    This video was really helpful. I recently tried assembling my first epee from AllStar and have their test box TZ10. I am not sure if I am testing correctly, there is only a solid red light when the tip is pressed. I could not find any documentation but have you seen this tester before or know if it only has red lights ? Thank you so much!

    After 30+ years of inactivity, I started fencing again just a few weeks ago (this time foil). So I don't know if my method of getting a very accurate weight spring is (still) allowed. I used to take a new spring. hold it with a Lineman's pliers (US English) or combination pliers (UK English) heat it with a small candle, then press the plies a little bit. The spring will get weaker. This way I could very accurate change the force of the spring to match the 750grams, but not 760 grams. Making the spring stronger was difficult (not impossible), by using 2 pliers and stretch the spring while heating it up.

    • @albertbresca8904
      @albertbresca8904 Месяц назад

      that is an interesting idea... never tried heating the actual spring.. i have squished a spring in between pliers til it was weaker.. sometimes cutting off one revolution if i needed to .. but I can't see why they would ever check an epee that much on the strip (or worry about it) all they care about is if it works and passes weights... but thanks for that idea... i'll try it next time I have to spring that is too strong (that is waaay above 750 grams) .. i still remember years ago buying some old foils from a guy who was a very good fencer nationally (in australia) and could flick like a magician.. his electric foil tip spring were so strong they could hold up an epee weight... i was impressed (and a little shocked) with how he had been able to fence at all...

    What are the most likely sources for errors when the red light turns on when the tip is depressed normally?

    • @askanarmourer9549
      @askanarmourer9549 3 месяца назад

      If an epee is setting off the red light on the test box, typically it means something is connecting where it shouldn't. I would check the tip for dirt and the connecting spring to make sure it's nice and straight and not angled at all.

  • @Z.O.M.G
    @Z.O.M.G 4 месяца назад

    My first epee does this but only sometimes and can be temporarily fixed by moving the socket a bit. The thing is it was very recently repaired and rewired for a different issue, and though I can be rough, I doubt I managed to break it in the 3 bouts I had with it. I'm thinking it may be water damaged as I had to carry it through the rain (with an umbrella) and it got a little wet' though the problem persists even now that it's dry. It is trully cursed, any ideas?

    • @askanarmourer9549
      @askanarmourer9549 4 месяца назад

      Hmmmm it may be some water seep in, but it sounds like it could also be the wire not being fully snug in the connector, or still having a layer of glue insulating it partially. So I would check that the wire is fully clear and sand it down a bit to confirm, as well as making sure the nuts in the connector are fully tightened. Good luck!

      Definitely rinse multiple times to get all of the detergent out, and yes use fresh water each time. Sometime I find I have to wash multiple times as well, depending on how dirty the lames get. For example, cleaning my personal one if typically one wash as I do that more frequently, but cleaning the team practice ones would require multiple wash cycles as they were used much more frequently and washed sparingly.

You can lay one of those things in the groove for half an hour and it won't cut the steel worth a damn. Thank you for the detailed review. I find that with some foils (new ones or even ones that I've rewired), I hit the foil against my shoe while plugged in the test box and it's fine. But, when I hit it really hard with another metal foil or a hard PVC, the test box briefly signals discontinuity). I set my Favero tester/hit detector from test to foil and hit the blade and it doesn't register a problem. I'm very confused and not sure if I've failed in my rewiring or received a bad brand new foil or if I'm testing the blade too hard? Does the discontinuity have to last for a period of time before it registers a white light (like a hit on target)? I've used some of these foils that I've rewired but fail against a hard wrap on the blade and sometimes they seem just fine and I get no intermittent white lights and other times I get a light and I'm back to diagnosing again. Any tips would be appreciated.

    • @askanarmourer9549
      @askanarmourer9549 Год назад

      Hmmm that is strange. My normal first thought in situations like this is that there may be a slight misfit between your bodycord and foil, so in some situations it reads white light and others it works, and both items test fine individually. The other thing I would look at is if your barrel is on tightly enough. I have found sometimes I get even brand new blades that the barrel is a bit loose. And of course, I'm always a proponent of just giving the inside of the barrel a good cleaning! Best of luck with it!

    • @askanarmourer9549

      Masks, lamés, gloves, and wires. Weapons are done by the referees on piste. We do one fencer to an armourer as everyone there is nationally certified and knows how to check everything rather than needing to train volunteers. Plus given the number of people checking in we find different stations tends to lead to more confusion. And it varies, epee is much fast than foil which is faster than sabre, and the more broken items also slow things down. We're working on getting more definite numbers

    • @mdeb2007

    I've used conductive thread quite a bit and In my experience, if you are sewing with conductive (metal) thread on a domestic sewing machine there are a few things you can do to lessen thread breakages: * use a specific metallic needle * slow the speed of the machine right down to its lowest speed * put your metallic spool upright in your machine OR * use the metallic thread in your bobbin only (requires you to sew from inside the lamé jacket) Also when sewing 90 degree corners, to lesson the bulk of 4 layers of material: after you have folded both sides of the material you will see a small square or rectangle in line with the folds on both sides. Cut this square/rectangle out with a pair of scissors. Makes your life sooo much easier, especially if patching with the inox stainless steel material!

      We get our fair share....like parents who refuse to listen to WHY the mask that just failed the punch test must be taken away.

    You did a great job of showing just how MUCH work goes into putting on a major US national event....and some of the regionals are not that much smaller!

    Always blows me away just how MUCH expensive stuff gets left behind each night. As a vendor, sure....means you buy more from me. As a fencer...REALLY???

    Tinning the wire before soldering should not be considered optional: it's much easier to get a good joint with the end tinned. Also, I would suggest that you dip the tinned wire in flux paste before soldering it on the pad. Especially if you are not adding solder as you remake the connection, the flux will greatly assist the solder to flow nicely. Solder has flux in its core, so if you aren't adding flux you may not get good flow. If you don't have a shiny bright solder joint, with the solder flowed smoothly around the wire, then the joint is not good and you should redo it. Dull solder is usually caused by moving wires before the solder hardens. Not smooth, incompletely covered joint is due to not enough heat or not enough flux.

    The fact that F4 was the only cursed piste was a GREAT change from San Jose last season when we had a whole POD that was cursed! I love how Tim and I are kinda leaning away as Brian bent that reinforcement band back on the lid...just in case! My fave strip call was a bail replacement that the pod captain didn't realize I took care of with in a few seconds of showing up!

    Thanks for showing the trick concerning the print on the lamee 👍 Any experience using it on the flashy lightweight ones? Or is their fabric to delicate?

      At which part, the national armoury certification? That's not so much an official certificate as being recognized as having the knowledge and experience required to work at a national level event. I just say certification because it's easier and faster

    I would like to ask something, yesterday I noticed my epee point is a little loose, as if the barrel had not enough glue, it can be rotated. How can I fix the point and not to rewire? What would you recommend? Do you have any video about it?

      It would depend on the size and location honestly, without seeing it I couldn't give you a proper answer. You can send me more info at my email or instagram and I can try to help there!
