There is a great TED talk about happiness and stress from a mid 30s Asian whose family owns a rice far. He basically states that they are very happy and he cannot understand that people get so stressed. In summary, he says that the family work hard for 3 weeks planting all of the rice seeds. Then wait and play with other families. The harvest never fails . Then they work for 1 month to harvest the rice. Then sell it all . Get the cash , take the cut to live on, save and reinvest to buy more seed. Then 7 months of rest to play again until it’s time to sow again. Lives in fresh air, high in the mountains, and, has a lovely happy community. No crime.

I can answer the title to this video without even watching it. It's the same as it ever was - people chose the "safe" option of a guaranteed living right after the two biggest wars and the most impactful economic collapse of all time. Government and big business said, "We will protect you," and the people said, "Thank you," and felt safe.
And while 1945 to 1971 was a blip in history, during that time the middle class really did work and wage workers really were taken care of. But any historian and economist worth their salt could've predicted things would go back to the Lord/Knights/Serf dynamic because the few have always lived well off the many.

At roughly the 4:50 mark in this video, you talk about how companies use meetings to manipulate us. It reminds me of something else that they do. They talk about the importance of embracing change. Those who embrace it are rewarded (with a treat using your puppy analogy) and those who don't are criticized. I've never fully embraced these "changes" for one simple reason. They end up costing you some combination of time, money or effort and they only really benefit one person or group. The change is never a substantial raise, more vacation time or something along those lines. It's almost always means more work for the same money.

Me personally: I enjoy team meetings. It gives me the perfect excuse to be less productive at work and engage in intellectual conversation. Our company is self aware of that, so they limit the length of their meetings to no more than 1 hour. Almost everyone else in my company hates meetings.

The answer to your question is Communism. Communism scared everyone on earth and rightly so; communism is terrible; but so is hyper capitalism, so when the Capitalists (which when maintained properly is great) defeated the Communists (And the Fascists for that matter because thats another competing socio economic system) they got full reign to devote themselves to profit at the expense of everything else in civilization. Thats quite ironic given the system espouses the value of competition.
TL;DR: Communism was so bad and soo freighting that people put too much trust in the capitalist system in exchange. Capitalism and the free market are wonderful; but HYPER CAPITALISM is not. It's just as unethical and unsustainable as Communism.

Economies of scale would collapse without this dynamic. We can't all work for ourselves. I only work part time in a labor union, and outside of all the formality, I love my job. The only thing that matters, is perspective, and these days where perspective is concerned, we are all our own worst enemies. We've been programmed to reject the modern world, and because of that, it's failing right before our eyes. If we are victims of anything, it's the duality, abstraction, absolutism, and formalism of Plato's Cave of subjectivity, and subjecthood. All things are good, and evil at the same time.

I manage by living at home with my elderly mother, and doing odd jobs where I can. My perspective on it all has very little to do with me, and more to do with my understanding of the failures of collectivism.
You should spend some time learning about The Bolshevik "Revolution" (proxy war). About China's "Great Leap Forward" (backwards), "struggle sessions", and just how many tens of millions of people died, mostly from starvation. How do you know your thoughts are your own? A universal basic income is coming regardless of how any of us feel about it.
We'd be better off keeping our rights, and agency in place while we make the transition. The biggest problem with collectivism, is the illusion of "the greater good". It's far too subjective, and ultimately impossible. Collectivism requires we give up too much of our agency. It's just totalitarianism disguised as humanism.
You have just as much freedom to find a job you like as I do. People need to give labor unions a try. They are EOE's. I'm an off-the-scale felon, and I was hired straight out of prison. I had to sleep in a tent for 6 weeks just to go to their welding school because I couldn't afford anything else.
