I'd usually start at the inside guard socket as excess wires causing a short or the wires bring pinched by the IGS are usually more common than micro breaks in the insulation Obviously a physically sticking tip is a fair indication of where the issue might be.
when i was a club armourer this was usually the problem... you loosen the grip (either hex nut for pistol .. or pommel for french grip) and the light goes off from constantly on... so the problem is obvious ... someone tightened the grip without making sure the wires were in the groove hereby crushing the wires... saw this so often (i don't think I ever saw a tip problem where the light was constantly going off so the guard was usually first place I checked... and easiest...)
