I was born in early 2005, and I remember Frutiger Aero being the very first aesthetic I actually recognized as, well, an aesthetic. It’s so nice to now see videos talking about an aesthetic that was so prominent during my early childhood, but disappeared during the rest of it, including specific desktop screensavers/ wallpapers, soap bottles, and even the wii plane-flying thing, which I remember loving. Take care, Shaii and kylie!

This and frutiger metro are my latest obsession honestly. Aero is a dreamy child-like nostalgia of how the world felt, while metro feels like what everyone hoped being a teen would be as a kid. I hope the latter gets more coverage sooner or later, but a lovely feeling from everything here regardless.

    • @Egmanila

Describing Frutiger Metro as "what everyone hoped being a teen would be as a kid" is such a perfect description of the aesthetic - I didn't realize it had a name, but I'm glad I read your comment so I can fall down that rabbit hole of nostalgia

Is it possible to have nostalgia for more than two different decades? Or one full decade and two halves of other decades? Young adulthood supposedly feels like the mid point in life since that's when our brain development is complete, and everything that comes after that registers as "recent".

speaking of lost shiny flash stuff, the flash game Bubble Tanks 3 had two paid extra content packs called "Parts Packs" that weren't archived due to only being accessible after logging in with a long-dead authentication server. i think one of the developers even wrote on his resume about how good the protection was...which is true, but now i paid for it and can't use it anymore :(

I spent soooo much time on that website and various other now defunct virtual pet worlds from 2007-2009. I'd love for you to make a video covering some of these other lost virtual pet flash games/mmos because ohhhhhhhh boy was it a saturated market around that time and there are so many obscure ones that probably live in the deepest corners of my memory.

Thank you for the great video. I really love topics like this and lost media in general. I've been someone who "archives" things I find ever since I was a kid, I guess you could also call that hoarding, but then when I first owned a PC that ran windows 95 (which I still have to this day lol) that archival spirit transitioned to the virtual world too. I try to save anything and I rarely delete things because I feel preservation is important.
I'm looking forward for the next video and I'll be again waiting for you to include another Boards of Canada song in the background even if it didn't happen in this video.

Hey, if you're familiar with frutiger aero music playlists on youtube, I can give you a cool backstory on the "Lease" song by takeshi abo. It comes from a pretty obscure visual novel for the ps2 that sold decently in Japan. One of the characters of the game is a robot maid whose theme in the game became popular because it gives frutiger aero vibes. The sequel, my merry maybe, has a remake of the theme and is actually a pretty interesting story on its own. I can elaborate if anyone is interested.

25:13 i'm actually quite pleased to see Meteos get some mention here, since that game series is a goldmine of lost media and lost information.
though, the main game series hasn't seen any releases since 2008's Meteos Wars. with the last known spinoff game for the series was 2013's Meteos for Kakao. which is... also lost media... since only one singular footage of gameplay exists, and a handful of screenshots taken from the game.
there is also Meteos Mobile, which was only released on Japanese mobile phone's. but much like Meteos Online, it was discontinued and barely any footage or gameplay of it exists anywhere. only just screenshots...

And I had friends that had no clue what I was talking about and just thought I was just seeing it everywhere because I was looking for it😂. I remember arguing with one of them once saying why the hell does everything try to look like its covered in sprite and in sprite colors?

Spore was a much different game in its alpha/beta stages - being more realistic, having more stages like an aquatic stage, etc. I never followed Spore's development, but I understand why those who did were disappointed by the final product. YTer SewerReviewer made a lost media vid on Spore's cut content months ago.

Were there ever any 3DSs that had a blue circle pad like is shown at 16:59? I've seen (what I believe are) renders on online store pages, but never one in real life. All circle pads on all colors and variants of 3DS consoles are gray without exception so I wonder what the deal is.

I know you asked this question 5 months ago, but the physical prototype shown at E3 2010 did have the matching circle pad. Wikipedia has a photo of it! Considering that there were playable demos at that E3, it's likely an operable one existed at one point, but good luck actually finding one now.

@@kathrynredmond5294 You're right! The 3DSs at E3 all had circle pads that matched the console's color! It's hard to see in most videos because people's thumbs cover them but I didn't see a single gray analog stick. IGN has a hands-on video with Fran Mirabella III that shows off a black 3DS very clearly.
I wonder why Nintendo changed the design at the last minute. And I wonder where all these colorful consoles went afterward 🤔

@@guy-sl3kr Could be anything from cost to supplier availability to durability to performance to it not being satisfying to use during extensive play testing. Looks like ones thumb would slide right off it in more intensive games.

For me Frutiger Aero started with gen 6 consoles and ended with gen 7. Dreamcast definitely helped kick off the start of it and it kinda ended with the Wii, XB360, and PS3.

the goodnight show🥺🥺🥺man... i had no idea that any of it was lost media. I watched it just about every night. i remember segments where they would do sand drawing and another one where they showed that you could color a page rainbow, draw over all of it wirh black crayon, and then use a coin or fingernail to scratch off the top layer to make a pretty rainbow picture. I'd love to see a full video about the subject
it seems that aesthetics like this are so popular because they are nostalgic. It makes me wonder: is that a good sign because we are connecting with are childhoods in a positive way? or is it a bad sign because we dont want to live in our current reality and we want to go back to being a child forever? for those of us with somewhat rocky childhoods, its sad to realize that so many of our positive childhood memories came from TV, the internet, and video games, rather than school, family, physical activity, and friends
