Doctor, Is there a reason that you chose to become a doctor that mostly saves the lives of those who lost their desires to be alive rather than those who desperately want to live but happened to have lost their health or got severely injured? I know suicidal patients are not the only type of patients you take care of but I'm asking since psychiatrists tend to take care of suicidal patients more than doctors in other departments. I also wanted to know if you feel that it's worth living the life that's making you want to die.
It’s taken me a while to answer this because this is such a great question! My faith pushes me to believe that there is *always* hope for things to be better. Something I say to my patients who have run out of hope is something like, “I’ll do my best to hold onto hope for you, until you’re in a space to see the hope for yourself.” That’s really at the center of why I do what I do 🫶🏾
