2:23 EMG 81 4:37 EMG ALX with boost Not a world of difference between the two...can see way Alexi would use a passive and leave the boost on, at least gives you the option to have a passive/less gainy/dynamic sound (3:56) if you don't want the active thing all the time. With the EMG-81, you get the preamp at all times whether you want it or not. Plus the ABQ gives you more control over the sound...wonder if you can still buy it separately.
Hello Emrah. I read your comment before listening and its interesting how the word brighter can be used. It makes us think better but in this case..I'm not sure about that. I think it sounded thinner and tinny. The 81 had the razor sharpness that we've come to expect with the active 81, the ALX sounded like what we've come to expect from passives. But I must say, this is an excellent pickup, the ALX
@@metaldreams3595 Hello Steven, I agree with your comment. I said brighter yes. Alexis sound has more less bass. So it sounds more distinct to me. I use the word brighter for this purpose. I like ALX than 81
@@ericvalverderosado2046 If you had two jacks like John Petrucci who uses a pair of packs live; I guess they don’t make stereo wireless systems for guitar, but two cables would suck even more unless they were together like some cables are until you pull them apart.
I almost want to get an Alexi 600 and put a Seymour Duncan in it, really like these sounds, but I need clean tones and ambient reverb and delay based playing
I was one of the first people to own one on my ESP ALX 600. And trust me when I tell you this pick up is meant for drop C tuning and lower, and nothing other than a Marshall. That's how it was built.
The 81 with the boost on sounds like it's just choking overall, no headroom left. The ALX pickup sounds overall better, with and without the ALX boost, but the dB booster just sounds awful. The ALX boost definitely the superior boost here.
Personal opinion:EMG 81 with boost is heavily oversaturated or even overmodulated or I don't know how to call it :) just too much, screws up the sound, like a speaker going bad. 81 by itself sounds fine as ever. EMG HZ ALX without boost: not my thing. With the supplied boost: impressed... very close to the emg 81, depending on the notes sometimes surpassing it, sometimes equalising it, sometimes just below.... it's a matter of taste and of course the rest of your settings/setup. I think the EMG hz ALX is a very cool pick-up, I have one RR24m (maple) and one limited edition RR24 (ebony) and I won't be changing my 81's for these anytime soon, difference seems too small... but if I'd have a stock jackson "designed seymore duncan" or something like that I most certainly wouldn't hessitate. (opinion is sometimes just a summing up of a personal taste, please feel free to disagree).
I just ordered the f alx alexi laiho and some scholar locking tuners for my fake Japanese purple alexi laiho guitar it looks amazing and plays good right out of the box it just looks sick and only 290 bucks compared to esp 1800 dollars version I'm happy with it this pickup should make it way better 😀
So in my ears, the sustain lasts longer. Please kindly tell me the reason netizen, why bother buying an active pickup if we have a compressor/sustainer pedal? Are there any other beneficial features? I kinda wanted to buy an EMG active for my guitar.
I’m used to the emg hz, I’ve played the active ones, its cool but it does have a sound of course! But it’s better than the active stuff, i try n stay away from emg now. Not that they are bad, but I’m trying to sound different, i may say ,the sound that great, but those pickups are like a boost and compression on a small dial. Ive tried to dial it out but, still its a comp sound! Cool stuff! but not for me anymore, loved them. But... i like picking hard and that it shows! Still love this pickup, but not my sound. Still cool tho. Just try it.
Nice video and play. One question: Can i use a passive dimarzio or seymour duncan on neck position with EMG Alx on bridge using the same Alx pot EQ/Boost?
Hey mate sounds fantastic. Active pickups tend to just die when the battery goes and I prefer to keep it simple with passives. Just wondering if it's possible to forgo the battery and treat it as if it were passive. Cheers.
Thanks man, I've always thought of it as a harmonic minor scale. Uses the notes of a minor bar chord off the A string. I learnt it from Mark Morton's solos off sacrament.
What? Kerry King's EMG in the ALX V-600 guitar? Is it just your guitar that was modified by somebody else before you bought it or is it really how they're built at the factory and people have to buy the AXL pickup separately? Those guitars are more than $1,000 here in Canada. You'd expect to have the Laiho signature pickup from the start. WTF?
Juicexlx He modified that. The 200's have an ESP produced pickup while the 600's and up have an EMG H2 (essentially the same thing as Alexi's signature pickup minus the boost) according to the website.
I have an alexi-600 scythe; is the Laiho pickup going to be better than the one it came with? Will the notes be more distinct and less muddled? Is getting the Laiho pickup worth it? Ty.
If you always open the volume to maximum by no digit on your vouume, you'll find not the EMG's dynamic range on volume. And that you'll think the EMG pickups can play only the metal, but can not play the nice song. That's you can not control it dynamic.
@Lambchopper678 I want to install the alx pickup with gain boost on my jackson v but it has 2 pickups. Can I just disconnect the neck pickup and leave it in? Do you happen to know if I will have an issue putting this in on a jackson vs esp?
Don't understand something: boost is toggled with the push-pull system (so can be set in any guitar "as is"). But in the box I see a toggle switch: what is it for? Plus: you show a demo with 2 kind of boost (one from a toggle switch meaning need to make a hole on guitars body...). I have all EMG 81 on my guitars. I don't want to loose in gain (I already like it) but thinking of going to ALX since sound is different and EQ boost can make it more unique. If toggle switch is needed to get all boosts (I want max boost from ALX), this is really annoying.
I wouldn’t recommend the ALX set. You don’t need a toggle switch. That’s something I had as a dB boost for the 81 like Kerry King has. The ALX set comes with the push/pull knob. To be honest I much prefer the sound of an 81. The Alexi was really thin through my amps. It’s a good idea but sounds rubbish
