- A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shares technical details on Toyota's New 4 cylinder Turbo engine that's replacing the V6 engine on the 2023 Toyota Highlander.
So Toyota Drops v6 Going 4 Cylinder Turbo? Sounds like Toyota is joining the Turbo crowds.
In this video we'll take a closer look at the 4 cylinder Turbo engine the T24A-FTS which actually debuted in the 2022 Lexus NX350.
This new engine is very similar to the A25A engine which is a very popular 4 cylinder engine that Toyota has been using since 2018 in many models across the Toyota and Lexus Lineup.
We'll focus in this video on the differences between the new engine and the A25A and towards the end of the video I'll share my personal opinion on this change.

My 2003 Toyota 4Runner V6 is still running like when it was brand new. It’s currently at 285K miles. I’ll be keeping it for probably another 10 years.

That a wonderful V6 engine with a very long lifetime. If I were buying a Highlander, I’d just buy one of the latest models with the 3.5. I’m allergic to turbos. 🤧

I wish I lived close enough for him to service my Highlander. Alas, it would be a two-day one-way drive to get to him.
Still would prefer the v6. It has such a good track record.
Let's not count this engine out just yet. Different doesn't mean worse. Considering Toyota takes their time on things, this turbo engine shouldn't be a flop.
If it is, they'll figure it out after loads of warranty work and solve the issues.

Your 100% right. Plus it’s a statistical fact that turbocharged cars don’t last nearly as long as non turbocharged cars, plus have much more problems. It even happened to Honda. Sad to see this happening.
Port injection V6 engines have so many fewer failure points than a turbo anything, and that's before you consider extra maintenance that direct injection requires and that many owners can barely maintain the car properly

I just drove from Detroit to Chicago with my v6 highlander. It was so smooth and lovely and surprisingly fuel efficient! I got 25mpg carrying my family, our luggage, and going 80mph through most of the trip. I’ve had a turbo engine before, and I can honestly say I don’t want that shit.
I think old turbos have the problem that every exhaust gas has to go through the turbo and it's reduced aperture compared to NA. They could design a better system but who knows if they will, Batteries are taking all the love
If you drove a Highlander four-cylinder turbo, you have a totally different opinion. I just bought one and it’s almost as fast as my Lexus V8.

@@Carlos-ps7hb that the turbo engine does nothing special. Decreased reliability with minimal power gains and no mpg gains and increased labor costs
I had a lexus nx which is a turbo 2.0. While the car acceleration was good and fun for city driving, it felt underpowered when driving interstates highways at 80 mph. I needed to constantly floor it and it felt like it was struggling at high speeds. With my v6 highlander full of my family and luggage the car drives buttery smooth and never lacks any power even going near 100 mph. Most likely I will remain with this car for as long as it could. New cars with their 4 cyl don't entice me.

I'm still not happy about all the turbos. It looks like I'll be keeping my V6 2012 RAV4 a lot longer than I had planned. Thankfully my RAV is, by far, the best and most reliable car I have ever owned.
I love my 2019 RAV4 with the 2.5 gas engine, especially the 40+ mpg it gets.
I have 2020 non hybrid rav 39 mpg it’s incredible!

I've been driving a Toyota with a 4 cylinder 1.4Ltr Engine with a Turbo for the last 5 years. Mine as done over 115,000 Miles and apart from Bulbs I've never had a problem. 😉👍Hopefully it will last for another 100K Miles at least.
I want to get a 2024 New series Tacoma, I do not think that Tacoma is gonna have the V6s any more .

I think you hit it on the head perfectly. So many people HATE turbo charged engines. I personally, love them - turbos simply take advantage of wasted energy. Personally, I wish all stock vehicles were turbo-charged. So many people hate them because of the breakdowns and expense associated with them. But much of that is due to improper maintenance and abuse. If you aren’t stomping on the accelerator (keeping the engine out of high-boost,) if you’re giving the turbo(s) a minute to cool down before you shut the engine down, and if they turbo/engine has been engineered by a quality company like Toyota, I think your vehicle can be nearly as reliable and a great investment. Just my unpopular opinion

We just jumped in and bought a 2022 Highlander while we could still get one with the 3.5 L 6 cylinder. We love it’s performance and it’s long history of reliability. We plan to tow with this vehicle and we didn’t want risk those kinds of high loads on an newly designed drive train.
You did good 'm driving a 4 cyl turbo coupe and hate it every day. Can't imagine how horrible it would be to do that in a large three row crossover

@third pregnancy mom I just got my 4 cylinder turbo Highlander two days ago… it’s seems to have plenty of acceleration and quite unless you really step on the gas. At 70 MPH the tachometer indicates 2000 rpm. It’s my first Toyota so my finger and toes are crossed!! Lol
V4 will be dead under load.

Noobs below saying don't buy a turbo Toyota engine if you want it to "last".
Toyota has massive experience with turbo 4 cylinder engines.
The famous 3SGT-E 2.0 litre 4cylinder engine will do 300, 000 kms without any bottom or top end attention even when driven hard as long as you give them an oil change every 5K-6000kms.
The brilliant MR2 turbo of the 1990s are tough as nails featuring this engine.
So noobs...hush up and learn about engineering in the real world before you spout off.

I will be sticking to Toyota's made between 2015-2019 for as long as possible I think. Seems to be a global "race to the bottom" for quality, with huge price hikes to boot.
If I had to buy a new engine/trans and frame for our Land Cruiser it'd still be worth holding onto for another 350K+ miles, as you couldn't replace the entire vehicle for less than the sum of it's parts.

I'm glad I bought one of the last Avalons recently. I really wanted the V6, and I'm glad I have it. It's pretty much last chance to get one at this point. It took my dealer over three months to get another Avalon after they sold me mine.
Apparently, Toyota does not produce any other V6 sedans besides the (rare) Avalon, the Camry TRD, and Lexus models. Out of curiosity, I did a nationwide search for Camry XLE V6 and there are none. Zero, zip, nada. So don't expect to get one next year, even if the brochures may have it. With the Avalon discontinued, that's pretty much the end of V6 sedans for Toyota.

Same here with me! I found a perfect pearl white 2017 Lexus ES350 and LOVE that 3.5 V6 power, smoothness, and reliability!
My daughter purchased a 2016 Avalon limited in 2019 from Car Max 27,000 miles the ride is so smooth a lot of legroom.
Every Toyota I've owned in over 20 years has been a normally aspirated V6, and they're all still running great with zero issues. But every smaller displacement 4-cylinder turbo engine that I've come across hasn't been as satisfactory. I'm keeping my V6s

Great content bud, love your insight and honest love the accent you have also, my greatest “hurt” to all this about 2023 and every manufacturer is that the days of purchasing a vehicle and hopefully driving it to payoff and beyond are going to be tough. Especially for the home type mechanics. I hope the industry proves me wrong! I do… Also it’s going to be very interesting to see the “usual” difference between USA made and Japan made vehicles. I promise you you’ll see a stark difference as time goes on. I wrote Service for 18 years for Honda/Acura. Mostly for Acura when they started to transition to USA made vehicles. The Integra, NSX, RL…. And USA made TLs had unbelievably different numbers in warranty repairs when compared to the truly Japan assembled imported cars. Man it was crazy!
I love the engineering challenges the tightening of the parameters has created, but Toyotas middle finger to the US has been threefold! The Supra being a frikken BMW, Tundra dropping the V8, lastly and greatest disappointment in the Toyota world is the Land Cruiser 300 series dropping the tailgate! Now it seems this is the 4th “middle finger” from Toyota! Good grief!

AMD, I love the new shop! Great job. While I'm not a big fan of the 4-cyl turbo, if the new engine can produce enough low-end torque for easy acceleration it will prove worthwhile.
I highly doubt the new engine will come close in reliability to the V6

Smaller engines does NOT mean better mileage, biggest lie people fall for
Addition of pressure in the engine. It will not last as long as. Turbochargers will blow or seize, who knows how the bearings will hold up over time
I did but then the tundra 3.5TT happened. Lots of wastegate issues and it’s still yet to be seen what happens once that odo passes 100k

Sad to see the end of the V6 era, but toyota has to keep with regulations and the times.
With enough advancements, hope they can make a turbo engine that is just as or at least almost as reliable as the outgoing V6.

nothing will beat a v6 smooth power delievery except for inline 6 and v8 engines

I was thinking the same. That I will be hanging on to my 2021 V6 limited. It was perfect vehicle. However, I was rear-ended, and my beauty was considered as total. Now I'm lost on what to choose now
That wastegate design sounds almost exactly like my 1980 Turbo Trans AM was. Very effective at reducing turbo wear and very little delay going from vacuum to boost when needed.
1970 to 1973 455 and 455 HO, 455 SD, if you can find one, all of these dust all models of the 2nd generation T/A.😁

I’m a proud owner of a mint 2010 Avalon XLS . I bought it over three years ago with 35K miles . It now has 78K miles and runs beautifully. I’m keeping this thing forever ! These new cars suck!

Hi! It could very well have different tuning. But as it sits it’s actually capable of pulling a 4runner or tacoma very well. It makes a lot of torque

One of the best and most enjoyable channels on RUclips. Even if I didn't own a bunch of Toyotas, I would watch AMD. There is a lot of information that can be extrapolated to other types of cars and engines from his videos. If you just like cars, or mechanical stuff, or are a proponent for another Brand, you can learn from AMD's videos. The 4Runner series, including the in-depth history and analysis on the 1GR-FE is the "gold standard."

Hi AMD, working on CAT diesel engines in the late 90’s we had this technology for inter coolers called SCAC (Separate circuit after cooler). Can’t believe it’s taken over 20 years for passenger vehicles to catch up

@@gutadin5 Diesel's run hotter but also less prone to overheating, gas engines are kinda fragile and need to be "broken in" and not just setup for race day to perform their best.
Great vid as always, and that balance shaft tidbit hit the spot. I took my 2013 Taco 2.7 4 cylinder 2TR-FE racing, and 100 kms into the race, the balance shaft broke. Deleting that was the first thing I did, and interestingly, did not notice much of a vibration after removing it but a pretty noticeable nippyness at the pedal. It pulls a bit stronger in 3rd and 4th. Lots of people suggest this mod with many caveats, so if I do end up swapping the T24A-FTS into my 2nd gen, I will remove that balance shaft for sure. Just some learnings.

I’m sure glad I have my current gen 4Runner…yes it isn’t particularly fuel efficient and the power train design is ancient, but in the long run I’ll stick with reliability and lower maintenance requirements over a highly stressed 4 cyl turbo an 8 to 10 speed modern transmission that gets better fuel economy and accelerates faster, but is likely not going to be as reliable or durable.
AMD, like Kirk said, love the new shop! I assume you are no longer working for a Toyota Dealer? If so, how do you stay up to date on new cars as they come out?

Mom and dad just bought one of these. Other than the sound you can't really tell it's not a V6. Tons of torque that the 8sp keeps in the right spot. It's actually very nice.

I'm not anywhere near being in the market for a new car (2016 Prius with 23K miles), but I would definitely trust a Toyota turbo engine. When I was younger, my dad had a Saab 900 turbo for about 10 years. If you take care of a turbo engine, you can do very well with it.

you proved a point of immense contrast, the Swedes did things that nobody else would. So it is theoretically possible to build fairly reliable gasoline turbo but you will never see the technology that Swedes used because their values are so different and they are so smart. The best engineers are investing time in electric today not petrol cars also

How is it? I’m getting my xle grand in August.
I recently purchased the 2022 Highlander Hybrid Platinum. The electric motor combined with the 4 cylinder engine puts out amazing torque from the start and gets it down the road admirably on the highway. I’ve been getting 35-37 mpg in town and 35mpg on the highway. The car is very comfortable and quiet. Some complain that the 4 cylinder with the hybrid system is noisy at full throttle. Our car isn’t. Maybe because the Platinum package has the acoustic glass and side or door panels. I’m extremely pleased with this SUV. The turbo 4 cylinder will have to prove itself. I’ve owned vehicles with small displacement 4 cylinder turbo engines. That turbo has to be running all the time for normal everyday driving, especially with Highlander’s weight of 4,450 lbs. Cheers for Toyota if the turbo 4’s have good reliability.
Sounds like the new turbo 4 cylinder would be very reliable, really considering the 2023 RX model next year.

I am glad my Tacoma has the 3.5L V6. I have a feeling this engine will be replacing it in the 4th Gen in a year or two.

@@davidaix5771 The 4Runner is still using the old 4.0L V6. The 2nd Gen Tacoma was using that engine. My guess is the next Gen 4Runner and Tacoma will use the same engines.

@@johnw4067 They both were 4.0 V6's, however the 4Runners V6 was entirely different than the Tacoma 4.0 l V6.. read up on it and you will see. The 4runner had dual VVTI and the Tacoma did not. THE FORERUNNERS 4 L WAS A TOUGHER ENGINE.
Back in 2000, I purchased a tundra sr5 with a 6 cylinder, 5vz-3.4 liter. This engine is very dependable. I’m still driving this tundra after 22 years and expect it to give me many more years of service. Turbos are not as dependable, IMO.

If you know of mechanics of your caliber in my area, please, please do let me know! D4S is a blessing that should help alleviate some of the turbo induced problems. I am also glad API finalized the ILSAC GL-6 oil standard in 2019 which should also make a difference - true synthetic oil for a change.
Again, another awesome video by AMD. If this engine was built for a turbo from the beginning,I would have more trust in it. As we see here, it is not. That tells me the crank, bearings and rest of engine originally is not designed for the added stress and power placed on it now…

Ahmed. I love that you are addressing this and explaining how it works. I did read for now the Camry is keeping the V6 for 2023. I think the Gen 9 will use the turbo 4.
Yes, but it will become a crossover. The sedan is dead. There is a large gap between the Venza and Highlander.
"Keeping" as in "it will be in the brochure," yes, maybe, but you won't actually be able to get one. Even now, the only V6 Camry that's actually available is the TRD. I have not seen a Camry XLE V6 for months. Literally zero nationwide as far as I can tell.
I don’t see Camry becoming a crossover. Despite sedan sales down, Toyota still manages to sell a good amount of Camrys and Corollas. Toyota believes there is still a market for sedans and they will continue to make them.
The Camry will get the T24A engine when it gets a full redesign probably for MY 2024.
@@worldlinerai I doubt sedans survive. There is no business case for them. They are pretty much universally hated by the public. They are an anachronism from a bygone era.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q I don’t hate sedans. I just purchased 2 sedans for my household. A 2022 V6 Toyota Avalon Limited and a 2022 Lexus ES350 Ultra Luxury. I don’t care for the new Toyota 4 cylinder turbo engine. There will be lots of problems with this 4 cylinder turbo engine.

The wife and I just picked up a 2023 with the turbo 4 last march.
Mpg is great on the highway particularly. Honestly power delivery is great and it packs a real punch when you kick it into sport mode. I’ve been doing my own 5k oil changes with synthetic oil to make sure we mitigate any future oil related issues. Easy to service spin on filter. I honestly wonder why they haven’t used this engine on a sport version of the Camry. I think it would really suit it, especially if tuned for a little more top end horsepower and less torque.
All around great car and hoping I can get a long life out of it!!!

I used to drive so many cars in my company rental fleet. Turbo 4s I don’t care who makes it, the refinement doesn’t even come close. I’d step into a new Avalon or Highlander and the smoothness, power delivery, and predicted reliability will never match the V6.
And there goes the longevity.
It's a Toyota not a Dodge so it will have the reliability.

Happy I picked up a 2021 XSE with the six. The subscription, money grab for the fob and the TPMS charge per service are the only drawbacks so far.
I heard the fob remote start is free for 10 years.
Also tpms charge per service? Your tpms sensors shouldn’t be failing already

Thanks for the replies. I'm in Canada so the rules are different for the fob.
For the TPMS, previous years used to store the information on 2 different set of wheels and tires, no matter where they were positioned on the vehicle. Now, even after a rotation of the wheels, my vehicle loses the settings and the computer must be reprogrammed.
Gone are the days of the computer storing this info for 2 sets, let alone, 1 set of wheels. My dealer charges an additional fee to reprogram them, on top of the service program I purchases with the vehicle. The service covers the rotation but not the reprogramming.

I don't mind a 4 cylinder from Toyota, they are rock solid. I had a 91 Camry with the 3S-FE. That thing was a powerhouse of reliability. I delivered pizza with that car. It was such an easy car for delivery, especially because of it's fuel efficiency. I will miss the V-6 though. I currently have two cars with 1MZ-FE's in them, and love their performance.
One thing a 4 cylinder and the other is adding a turbo...
Don't mind the V4 it's the Turbo I'm concerned with.
4 banger Toyota engines (esp GT Engines) are legendary. Like the 19R

I am glad to have found a near perfect 2017 Lexus ES350 with only 25k miles! I will keep that V6 baby for many years to come! I think the interior is also much nicer than the 2019 and on versions.
just got a 2018 ES350 with 18K miles here in Florida .car looks new . maybe i will outlive the car. Last of the 6 speed trans
I find it interesting that the Corolla, Camry, RAV4, and newer Toyota Hybrids are the only few vehicle models to receive Naturally Aspirated Dynamic Force engines, and they both get very good fuel economy. I wonder why Toyota wouldn't put this technology into their other larger displacement engines, without having to go the turbocharger route
