  • XREAL Beam vs Rokid Station! We've talked about the glasses, now let's chat about how you POWER those glasses. We kinda have to break this down into TWO parts. We need a computer to show us the content, but we also need a computer to produce the AR effects. Wouldn't you know it, each "brain" here tackles DIFFERENT computing needs!

    I LOVE my xreal glasses. Probably my favorite tech purchase after my Galaxy Z Fold 5. When I first put them on I was completely WOW'd and still am every time I put them on. But then I got the Beam and am definitely not impressed. I got them for the body anchor feature, which does work, but it just feels jank.
    The device and software feel like it's still in early alpha. It doesn't have that premium feel even though it does what it was advertised to do for me. It's also just awkward having to carry around these extra devices and wires to get the job done. And you still can't charge and play your media device at the same time unless you get ANOTHER 3rd party adapter thing which makes the setup even more wire spaghetti and awkward.
    I'll always recommend the glasses alone, but for $400 they should be able to do what the Beam offers without all the hassle.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 месяцев назад +5

      Techies love saying "they should do this", but the beam is a perfect example of how our expectations are ahead of the actual technology. If we can find a better option for body anchoring, i think we'd see companies making it. You wouldn't like your XREAL as much if all the hardware to do that head tracking was built in. The SOC, the battery, the active cooling. You're now in oculus/vive territory.

    A few caveats for prospective buyers in August 2023-streaming (wirelessly) media to the Beam is a terrible experience at present. Streaming services like Netflix or Apple TV simply don’t stream (due to content protection issues) while free content like RUclips is a crapshoot. Also, not mentioned here, you’re better to direct connect the XReal Airs to your Steam Deck, as the Beam introduces noticeable latency. However, as the guys state, the glasses in tandem with the Beam work fantastically when A.) you are wired and B.) you need another monitor for productivity. Beam does allow for direct connect to the Switch, but again latency is an issue, even wired. The Beam seems to introduce an added layer of processing between console and display, so gamers beware. Directly connecting glasses sans Beam to the Steam Deck produces no such latency and feels like a native experience to my eye (though you don’t get all the cool AR features of the Beam, the display is still fantastic without all that for gaming).

      I want to use this to game on PlayStation 5 as I don't have decent enough space for a monitor and a desk what is the latency like fully wired

    • @BrianJones-wk8cx
      @BrianJones-wk8cx 5 месяцев назад

      @@joshclark3996 I can’t speak to the PS5 specifically (don’t own one), but on my Steam Deck, fully wired with Beam and Airs, the experience is quite good. Not quite native Steam Deck display, but close enough for a good experience, especially if you’re not super sensitive to latency. I have to give X Real their kudos, as this summer that was not my experience. However, software and firmware updates to both glasses and Beam have improved the experience to a point where I don’t play without the Beam any more. Sizing up the image to 130” virtual screen is spectacular and makes my standard 65” TV look minuscule in comparison. Assuming it works with the PS 5 the same as it works with my Steam Deck, you should have a great time. Hope that helps!

I will say also I think it would be great to see an explanation of what it takes to get one to be closer to the other and what gets simplified to really show what that means for those in the market of how far we've come for these glasses and understanding the option.

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I absolutely agree and that narrative of its just a monitor or tv you can wear is really not doing it fully the service and understanding for others not in the know. The fact that depending on your device it can be your computer setup through your phone with the right accessories, personal big screen for gaming/entertainment or with the right brains a floating in space secondary monitor as you mentioned.

    For me I'm kinda looking at the Meta Quest 3 to be my AR glasses because for just $100 or so more I get VR as well however it depends on how good the passthrough is like can I wear it walking from the car to the doctor's office waiting room as I can with the AR glasses but I have no idea with the quest 3... And if not how does it work when in VR apps? like I know how AR glasses work and a mirrored/dex screen is honestly good enough but for the money I need to upgrade from the Rift CV1 sometime...

My next question is the one that may be a GAME changer in buying the Rokid. I am ALL MAC. I have iPhone and iPads. I am being operated on soon and have to be bed ridden for a week. I have a large movie library on my iPad and various Flash Drives that are USB C. Because the beam supports motion can you lock the screen in space and if you tilt your head does the image stay locked? I know it doesn't bother me if the image moves but I know some are very sensitive to that. Also with using something like a deck how much latency is added through video processing from the Beam?

    I apologize for the long question coming up, but im not really sure how to explain my question in a way that's easy to understand, so please bare with me, lol.
    However, as an Android user, it seems like I basically already have everything on my phone that the Rokid Station would give me.
    But, the "beam" would allow me to control my phone without having to look down at my phone to see what buttons I'm hitting, what apps im opening or what my thumbs are clicking on while using the "blacked out" lenses on the glasses, correct?
    Like, the glasses would show whatever is on my phone screen if I mirrored it or even used "Samsung Dex" through the glasses. But, the "beam" would show me a beam through the glasses so that I could click and choose what I'm trying to do, correct? Like, I could keep my phone in my pocket and just use the "beam" to control my phone and click on apps and use the keyboard while seeing my phone through the display on the glasses, correct?
    I'm just confused on how I would be able to control my phone or laptop with the "blacked out" lenses and not being able to see what I'm clicking on on my phone.
    I guess with a laptop, I could still use the mouse to control and click on stuff, but mirroring my phone display, I'm confused on how. I know "Samsung Dex" just turns my phone into a "mouse pad" and keyboard. But, if I wanted to keep my phone in my pocket, idk how I would be able to control it. That's why I was hoping I could just use the "beam" and see a beam on the display in the glasses and open and close apps on my phone with that without having to take my phone out of my pocket...

      The Rokid Station is literally a portable Android TV with official Google certification, although it's worth pointing out that Rokid still doesn't have official Netflix certification at this time of writing.
      As for the Beam, it's a bridge for any phones or tablets that doesn't support wired video out. In other word, the Beam can be used on any phones.

    For me, I'd rather have the Rokid Max because of the diopter adjustment, but I'd rather have the Beam than the Station because of the ability to pin the display, smooth the display in bumpy situations like car rides, or add another screen altogether. I intend to use my Samsung phone for content delivery (gaming, movies, etc), so the Station is basically useless for me. I neither need nor want another content delivery source. Kind of wish I could buy the Beam and plug the Rokid Max glasses into it and have it work the same as it would with the XREAL glasses, but I suspect it won't. Thanks for doing this comparison. • @SomeGadgetGuy

      Probably none? The station exists because less the 8% of the overall smartphone market can use these glasses directly. If the choice is "buy the most expensive phones Honor/Moto/Samsung make, or buy $100-ish portable Chromecast that can also work on your TV" it's kinda even money what people might spend their money on to support these glasses.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 месяцев назад

      It's an issue of power and DRM. Producing the head tracking significantly reduces run time over the station, and requires that cooling fan to run well. Then XREAL needs to get approvals for licensing and DRM from all the apps that might stream video. I expect they're working on it, but I wouldn't expect all those updates right away.

      @rushmore3927 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I think the reason the Rokid glasses do not have the same square non distorted image (as the Nreals) is the display positions when wearing. The Nreals displays are flat when wearing and the image is square and non distorted. The Rokids have a slight angle and this results in the same thing as having a projector not set square. With a projector though, you can adjust via keystoning. Can't do that with the Rokids. Seems an odd design decision. The displays should at least have been offset to compensate.

      Different sides of the same problem. If your content is on an iPhone 14 or older, then it can't talk directly to the glasses. If your content is on a PC, and you want better controls for the head tracking, an app might not get that done on a PC. These are the lessons we learn along the way.
