Pen tip #6 - How to refill & reseal Pilot cartridges

- Do you wish the nice Pilot iroshizuku inks were avaliable in cartriges? Or do you want to use other ink brands but the proprietary cartridge system doesn't allow you to? Just fill them with a syringe. But the best part? You can reseal the cartrige after refill and take whatever ink you like with you in your travels!

For anyone who doesn't have Parker cartridges lying around, the smaller end of a chopstick works well for resealing too!

And it works. I never had an ink leaking accident with this method, so far.
I wish Pilot and others would make a fancy cartridge of high quality clear plastic like the Con-40 or Con-70 that we could syringe refill. These would look great in demonstrator pens.
Now I understand why there's a 45° angle beveled tube around the feed around most Pilot pens. Thanks for the trick ; )

Sorry for the very late reply. I am happy this video helps you. Pilot cartridges are great because of this re-sealing capacity. I love that. It is good way to take a Pilot pen on a travel with your favourite ink as a refill, not needing to carry an ink bottle.
I use “crocodile forceps” to remove the seal without squeezing the mouth of the cartridge
Yes, that is a good way to not force the mouth of the cartridge and extend its life. I use forceps too, most of the times. But I wanted to show an easy and almost tool-less way to do this.

I use the same type of syringe. I made the needle blunt with a carbide file tool (don't use nail files) it takes its time but the needle becomes blunt and safe for use. Nice video, thanks and may you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy 🖖.

I think this is useful, because it allows to travel with a couple of cartridges instead of an ink bottle.

Glad it helped. This allows to have the favourite ink in a Pilot cartridge and easily and securely take it in a sealed cartridge!
I use a insulin bottle and insulin seringe.
I wash insulin bottle and fill it with ink. It is usefull in travel because the bottle is safe for planes or pressure change. And it never leaks.

Choose that bottle intended of insulin pens.
They are fantastic because they are kind like a seringe.

Os tubos de insulina para aplicadores do tipo caneta são como seringas mas não tem o êmbolo. Todavia, tem uma borracha que desliza no seu corpo análogo à das seringas de plástico. Assim quando fizeres o reabastecimento do tubo com tinta podes tirar todo o ar, isso é importante.
Assim que for tirando a tinta para usar não te precisas preocupar pois a borracha vai escorregando como a vedação de uma seringa, ou seja, puxando a tinta para fora a borracha escorrega no tubo e não fica nem bolha de ar nem pressão negativa. Com isso nunca vaza, nem em aviões.
Teste e verás é uma solução maravilhosa.
Use também as seringas de insulina para reabastecer os cartuchos pois ellas tem o volume um pouco maior do que o de um cartucho da parquer.(100u de insulina = 1cc) Eu uso a marca BD, que era as que meu pai usava antes de falecer.

@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita , talvez algum familiar que seja diabético possa fornecer-te vários desses reservatórios vazios. A verdade é que depois do uso eles são descartados, todo mundo joga fora.
Primeiro deve-se injetar o volume de ar da seringa no tubo vazio, até expelir a borracha deslizante.
Lave o tubo.
Depois de lavado, coloca-se uma agulha na ponta para que o ar possa sair, enquanto empurra a borracha de vedação até a ponta. O tubo agora está igual a quando estava vazio, só que lavado, sem vestígios de insulina.
Basta basta encher a seringa de tinta e a introduzir no reservatório.
Quando estiver cheio, antes de retirar a seringa com a agulha, retire o resto de ar que estiver dentro do tubo.

I am looking at the cartridge that came with my Pilot Petit 1. It has a yellow cap (which I kept). I will try refilling the cartridge and hopefully the yellow cap will re-seal the cartridge. Thanks for the tip.
I never tried with a Petit. But I just look at the opening of its cartridge and it seems to be the same as in my regular Pilot cartridges. So I don't see why it shouldn't work...
It’s brilliant! When I watched your video on refilling cartridges I had hoped to get a tip on resealing them too. Several of my cartridge pens are Pilot branded, or Pilot compatible. I like the big opening of the Pilot cartridges because I get the feeling it works well for viscous inks or with a high degree of surface tension. I reuse all my cartridges and yesterday I removed the seal from a Pilot cartridge that was hard to clean otherwise. I will save the seals from now on.
Thanks! Yes, save them, and every cartridge, even if you have now cartridges without the disk. The cartridges will eventually die before the disks and then you will even the numbers of both.

That is very useful indeed! Thank you. I own a Pilot VP capless and have only a limited supply of sepia brown ink cartridges I bought in Tokyo. Now I don't need to worry about running out of nice sepia inks to put in my VP pen, as I'll be able to use other inks and put them into Pilot cartridges. Also, I generally prefer converters on the grounds that single use cartridges are wasteful and simply add to the mountains of plastic we produce: this is a really "green" answer! Great video!
Would you have a similar suggestion for Sailor cartridges?

I recommend you to use 1ml insulin syringes, they much easier to operate and they never do bubbles.
Thank you for the tip. I have these ones just because they are the ones that are easily available for free... (I have a doctor in the family that always has some syringes at home - not insulin ones - and I get them for free when they eventually get unused and out of the "use by" date and are no longer safe for medical purposes)

Thank you. This is not difficult to do at all. Simple ans works great. But I guess when Gabriel Falcinelli makes Pilot size stoppers you won't need this tip anymore.
@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita I think it would take quite a bit of brass to make a stopper for Pilot cartridges ... I will be trying your tip for mine! I knew those little plastic circles were hanging out there in my empties but I never did more than turn them sideways with the ink syringe when refilling them with Ink! ✒

No need to remove the seal. Unless you want to not remove the cartridge from the pen! In this case the cartridge can last years if not to infinite!🎉
I remove the seal to be able to reseal it again and take some filled cartridges with me. But you can just refill and reuse over again, without removing the seal.
Thank you, loved the tip, but just 1 question, can I simply skip the resealing step? since I would just refill the cartridge and then put it back in my fountain pen with the opening of the cartridge and the tip of the pen facing the sky. Can I do that? Since I think that the resealing process is slightly anoying

Yes, you can. But if you leave your pen unused for some time the ink in the cartridge may evaporate slowly, depending on the cap seal. But yes. I do it without re-sealing if I am using the pen immediately. I only re-seal if I go traveling and I need to take a few cartridges with me.

I push the seal disk with the butt of another pilot cartridge. They don't go as deep but it's secure enough
Yes, it works. I decided to use Parker cartridges because they put the disk in the same place as the original position on new Pilot cartridges.

Here another tip. If you can't find pilot cartridges but have long waterman international cartridges. You can just cut the waterman cartridges at the line near the opening. Then they will fit pilot pens .

Is there no way to use the normal cartridges for the Pilot fountain pen?
As far as I know, no. The opening is very different. Except if you are talking about the MR or the Vortex, which accecpt the international cartridges.

Thank you Paulo..do you have any advise when you have an ink sample and you fill the converter with a syringe. What is the best method to make the feed wet? Pushing the converter is one way but I don't know if it is the best way?
I do that sometimes. I think there is a little trick to do it a little bit more efficiently. Overall I do it with your method but with an extra step. I might do a video on that also, if you find it useful.
Will this ink work on a Pilot V7 refillable rollerball pen?
I am not sure. I don't have one of those to try.

But how do you dry the cartridge after the water?
I just shake it and leave it open at the air untill it dries. I have always more than one empty, so I don't really need to wait each one to dry before I can reuse the pen with another refilled cartridge.

I don't think so. I think you will need to have some kind of stopper to place on the "mouth" of the Sailor cartridge.
