Nothing is going to roll well on a stimp for a home green unless you have amazing drainage and are growing on sand and rolling. Great tips about top dressing and grass cultivar for non Bermuda folks watching all these "golf course lawn" videos.
You’re absolutely right about sand and rolling. It makes a huge difference on the putting surface. There is definitely a lot more to the “golf course lawn” than mowing with a reel and putting down every DIY liquid available.
You are going to be a rockstar my man. Your videos are authentic, informative, and personable. Keep up the good work and more importantly keep being a great dad.
Got my first topdressing done today. Growing pretty good right now about 10 days after a heavy 2/10's of a lb of N. Very light. 120lbs over 1,200 square feet. Getting going for the year and man it's exciting!!!
@@ReelTurf the actual rate was purely visual. I knew what type of layer I wanted and it came out to 120lbs. I've watched my superintendent topdress dozens and dozens of greens so I have learned what type of coverage I want. The reason I went light came down to a few factors. First and foremost is I'm not using PGR yet so I have to be mowing in short order. If I'd put my usual rate of sand I'd be regrinding my reel in no time. Next is I have some immature turf from the heavy duty aeration I did in the fall. The overseed went great but I am babying those plants for the moment. It's not so much the sand that concerns me but the amount of brushing that I wanted to reduce because of the young turf. Even with amthe softest brush I own there's still some abrasiveness applied to the plant that I wanted to limit. I waited until I had cut in each direction twice before topdressing as I wanted the plant to be in the mood to grow. That along with the big hit of N and I'm in the midst of a flush of growth which is usually not good but it's what I wanted. The last factor has nothing to do with turf! I have friends flying in this evening and we'll be having a few beverages and putting contests so I didn't want too much sand on the surface.
Legend! When your kid was wrenching on his mower i died hahaha, then he comes out with his own weed eater and blower! So epic hahaha. I love the sand spreading setup it's awesome. One of the best turf channels on youtube without doubt.
So important to my putting green. I think light topdressing has made the biggest difference to my green compared to anything else. Enjoy the conversation through email as talking bentgrass is a passion of mine.
@@ReelTurf yeah it's certainly not an immediate gratification type practice but consistency pays off and in a big way. Smoothing it out and firming it up you will absolutely notice this season. There's a lot of benefits but those will be the first you notice. Looks like a pretty good rate you put down too, usually once I go back and forth with my brush once the sand has found its way. A little water and you won't even notice it. Excited to see how it goes in the long run! Such an inexpensive and easy to perform cultural practice that just makes such a difference.
@@ReelTurf not sure of the temps in Texas where you are, but if it's very hot make sure to syringe the green for a couple afternoons. The sand will heat up the first couple days. Would need to be very hot to cause any issue but I don't know the weather down that way!
That’s a good point! We’ve been hot but not enough to heat the sand up too badly. Those reading this, think about beach sand under your feet and how hot that can get. Sand increases the heat on the turf. I have already started my cooling cycles this season. That has kept the sand cooled as well.
Going to do my first topdressing on my golf green today. Thanks for the video. Where’d you get your blade caliper tool? I have a straight edge with a bolt for my toro.
Glad you enjoyed it! R&R products sells the Acu gauge. I used to use a straight edge and bolt myself but noticed it was pulling the bedknife away from the reel a little each time. I was constantly having to readjust it. No more after getting the gauge.
I wish you’d do a video on your sliding driveway gate. Dimensions, operator type, etc. I need something like that for my driveway leading to my backyard garage. 👍
It was a GTOPRO opener. It doesn’t look like they’re made as that brand anymore. The gate was about 20’x7’. It was built out of a pipe frame and welded thin sheets of steel to it. The opener used a series of sprockets and chain to open and close. The bottom track on the concrete is a flat strap of steel with a small angle iron spot welded as the guide for the track. The wheels were some heavy roller with a groove that fit the angle iron. Pretty simple setup. I really enjoyed having it. It made the backyard feel bigger but also gave us the security for our vehicles. The only drawback with it was keeping the chain lubed. The sprinklers, rain, and pet contribution would tend to rust if not kept up with. When it would rust it would skip a tooth on the sprockets and get the open and close limits messed up.
@@ReelTurf Thanks for the gate info. I’m using a solar operator now and I’d like to switch to something stronger so I can replace the cedar planks with sheet metal. But I didn’t think about the added maintenance needed on the chain, so maybe I’ll hold off on switching for now. Im not looking to add another task to schedule on my calendar. 👍
That’s one hard working helper you got there. Is there a site that sells the sand tray ? That thing is amazing. Really enjoyed the video. Just looked in the description and noticed you have a link for the tray. Is this a product only made for Earth Way spreaders do you know.
Glad you enjoyed it! The best tip is stay consistent with mowing and turf maintenance. Plant growth regulator and spoon feeding fertilizer has a significant impact.
Hello! Glad you enjoyed it. I do not use tripod sprinklers. My irrigation is all underground. However, I have built a small stand out of 3/4” pvc and have used the rainbird 32SA or 42SA depending on desired throw distance. The rain curtain works VERY well and hits the grass at the base of the sprinkler.
Holy crap that sand spreading rig looks amazing
It works pretty great!

I’m excited for you! I know you’re a precise guy. How did you determine your 120lbs of sand?

I have about 2000'² of bentgrass (new to me house last year). I'm learning. I need to top dress it badly!
It makes a big difference!

Yep! I’m taking your approach this year. Anxious to see the results over the season. I’ve enjoyed our conversations as well!

Yes one pass of the brush and it was gone except in the middle where I intentionally built it up a bit.

Yes. That tray only fits the F80. It’s molded for that particular Earthway last time I checked.
Awesome Video. I am in the second year of my putting green. Trying to learn as much as I can along the way. any tips would be appreciated !
