Thank you very much for this video!!!! My 1988 Chevy S10 Blazer has this same problem and it has started to get worse. You have went step by step and taught everyone how to fix this, and we all appreciate it!
This repair video applies TOTALLY to 1991 buick lesabre models. Speaking of which it just made my freaking day. Spent hours on that bastard last night and now I'm going to take a trip to the Autozone to get the tools. Thank you so much.
Just want to say this was a very good description on how to remove it I've done so many of these it's been over 15 years and I had to refresh my memory but this guy very very good
this is the only video I could find that would tell/show me how to replace the multiswitch and the key assembly (mine turns without a key typical GMC) for my 1994 GMC Sierra they all done 1995 and later. Thank you ScottysDetailing
I have a 90 Chevy G20, and over the last few months it's gotten much worse. I found a few step-by-steps on the web, but your video is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
ty for actually showing the last part that i needed every other video cut off right before showing. You just helped me get my 79 el camino back on the road
My trucks steering column bolts came out compleetly while I was driving on the freeway, some scary stuff, But thanks for posting this vidio, couldnt have fixed it without it!!!!
So far you're doing a good job.I just did mine few minutes ago and the tool, I finally found one at the Tool Center and it cost me $10.00. The only critic I got for you is: You didn't make a clear breakdown in your video of the disassembling and reassembling. I watched the guy with the S-10 steering and he did a good job but you got the better and right tools for the job. Thanks!!
Even though my son has a few years left to go before he can drive, he spent his hard saved money on an "85 Suburban 4x4 . lt's as ugly as sin, with faded green paint and lots of surface rust (no perforation though) and in need of a number of repairs, this being one of them . But, its got great potential as a bush and mud truck, as the motor is strong, it has a 6'' lift, locking hubs, and a few other off-road goodies . We will be whipping it back in mechanical shape, so thanks for the videos .
Dude, you saved me a bunch of time and money... I reviewed about 10 peoples videos and you were the only one to mention the two screws on that hold the lock plate in...as a matter of fact, most of the other trucks didn't have that lock plate... I was about to quit, my steering wheel was on the floor and I was heading in to call one of those mobile mechanics... Thanks again
I guess 55 people were mad that the hardest part of this job was glossed over he didn't show how to take off a C clip without stabbing a pick through you hand I don't work on cars everyday I rented the steering wheel puller and the C clip took 2 hrs. to get out with said stab!
@@AnonYmous-gw5it wait till you take those pivot pens out using his method. You will be using taps buying several of those special pivot pen tools and taps till you realize you need to use 2 wrenches at the same time one to hold the tool and the other to turn the bolt. This was a real important part that was poorly shown and skipped. I'm assuming most people leaving good comments are people that are either familure with the process and done this job before or only replaced the key cylinder switch. Otherwise your gonna break the end of the pivot tool off in the pivot pens. Don't believe try using 1 wrench to turn just the bolt as the op does on the video.
thanx man. I just put in a replacement column from a yard because my truck was stolen a few months ago. I do the whole job, put the wheel on and it wobbles so bad I m scared to drive it. I thought I had bought a bad column, but your video means I can do this in the morning since I had already disassembled much to replace the lock cylinder. Wish I did this when it was out of the car though
This video helped me a lot!!! Gets my head in th e zone that it a pretty big job and needs the right set of tools. Well done. Sure there is some detail missing but the guts are all there. You started in the light and ended in the dark and that helps me size the job.
Saved myself about $250 or more replacing the ignition lock set myself. Part cost me less than $15 at Advanced Auto Parts. Could have borrowed the tools but wanted to do it right away so went to Harbor Freight. They sell a kit for $35 with the wheel puller AND the snap ring depressor as he calls it. I think its called something else. But kit has both tools. Thanks dude, good video.
Great video, I'm doing my 1990 ZR-1 and it has about 3000 wires that VATS ain't no joke, putting it back together now, it's a beast, nice video., thanks 👍👍
holy crap.. this video helped so much. my dad and I got the casing off but didnt kow if we had to pull the pins on the side. ive got a 91 GMC Sierra SLE. its been a good truck for me. n i hope to keep it longer with this helpful video.. thanks
THanks for giving me an idea on what is wrong with my 91 chevy 1500. The dang colum was so loose it came up and the coupler was out of place, and I couldnt turn, and stopped traffic at a major intersection. I quick slapped it back together, but not before pinching my little finger between the parts. A loose column can be quite the scary and dangerous propblem. Thanks again for your vid.
i have an '88 Jeep Cherokee that i have to do this to, took it to a shop to get aligned after i did a lift kit, when i got home the column was a little loose, then about a month later it became extremely loose, I'm not sure if it backed those bolts off, or if they broke something using the column to swing themselves into the cab, thanks for the video, it gives me an idea of what to expect
The kit I rented at O'riley's head both the wheel puller and the other tool was called a snap ring retainer. I believe the two pins are called key pins. I had to make a homemade puller for the two pins with a wood block in clawback hammer. No idea what the name of the tool would be. But if you cant get the two pins out you still will be able to access two of the bolts without pulling the pins. That alone will tighten the wheel worst comes to worst.good luck with it man.
Hey Scotty, thanks a million for doing this video. I have the exact same problem on my 91 Suburban -- with the loose tilt-steering mechanism. I pulled the steering wheel to see what the issue was and got stuck at the lock plate. That's when I turned to RUclips and found your video. You've definitely saved me a ton of hassle. Knowing the tools I need, the order of disassembly, and the little tricks -- like adding slack to the wiring bundle -- is going to make this job a total snap. Thanks again!
By the way, my son already named his truck . Having seen some other mud-bog trucks, and one in particular called "Swamp Thing", he decided to name his truck "Pond Scum". Looking at the truck, l think the name is quite fitting . Thanks again .
Thanks for making such a helpful video. Just what some of us need ..a step by step how to.. My column on my 91 really wobbles...bad..I'll bet it's broke inside..Maybe i will look into swapping out the column..it's just my plow truck so i can chip away at it..Thanks again for this video.
rented a puller kit for $60. fixed it just like the vidio shows.returned the kit and the fix costed $0 in the end.thank you.it turned back years of slop in the wheel.now it feels tight and smooth again.any tips on woman that work this good?
So I have a 91 sonoma and mechanics say my steering knuckle needs to be tighten or fixed to stop the little bit of play in the steering from right to left when truck is not moving. Also my steering is loose as you just showed thanks for the video . Seems like a long and strenuous task.
I have the steering column from my "new" (to me) '89 K1500 Chevy in my basement, ready to rebuild. This is just what I have been looking for to spell out the repair procedure step-by-step. Gotta get one of those pin pullers and then I'm gonna tackle it! Thanks for posting this video!
Very good, very helpful video... I had what looked like the same simptonms on my 92 gmc steering wheel except I used the steering wheel to get into the truck and it broke the piece, that holds the plate, that the four bolts attach to and had to remove the ENTIRE steering column and weld it back together. SO 1) DON'T USE YOUR STEERING WHEEL TO GET IN AND OUT OF YOUR TRUCK 2) if you are having this problem it might not be as easy a fix :-(
We have a '90 Caravan with the same Saginaw. The steering wheel flopped around quite s bit. Took it down to the 4 bolts. The bolts were loose, we used Locktite and after tightening them down the shaft still had some noticeable play before complete reassembly. is that normal? what else could be worn out ? Bearings, rag joint?
Thanks so much for this, I have had the "death rattle" on my 91 GMC Sierra steering wheel for several years. I think all the saginaws had this problem with the bolts getting loose. I bought the needed tools for the job a few months ago, but have been waiting until I saw a video so I could see exactly how it was done. Now I can finally do it, Thanks Again!
The retaining tool I used a piece of pipe the size of the retainer with 2 groves 1/4 " groves filed in to the end. Since I couldn't find new bearings for the 1974 tilt and since they are no longer made I used bearings out of the rear wheel of my kids old bike. It's been 38 years and Government Motors still hasn't cured the tilt coming lose.I have never owned a Ford but I think it's time I do.
Hey whats the tool to remove the spring loaded thing to take of the little ring the tool with the green piece that goes on the end of the thing that holds your steering wheel whats that called.. Im trying to get my 1977 nova legal and the turn signal switch is broken and i need to get that spring loaded plate off.. But whats the tool your using at 1:50?
GREAT presentation having same problem. was wondering where i can get the small puller for the side pins on the pivot head. does it come in the puller kit?. thanks for any help.....
Great video scotty I just took everything off and put loctite on those bolts now trying to put it back together but there's a hook on by the tilt and signal lever that I don't know what the heck..any words of wisdom everyone feedback is appriciated
Excellent video, except I can't remove the upper housing from the lower housing to tighten up the four bolts. I've tried everything I can but it doesn't want to come apart. Any suggestions ?
Someone tried to break into my truck. well they did but They couldnt take it. They messed up the wires ignition switch everything😱 Redruby wouldn't make a sound totally unresponsive took her to a mechanic he is charging me $250.00😞 I don't know if its a fair price... ???? I need her in my life😘 she is a beast👻 literally like a rock. Thanks for the video.

I have an 88 model cheyenne and I am going through an issue right now. I recently had put my steering upside down. Could I have over torqued something within the column that will force me to find that sweet spot in order for the truck to crank? I always have to turn the wheel left or right for the ignition to work. I do know that the switch was recently replaced. The last time I had gone inside the column, I did not put the buzzer piece in correctly and also the wheel does not lock..Thanks
U know what that hook is supposed to activate my hi-beams with the signal lever but since my truck is an 81 and this column is from a 93 I figured wouldn't use it....so took it off and now I put it all together....it came on pretty good and all is tight now....I can pat myself in the back for not freaking out...LOL...the pin removing tool very much needed.....
scotty, round 7:25 when youre removing the 2 pins from each side, what is that little tool that youre using with the half circle??? cant find it anywhere and cant figure out how to take them out :(
looks like this solved the play in the tilt, but what about the play in the steering? I've replaced my steering box, idler arm, pitman arm, and tie rods, and still have about a half inch of play in the steering wheel
once you remove the (3) t30 screws, does the wiper/high beam control come off, or do I have to dig deeper to unplug the wires for it, because I want to replace mine
I have a similar problem on my 88 Chevy, but only the top part is loose. It got that way after a ignition switch replacement, now just the steering wheel has play in it. The tilt works fine, I can see the bearing under the pressure spring, any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Excuse me, but I have a 75 Chevy Nova and I'm having alot of trouble finding parts for the steering column. Do you have any idea where i might be able to find an upper bearing for it? Thank you very much.
A proper thread/pitch screw (machine screw), flat washer, and a shallow 3/8 drive socket - larger than the head of the pivot pin) will do the same, without a trip to the auto parts store. Insert the screw through the washer, then the socket, and thread it into the pin. As you tighten the screw, it will pull the pin into the socket.
My plastic coupler where the shaft pivots is loose, it came out easy as I was taking out bolts to add lock tight. Your coupler didn't look loose. It's tough to get the coupler back together and back on the column. Any ideas? Thanks
mine on my 91 firebird is the same way my column isn't loose or anything like that but I can grab the steering wheel an tilt it down to the left. my tilt still works fine it's just when applied pressure to the steering wheel it's self, the column can move down to the left.
@ScottysDetailing thats what you dealers all say GO FIND ONE AT A JUNK yard haven't you ever thought after several years up to 40 years IT STOPS EXISTING i have been getting this all weak cause my steering column ignition died. everything else works except my ignition 75 ranchero might i remind you... but i am fixing my own ignition system and kill switch in the dash.
The kit you rented. It had everything including the pin puller tool that he used on the sides? I live in the middle of no place. Im sure its not going to be easy to get the tools. Maybe someone can help me by listing the correct names for the tools. I have a steering wheel puller so im just looking for the correct names for the other puller type tools. Thanks.
So I got to the part where you removed the two Torx bits after you use the c clip tool and the circle cover thing came out but not the center piece. What went wrong?
In your video the center came out with the lock ring assembly. My center piece stayed , it's pretty solid in there like not budging other than it turning to the right.
hey man.good advice. thnx. question. i noticed at the end of your video.. you have an astrovan.i just got a 95' astro...any idea on how to lift the front a couple inches?
@matthewgleason I'm having the same problem with my '85 Corvette. The last guy took apart the steering column, lost a bunch of parts, then up and died. So here I am trying to find an upper bearing as well. Your best bet is probably going to be taking one out of an old GM car from a junkyard. Fortunately for us consumers, GM standardized steering columns on almost all of their vehicles.
Are you able to do the same to a 2001 camaro z28 i have a similar problem can't say for sure if it is the exact same. My steering wheel moves down and to the right and i can't get a proper alignment from what the people told me. Any help would be great.
my 1991 sierra has a connector shaped like a key on a big black wire that came unplugged , apparently the horn ground, and I don't know how or where it plugs into. Anyone know where it goes? thanks for your videos
I have an 85 GMC that rod for the ignition switch has fell out of the top part off the steering column can I fix it go in threw the top like that? any suggestions I am stuck
1:50 it's called a lock plate compressor kit. Like everything else, you can find it on Amazon. Works great. It has all the special tools in it to do the job on my 1989 Chevy 4x4, which appears to share all significant components. www.amazon.com/OTC-7927A-Steering-Remover-Compressor/dp/B000XSCEMQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1425920213&sr=1-1&keywords=OTC+%287927A%29+Steering+Wheel+Remover%2FLock+Plate+Compressor+Set
@thirdstreettito Two of my bolts were all the way out (not in the holes) and the other two were just sitting there. I could steer but it chews up the plastic and brass parts.
Help ! I have taken this tilt column apart 2 times and reassembled. My problem is the ignition switch won't turn to start when its in park. The ignition switch was well worn so i bought a new ingition switch cylinder for $17 at O Riellys. The interlock mechanism must be out of place I can shift it with the key off and that means the locking system doesn't work correctly. Once its in drive I can rotate the ignition switch but it will not engage internally and make it start. what to do
i went the other way. my truck was stolen and i had to replace the column because they mutilated it. so I went from non tilt to a tilt column. had I known this was a big deal I would have bought 2 one tilt and one non tilt.

scotty, round 7:25 when youre removing the 2 pins from each side, what is that little tool that youre using with the half circle??? cant find it anywhere and cant figure out how to take them out :(
Okay thanks for the info. Its nice to know I can at least find out if its fixable without spending money.
looks like this solved the play in the tilt, but what about the play in the steering?
As you tighten the screw, it will pull the pin into the socket.
thanx from a texan in england with a chevy !!
Damn bro hows it holding up?
My plastic coupler where the shaft pivots is loose, it came out easy as I was taking out bolts to add lock tight. Your coupler didn't look loose. It's tough to get the coupler back together and back on the column. Any ideas? Thanks
mine on my 91 firebird is the same way my column isn't loose or anything like that but I can grab the steering wheel an tilt it down to the left. my tilt still works fine it's just when applied pressure to the steering wheel it's self, the column can move down to the left.
whats the name of the tool you used to get the pins out to remove the housing around the knuckle to access the four bolts to tighten?
I want to upgrade my steering column I got a 93 gmc sierra any ideas
Can a bad egniction switch or steering column cause a engine to not spark when cranking....
@ScottysDetailing thats what you dealers all say GO FIND ONE AT A JUNK yard haven't you ever thought after several years up to 40 years IT STOPS EXISTING i have been getting this all weak cause my steering column ignition died. everything else works except my ignition 75 ranchero might i remind you... but i am fixing my own ignition system and kill switch in the dash.
where yall form ? need my 88chevy astor van work on my steering wheel doing same thing like that ..need get it fixed
Thanks for the video... it saved me some time having to think about how too...
Thank you for making this video it helped me a lot.
Thanks.
Rock solid vid bro..
would a loose steering column cause it to shift into neutral or even reverse when making a left turn?
awsome video helped me out a lot thank you
ty for this video, It help allot. I will be saving your videos.
Where did you get the pivot pin removal tool that you use at 7:10 ?
Rent from Oriley Auto Parts
Thanks.
WHAT are all the tools needed?
#1 steering wheel poller
Where did you get snap ring retainer tool? I’m looking online and can’t find it anywhere
I can't find the tool you used to remove the last two pins on either side of the column. Any idea where I can buy one?
Would it be easier to remove the whole column after disconnecting the steering shaft and trying another, "tighter" column from your local boneyard?
Do you have to disconnect the battery if all you're doing is replacing the spring that resets the turn signal?
So I got to the part where you removed the two Torx bits after you use the c clip tool and the circle cover thing came out but not the center piece. What went wrong?
In your video the center came out with the lock ring assembly. My center piece stayed , it's pretty solid in there like not budging other than it turning to the right.
hey man.good advice. thnx. question. i noticed at the end of your video.. you have an astrovan.i just got a 95' astro...any idea on how to lift the front a couple inches?
Good video man. Not many good ones out there
@matthewgleason I'm having the same problem with my '85 Corvette.
Great video!! 👍🏽👍🏽
Great narration, thank you!
1:50 it's called a lock plate compressor kit. Like everything else, you can find it on Amazon.
Works great. It has all the special tools in it to do the job on my 1989 Chevy 4x4, which appears to share all significant components.

@thirdstreettito Two of my bolts were all the way out (not in the holes) and the other two were just sitting there. I could steer but it chews up the plastic and brass parts.
Check your grounds and also the canceling cam inside the steering column. Those are things go out quite often.
