Bags of sand? I almost swallowed my crack pipe!😮 Never knew you could buy it in bags, seems absurd to me lol. We get ours delivered by the truckload. Never have I seen a green topdressed with a broadcast spreader either. I like your channel, I like seeing different approaches and methods used by other greenkeeping professionals. I do irrigation. Formerly a greenskeeper for 6 years. Have fun out there dude.🤓
Oh yea...it’s a brutal task. When the superintendent wants to ensure the sand is dry...he makes us use bags. Otherwise, we use our sand that’s delivered via truck just like you. Appreciate you watching as always.
if i had bumpy spots all over my lawn, and i kept spreading sand with a rotary spreader, would the sand automatically fall from the high spots into the low spots over time to flatten out the lawn? or do you have to take out a broom or drag something flat to get it into the low spots and out of the high spots?
I believe this particular stuff is sold at wholesale. So, perhaps you can get it but you might have to order a high volume. Good question though...I’ll ask superintendent. Thanks for commenting.
John, we have a plant where I live in N.C. that produces industrial sand which is used to make glass. The company is Unimin Corporation and I’ve always used the good old fashion way of slinging with a shovel and blooming it in. I keep my GNZ zoysia at my house about an inch. It never occurred to me that I could do the same concept that you are sharing. I’ll have to give it a try with my Earthway commercial spreader. Thanks for sharing.

@supernom the dry sand spreads and works into the canopy much more evenly. And by keeping the top dresser off the green you are eliminating any tire tracks that it will leave.
No wonder the superintendent was let go. This is something you usually don't see on warn season greens. He's a superintendent he should of been taught all kinds of grasses including plants etc
This one guy that says he knows what he doing ‘NOT REALLY’ he was telling us NOT to sand our greens starve them of water and it’ll firm them but he’s a hack anyways ‘David spencer’ yes he’s a hack job! We lightly top dressed one cause it was scalping and it looked like hell and there was 3 inches of thatch in the green!!! I told him about thatch he asked me what that was and he’s in his 60s and he says he’s been doing this for 20 years HAH that’s a JOKE!! What do you guys think we need to do we’re in Vermont and I want my bosses greens better HELP me how many times a year should I do that I’ve read every 12-14 for a light too dress!?? Help!??
The type of sand is the secret to be able to go through the spreader.

U would need to make sure to apply a even amount throughout the lawn. Spots with more sand are more prone to drying out
I tried doing this in my spreader but the sand kept getting stuck. What's the secret to this? Also the sand was dry.
What type of sand? It's important to use kiln dried sand for this.

why not just load the sand into a machine spreader ?

Usually 0,2-2mm washed sand

What are you talking about? Top dressing is incredibly common at all golf courses no matter the grass.
