index finger around the shooter marble loosely with their thumb behind the shooter marble. The thumb flicks forward propelling the shooter into the circle of marbles: that's taking a shot], each player picks up their shooter after it comes to a stop, and each player keeps any of the regular marbles that they knock out of the circle. Continue taking turns until the circle is empty. That's the competitive version. The friendly version has one player putting an odd number of marbles in the center and each player collects those that they knock out. The winner is the one that knocks out the most marbles, then the player gets their marbles back.
I took anatomy and physiology in college. We worked with cadavers. Dissected dead people. It was not comfortable, but I made good grades. Still not comfortable. In fact, I had to drop the class the first time I tried to take it, cos it was soon after my foster parents were murdered, and I just couldn't handle cadavers so soon after.
The man behind the prosthetics and the wiggling ears was John Matuzak, former Oakland Raider and massive human. The steroids he took to get so big for his playing days were a large part of the death of him, unfortunately. But he was great as Sloth.
They actually BUILT One Eyed Willie's ship, and it was actually fairly seaworthy. They tried to sell it, and then give it away after the filming of the movie was done, but found no takers. It was destroyed. 😞 None of the cast saw the ship until the scene in the movie where it is first shown because they wanted to get the cast's actual reaction to the ship they'd built. Take two was used for the movie because they were rendered so speechless at their first look that they couldn't proceed.
The octopus that was referred to was a deleted scene. It looked cheesy and bad so it deserved to end up on the cutting room floor.
Sea caves can be more than deep enough to have a ship in. And it is possible for there to have been a channel made or remaining that would be deep enough for the ship to sail out. Considering all the engineering and equipment that Willie and his crew would have needed for these booby traps, it's possible that they could have cleared a breakaway channel for the ship to escape when someone stole Willie's share. Possible, but extremely unlikely. But that's the fun of movies, right?

    • @xzonia1
      @xzonia1 2 года назад

Yeah, we played the friendly version of marbles as a kid, except we each put an equal amount of our own marbles in the center of the circle and tried to knock everyone else's out, and whoever was left standing with one marble inside the circle at the end was the winner. We all got our own marbles back at the end of the game. :)

Anne Ramsey, who played the main villain, Mama Fratelli, is mostly known from 2 80s movies: this and a comedy called "Throw Momma from the Train", starring Danny Devito and Billy Crystal.
I suggest you watch the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Strangers on a Train" first because 'Throw Momma..." is partly a spoof on it.
Also, Corey Feldman, who played Mouth, was in a lot of movies in the 80s and 90s. He was in "The 'Burbs" which starred Tom Hanks. Hanks' wife was played by Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia from Star Wars). It's a mystery comedy. Feldman was one of the neighbors.

You were right about it being filmed in the Pacific Northwest! The Goonies house is still in Astoria, Oregon on the coast about 90 miles west of Portland. We used to go visit and see all the locations in Astoria, Cannon Beach, and along the famous highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean. It is a stunning drive with beautiful hiking locations. 💜

The old woman is Ann Ramsay who won an academy award for her role in the Billy Crystal/Danny DeVito comedy Throw Momma From The Train. A must watch for you.
Sloth was played by ex defensive lineman John Mutuszak, who sadly passed away a few years after the Goonies was made. He played for the then Oakland Raiders.
Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk, left acting and became an entertainment lawyer.
Steven Speilberg was exeutive producer. To keep the excitement of the ship alive, the cast of kids were not privied to the ship before shooting the reveal. Their reaction was genuine.
