One of the most thorough reviews of the Z7 that I have seen. Thank you. As a summary, what I like most about my Z7 is the extraordinary ease of use. Often the concepts of "high function" and "ease of use" don't come together. For the Z7 they do! The ability to customize several user modes, all hardware controls, and many screens is extraordinary. Finally, the EVF extends the blue hour further than my previous cameras which limited my ability to focus in dark situations.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks! Yes, I would agree with your comments - particularly if you're already somewhat familiar with the Nikon menu paradigm.
How did you find the lowlight AF. I'm planning on using the touch screen a lot because I work on event stages and get into awkward angles with no much room to move. I'm hoping the touch screen AF will be ok. I only need single focus not continuous or tracking.
@@MaartenHeilbron I purchased my G7 after watching your review.. and happy with it.. just wished you covered one lil aspect more.. the choice of budget lens.. :-) Mind if i ask you here.. for a budget wide angle lens for g7?
Thanks for your very helpful and informative reviews. Even if I am not looking to purchase a particular camera I always find your reviews engaging and authorative, especially in the area of settings menus. You are actually more helpful and authorative than the manufacturer. Many thanks!
@@MaartenHeilbron It's not for entertainment value. It's for prestigious reviews that are second to none. I recently bought a fujifilm X-70 on ebay and have bookmarked your review for guidance.
Excellent review. I bought the Z6 but this review also makes the content applicable to the Z6. The ‘S’ for the lenses stands for ‘superior ‘. Keep up the great work!
I have no idea the total number of things that you were born to do, but reviewing cameras is certainly on that list somewhere. Thanks for this! I am still 110% happy with the state of Nikon DSLRs, but great to see their mirrorless world is going to be a winner.
Great your back :) we missed you these past weeks, looking forward to your reviews, travels and outstanding photos and advice.Z7 looks nice but its outside my range right now.
Thanks - nice to know I was missed. Outside my price range too. I wanted to see what I might be missing, and it's nice cameras in this price range to have a point of comparison. In the best case scenario some of what makes this camera interesting will come to less expensive cameras.
A very detailed and comprehensive review of the Z7, Maarten! As I mentioned before, I'm still researching between this Z7 and the Sony a7Rlll, from my Fuji X-T3 system. My main "focus" is creating large prints with the image sharpness, detail and clarity approaching medium format. Not sure yet if the Nikon S lenses would be better for that task than some of the Sony/Zeiss lenses. I have read that the new Nikon S 24 - 70 f/2.8 is superb, as is the Nikon S 50 f/1.8. But then, I've also read that the Sony 90 f/2.8 Macro G OSS is super-sharp as well. Thanks again, sir!
Thanks for the kind words. Sharp, particularly with those high res sensors is difficult. I often find that even with a tripod that I need to use electronic front and a 1s delay for a truly sharp and clear image. Both the Nikon S series (and the 24-70F2.8 is spectacular) ruclips.net/video/I_24vdFH7B0/видео.html and the Sony G-Master lenses are the top of the game. I have a slight preference (operationally) for the Sony (I love that focus button!). For detailed quality comparisons you're best to go where I go - dxomark. I haven't had a chance to shoot with the 90mm.
Polished Professional Presentation providing always in depth non biased quality and detailed information in an easy relaxed ,homely manner which makes this Chanel a delight to view and eargarly await. Many thanks for all your great work,
Another insightful and well-crafted video, Maarten. One feature any camera would benefit from having are a “Recently Used” and a “Most Often Used” menu tabs. They would build themselves automatically as you use your camera based on menu selections you use all the time and often, and based on menu items you used very recently. This way there would be almost no need to hand-craft Custom menus, or you could create custom menus from those auto-generated menus. I’d call them Smart Menus. And when these become adopted, I expect royalties for my idea :)
Thank you for the kind words. Yes! Brilliant idea, wish I'd thought of that - or one of the product managers at Nikon, Sony, Canon or Fuji had. I hope you will enjoy your royalties, or at least bragging rights!
If you are not a university professor you should be. Great review, enjoyable tone and very informative. Appreciate your hard work and impressive review
Excellent! Not personally a Nikon fan. I bought two A9s based on your last review however. But they way you present your videos would make me buy anything!
I appreciate your kind word. Oh, it's not my intention to sell anything, just to show you what you're in for. I thought there were enough issues that if you wanted to talk yourself out of the Z7 you could.
Thank you, Maarten! I'm thinking of trading my a9 for the Z 7. Nikon's ergos and controls always have fit me better than nearly anything else, back to my first camera (Nikon FE).
Maarten, you are one of my top go-to reviews, if not the very best. This review is more of the same---not just good ambrosia, great ambrosia, but, frankly, I'm waiting for an exclusively video-centric review of the Z6. So far, no one has done one. Presently, I have a X-T3, an X-H1, and the Z6 as my main cameras. I'm planning a "user's review" of the X-H1 soon, but I'd love to hear your take on the Z6 and analysis of how to get the best from it regarding video. My own impression vis a via a week of video shooting--I love this camera!
Always nice to see your comments, thanks for the kind words, they're always appreciated. That's quite the stable! How do you choose which to use? Please send a link when you post your video. I'm planning to do the Z6 early in 2019 and am planning/hoping to do video settings posts for both - it's always time dependent.
Oh my gosh Maarten, What an amazing review. Sterling work. Very grateful to you for the work you do and the professionalism wicth which you do it. I do not know if there is a more engaging and encyclopaedic reviewer of camera gear. I have watched your overview/tutorial videos of cameras I own and some I don't and they are incredibly informative from a how-to-use-well perspective as well as from a should-I-buy-perspective. I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with some of your well marked-out 'I don't like' or 'I do like' foibles and that is just fabulous. Thank you for the detail and time taken to figure out what the average person would want and what the enthusiast would want also. I think - and I felt that you may have shown this in some of your comments - that the Z series of cameras are great but not ground breaking. They provide many wonderful features but they lack some features which current cameras from some other brands provide for a very similar price. We are then paying for the Nikon badge - which is not bad thing as it usually denotes high quality, but bears calling out in this instance. I am a D750 user and am thinking about getting the Z6 - any thoughts? I am not a pro and do not think I will become one so I am wondering if swapping now is a useful thing to do as I have no real problem with the weight and the D750 is more capable than my current but growing expertise. As you can probably hear …. I am leaning towards doing nothing and getting the most from my D750. I am however dealing with a gnawing feeling that I should get into mirrorless. Is that my inner 'sheep' trait calling? What do you think?
Thank you for your very kind and generous comments, much appreciated. I don't think I'd be in any hurry to upgrade from a D750 - which in my mind remains a terrific camera. Do nothing, but do go out and shoot until your battery is empty and your memory card is full.
Wow, more than half of the functions that you reviewed I‘ll probably never use or know how to use properly, I’m afraid. But it’s good to know what my great new camera is capable of. I’ll use your review as a reference. Thanks a lot.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. One day you'll think ... Wait, my camera does that ... or just keep trying and experimenting with the features until you get familiar. It's digital, experimenting is free, so shoot until your memory card is full and your battery is empty.
I got the new 24-70 f.2.8 for my Z7 and updated to the auto eye focus and am quite happy. My DSLRs are in back of my equipment closet except for keeping the D700 handy as backup.
Great video I’m hoping to buy one soon. I see the User Presets 1,2,3 being a great help, something Nikon ‘borrowed’ from Canon. I would love to have had more details here, precisely what did you mean when you said the presets could not be explicitly configured? I’m guessing you mean there are some limitations?
Thanks, I do appreciate the kind words. They can be a great help, if you have a good memory and are disciplined about your shooting. There is no page in the menu where you can see which settings are configured, or adjust those settings. This means that there is no way to review, select or edit your settings. And yes, there are limitation, although they are relatively minor. The manual explains.
Thanks Maarten that was very helpful. I'm hoping to buy a Z6 soon as the video seems a little bit better in that model. You provide a great start up guide it's invaluable the way you lay it out.
My respects and many thanks to you sir, you've earned a new subscript to your channel for one of the most comprehensive and detailed reviews I've seen so far of the Nikon Z7.
Is this camera more than capable for lowlight photography too? I’m going to use it more for landscape but think it’ll be great for astrophotography and picking up the Milky Way? Heard about banding issues. Great review by the way
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I'm not sure how to quantify "more than capable", but I thought it was better than average at high ISOs. I did not try astro photography, so can really comment - you'll have to be guided by others for those issues.
Your videos are brilliant, Maarten. You already made a lot of videos about the cameras made by big players in the photography market like Nikon, Panasonic or Sony, but maybe you would review a Pentax camera? Pentax seems to be usually overlooked by youtubers, and i think its a bit unjust, since they appear to me as a reasonably-priced nice piece of photographic equipment. Anyway, i find your vids very helpful, keep on doing your thing as you are great in that!
I would like to, but have not been successful establishing contacts with Pentax's media relations department to arrange a loan. Thanks for the reminder to keep trying.
Great review Maarten - even though I have no intention of owning it, this provides a great resource into the way Nikon designs cameras. I'm actually more interested in the Z6 but even that is not on the near horizon since I'm still happy with the X-T20 and still working on figuring out all the hidden details in the way Fuji designs cameras. Still, Nikon could save a lot of $$$ by forgoing the manual and just giving a link to this video....;-) Cheers
AT the 20:57 mark the"200 images in Burst Mode" limit has been explained to me as a safety feature to prevent you from burning-out your shutter if, for instance you put your camera in your bag and forget to turn it off and the shutter=release button is pressing against something in the bag that might inadvertently actuate/trigger the shutter.
First, why would you put your camera away when it's still powered on, and would it not auto-power off after a minute or two? Then, why would you put your expensive camera gear in a bag with other stuff (ie, not a specific camera bag) where that might occur? But really, you are inventing this - have you, or anyone you actually know, had this happen? And why is Nikon the only manufacturer even remotely concerned about this? And if this is an issue for some people, who not an unlimited option for the rest of us?
Very nice review, but i want to know something, did you had shutter shock with the Z7? A lot are have trouble with it and they say to enable electronic first curtain shutter, what do you think about it?
Thank you for your kind words. I did not observe it in any of my photos, however, I did not intentionally try to create situations where it might be an issue. The options to shoot with electronic front curtain, or fully silent shutter would eliminate that issue in situations where it could be evident.
You see those Flimsy Rubber Caps covering the connections at 5:00 in? Panasonic has actual Doors, with Full Length Hinges! With some improvements, they could've sent this out as a Beta version, so users could tell them how far off they are, but I imagine it would take Nikon another year to make this into a useable camera. It seems that they are completely clueless! ...As usual, a Very Good video, Maarten!
Every manufacturer seems to be intent on developing a different cap and door for every model, and every port. I wish they would all find a best practice and use it consistently.
Hi, great video. I just ordered an used Z7. I saved this video to review it later with the camera on hand. Do you know if I can transfer photos to my iMac using the USB-C cable? Thanks!
Thanks for detail review on z7 picture quality very sharp but have big confusion which one is the best like fujiflim xt3 or Sony A7lll Does Camara is the key for good picture or need to spend money in glass I am just new in hobby
Yes, I appreciate the confusion. Hard to decide. Yes, lenses are an essential and crucial element to image quality, otherwise, the sensor can't provide the detail and quality it is capable of.
I appreciate your kind words. The on-camera scenes (for this video) are shot with a Fujifilm X-T3, the closeups are shot with a Sony A6300 with 30mm macro, the screens are captured with an Atomos Ninja recorder.
Thank you for such a thorough and clear review. I am a long time Nikon user and shoot with a D5 and D3s. I have had a look at the Z7 to do two things, firstly replace my now aged carry around Fuji X E1 (i.e. when I am not on assignment) and secondly to start a transition to a lighter kit (I do a lot of travel photography) this would allow me take the D5 plus the Z7 and reduce by one camera, one charger and still have the versatility to use the Z7 as a second body with my current lens collection. I have read that focus speed is slow(er) versus the D850 and quality not quite as good. My question, would you be inclined wait for Z7II down the track with a few of the things you covered fixed especially given I have no pressing need to change kit right now?
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Sounds like you have a good kit, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to change anything. I didn't find the focus speed or quality to be lesser than the D850 - it's the lack of a second card slot that makes this a lesser camera. I'm not sure which issues they might address in the next model - and Nikon's release/update cycle is slower than average. When it's time for you to switch/upgrade just do it.
You've been sold a load of codswallop. Who puts their camera in a bag when it's still turned on? And what kind of crazy camera bag is it where the shutter might get pushed? This is rationalization, not explanation. After all, no other camera manufacturer feels the need to do this, and if Nikon feels it's a good idea, why not let us set the limit, or no limit if we want? Not buying this for a second.
Hi Maarten, I looked through a z camera in a shop and found the EVF rather blue. I guess it displays the WB settings which were at auto and discovered that you can calibrate the EVF wb seperately in one of the settings, I guess your picture may still be blue in that case. However shooting in raw that can be addressed in post so I wondered if there is a setting for the EVF to be not responsive to the settings and have a neutral EVF? Thanks for your calm vlogs. Jan
In a camera shop, the EVF is usually rather yellow - maybe someone had mis-adjusted it. But, yes there is a setting to over-ride white balance in the EVF. Of course, as you point it, it's not always wise to trust the AWB.
Thanks. Nice location. I've been to the waterfront restaurant right in front of it and Blue Whale Cafe in the same alley but didn't quite notice a hotel there. Please keep the Z7 videos coming!
@@Nordlys1966 Yes, and a good restaurant as well. We stayed at the hotel and although the rooms are small, they are modern and well designed. What Z7 topics would you suggest?
Hi, Later on the firmware update that include a CF Express card format, Would that be enough to increase the buffer by a lot? Or even slightly? Just want a prediction :)
Interesting question. It won't increase the buffer, but it may increase the writing speed - although there might be a slight difference in performance, hard to predict what the change might be, won't be much.
Maarten Heilbron oh, Isn’t increasing the writing speed indirectly increasing the buffer? Since it can write the data to the cards much quicker? Also for the Nikon Z7, Is it true you can shoot at 8fps at 14 bit uncompressed raw and get around 18-20 raw files in a row?
Um, well, no. The buffer remains the same size - it's a fixed storage capacity on the camera's motherboard. The ability to write from the buffer to the card may change, but I'm not clear that it will increase. I didn't try that, my test was with JPEG only.
Thank you. But is it as good as the D850? I would buy the D850 tomorrow, however I have to wonder if DSLR's will survive. Sony has the good mirrorless glass that Nikon is still working on, but I feel that it would take the a7R3 and the a9 to give the usage range of the D850. I have no interest in video, in which the Sony has the upper hand. So I am hoping the the Z7 is an exact 'stills' mirrorless version of the D850. Comments ????? ........Cheers
That's a subjective question, and the reply depends on which factor(s) you weight most heavily. DSLRs will survive, just a theatres, LP records and radio survive. However, the trend is certainly towards mirrorless. I called my review of the D850 "the last full frame mirrorless", but it was a little tongue in cheek. It's not an exact duplicate of the D850, and a detailed comparison would yield preferences on both sides. Most of the decision factors will be personal, stylistic and dependent on your workflow and experience. I don't believe you'll be disappointed, but I can't be sure as the partnership between you and your camera depends on many issues. Hope this helps.
I noticed at 32:10, you mention that camera can both be powered and charged via USB C. is this correct statement? I see other reviewers mentioning that one negative thing about Z6 and Z7 is that is can be charged only when camera is OFF and not when camera is ON. please confirm. thanks.
Thanks for your videos I enjoy them a lot they are easy to follow and to the point. I have a question for do you have any information about picture quality wise between the new Z7 24-70 f4 lenses and the new Nikon 24-70 f 2.8E ED VRII. I just got this lense and planning to get a new Nikon but waiting to see which of the lenses is better to decide to buy either D850 or the Z7. Can you tell me which of the lenses is much better so I can decide which camera to get or with which camera it would work the best. Thanks for help and sugestiones.
I appreciate the kind words, thanks. I don't have the equipment to properly evaluate lenses. Look to either dpreview or dxomark. What I can say is that the larger flange diameter of the Z mount has the potential to provide for higher quality than the smaller F mount.
Hello Maarten, Need some guidance,. Assuming the same subject, is there a difference in how one handles a Z6 vs Z7, as it got more MP, does the user need to use higher shutter speeds to minimize shake, as the higher MP will capture the slightest blurr and magnify it? I am deciding which one to get, currently I use a D800 (36MP), and feel Z6 is a step down just from MP point of view, as I pixel peep. Not a video person, and only use camera on holiday landscape and cityscape. Thank you
While that's worth thinking about, I didn't test this and if you're concerned about this issue, it's wise to take it into account so that you're not disappointed later.
Thank you very much for your great video. My opinion is that is a bit early for those mirrorless cameras. I am going to remain with my D750 for a couple more years before I switch to the Z7. I also dislike the memory card which I heard that is going to be discontinued and is very expensive.
An very valid view - except for the memory card. Although SD is keeping up, XQD is faster, sturdier and with greater capacity. With both Nikon and Sony (and Sony pro cameras) using it, it will be around for a while.
I wonder if these can be found used? I’m I need Canada and I don’t have a dslr to help with my videos. I’m have some lenses from 35 mil camera that I’m thinking will fit a digital 35 mil body. Some of the lenses are automatic focus some are manual. It has been a long time since I have taken these out to look at them. Hmm this camera is nice, but I’m thinking not good for 4K video. Which I need most for clear panning. Looks like I’m still looking at GoPro 8 for moving. I’ll keep looking for a camera for tripod style filmin.
Might want to have a look around on the second hand sales sites. On the other hand, rumours abound about new models, so might be worth waiting as that will generate a bunch of used ones.
@@MaartenHeilbron You recommended (thank you) the X-T2 and i'm very happy with it, i'm not even interested in the X-T3, maybe in the future i'll look at the X-T4.
Thanks for your kind words. That's the two thousand dollar question. Well, the A73 has better burst and focus as well as a more full featured video mode.
So is 144Mbps in 4K, and 36Mbps in FHD enough for high quality video? Seems like a limitation than does not make sense since cards are expensive QXDs... And if filming 24fps, can you select 1/48th on the shutter? I might go the Fujifilm X-T3 afterall, so I am not sure about the focus breathing on the Fujicrons F2s.
Well, two or three years ago we thought it was ... Sony's maximum bit rate for 4K is 100Mbits. There is no 1/48 shutter, but I defy you to tell 1/60 from 1/48 - this is extremism. There's no need to worry about focus breathing if you use manual. Just sayin.
Maarten, you have one of the best review channel out there! Question please: Is it possible to record NEF + TIFF or is it just NEF + JPG? Also, is the video qulity high equivalent to ALL-I? Thanks!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. There is no option to record both, as TIFF is more or less equivalent to RAW (NEF). No, they're different. High refers to data rate (and is only available for HD). All- Intra is a compression scheme.
Why did you sell such a fine camera, particularly if you have a large lens collection? What is there about the Z7 that would make the investment in new lenses worthwhile?
Maarten, I‘ve got a question I can’t find an answer to. In A and M mode the displays show the right exposure, e. g. an underexposed picture is darker. Sure, this is a big advantage of mirrorless cameras. However, in shutter mode S the display doesn’t show a correct preview. With the exact same settings, whereas M mode shows the actual preview of the picture on the display (e. g. a dark, underexposed picture) in shutter mode the picture isn’t shown with the chosen settings (e. g. it appears bright and correctly exposed). Is there any technical reason for this? (Option d8 “apply Settings to live view” is activated) Thanks.
In terms of the display, there should be no difference between those modes. Let me confirm - in shutter mode the picture that you take would be underexposed while the preview seems properly exposed? What does the meter or the histogram show? Are you using AutoISO? Is EV at 0?
Maarten, in M the settings are f4, 1/60, ISO 400, EV is -3. The picture on the screen is underexposed, histogram is on the left. When I switch to S mode, all settings remain but the screen is brighter and the histogram moves slightly to the right. This is weird, it looks like the Z7 changes option d8 on its own when switching to S. d8 is still on “apply settings”, though.
@@MBSKanal The settings don't change between M and S? If the histogram is changing, something is different. And the meter reading (in manual there is no EV unless AutoISO is on) must also be changing. I don't think that d8 is implicated in this. When you switch from M to S, you give the camera control of the aperture, and it will adjust it, to the extent it can) to properly expose the image. If you are starting in M with three stops under exposed, changing to S means the camera will change the settings.
It seems that I need to keep holding the sub select (job sticker) or shutton button to hold the AE-L that is differnet from other Nikon DSLR. Is there on Z camera that I can lock AE by push button once? Thank
I thought all cameras had a 200 burst limit. My 70D does. I think it's because nobody would ever want more, and because it prevents you from finding your camera with a dead battery and a memory card filled with thousands of pictures of the inside of your bag, because some object happened to be pressed against the shutter button.
Oh, I thought only Nikon. Whatever, it's artificial and unnecessary. May I just ask how many times you've found your camera in your bag with 200 unwanted images? Would you put it away with the power on? I don't object to the setting, if that's what you want, but unlimited should be an option if I want.
I guess I would not knowingly put my camera away with the power still on (although it has happened inadvertently). But there are people who do this regularly. Tony Northrup has stated several times that he pretty much leaves the camera on all the time. The camera will of course enter sleep mode after a time, but he finds it quicker to wake up that way. And if he recommends it, I'm sure that at least some of his followers will do it as well. I don't worry much about the question - for my sake you could have as many in a burst as you like. But if it were possible to set it yourself, I think I'd prefer to set the limit at 200. But let me ask you, how many times have you taken more than 200 stills in a burst? Arthur Morris, the well-known award winning bird photographer, has sometimes in his lectures at B&H told about photographers who, when a bird was approaching, just held down the shutter button, BRRRRRRRRR etc. And he often felt tempted to say, "let's compare your 200 pictures with my 3. Who ever took the best shots wins all of the other's camera gear".
All valid points, always nice to have you participate in the discussion. While leaving the power on is a reasonable choice with a DSLR, it can be absolute power death for a mirrorless, which consumes much more power when on - however, most also have an auto shutoff.
Video is excellent. I'm never sure why crop is an issue for some. In my mind, I'd rather have the crop so that the image area used makes the mathematical conversion from the sensor to the size of the video (after all, 4K is only 3840x2160 pixels) easier and as a result better. The odd requirement that the full width (as obviously it won't be height) is used just makes the pixel binning and line skipping more difficult and artifacty. If that requires some small crop, so be it. Your artificial need for this requirement should not be allowed to over-ride quality, which I am certain is the manufacturer's first requirement.

Yes, thanks for understanding. One of the issues is that I can't see the dust on the screen as I'm shooting, only later while I'm editing. Still, it does bother me and I resolve to do better next time.
Thorough and well done as always. Loving my Z7. It’s even much better than I thought it would be once I start shooting with it. I’m very happy!

I have no idea the total number of things that you were born to do, but reviewing cameras is certainly on that list somewhere. Thanks for this!
I am still 110% happy with the state of Nikon DSLRs, but great to see their mirrorless world is going to be a winner.
How nice - to be recognized for an innate ability to review cameras - thanks for taking the time to comment.
Best review of this camera, so far😎
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks very much.
Many thanks for all your great work,
I appreciate your kind and capitalized words, thanks!
I hope you will enjoy your royalties, or at least bragging rights!
aerostar that will be amazing!!!
aerostar get rights on that idea!!! Get it fast!!!!
Not sure if that's possible, but certainly aerostar deserves some credit for raising this concept.
Maarten Heilbron you’re right
Fantastic presentation. I think it's the best one on RUclips ... and I think I've watched them all! Love the cadence and intonation as well.
Wow, what a pleasure to read your kind words, greatly appreciated.
If you are not a university professor you should be. Great review, enjoyable tone and very informative. Appreciate your hard work and impressive review
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for the comments.
Always my pleasure, and I do appreciate knowing that my videos are useful to my viewers. Thanks!
Im curious which you like out of those best for stills?
Thanks for the review, enjoyed watching. Thinking of upgrading from D750 and going 14-30mm for lightweight landscape delight!
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
I got the new 24-70 f.2.8 for my Z7 and updated to the auto eye focus and am quite happy. My DSLRs are in back of my equipment closet except for keeping the D700 handy as backup.
Sounds like you have an excellent strategy.
Love the video and your review of the camera. I found the comments and descriptions in one video. Thank you!
Always nice to hear from someone who appreciates my work, thanks for commenting.
I enjoy watching your videos all the time!
I appreciate that! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Merci pour cette excellente review, pour moi la meilleure du web. Vous mettez en avant les qualités et défauts du Nikon Z7, au delà du reviewer.
Merci pour vos paroles aimables et généreuses, elles sont appréciées.
Thanks Maarten that was very helpful. I'm hoping to buy a Z6 soon as the video seems a little bit better in that model. You provide a great start up guide it's invaluable the way you lay it out.
Thanks for taking the time to post your kind words, appreciated, I hope to have the Z6 for review early in 2019.
Excellent review but is there any chance of a quick overview for the Z6 II/Z7 II?
Nikon Canada doesn't have one to lend, so sadly, not now.
My respects and many thanks to you sir, you've earned a new subscript to your channel for one of the most comprehensive and detailed reviews I've seen so far of the Nikon Z7.
That's very kind of you to say, I appreciate the comments and the subscription, thanks!
Excellent in depth review, thank you Maarten- just picking one up now- no need for the Z7ii for my use in 2022
Always nice to hear from a photographer who's found my videos useful. Thanks for your kind words.
Great review. One of the most complete I've watched or read.
That's very kind, I do my best to be as detailed as required by the camera.
Thanks, Maarten, a very thorough overview. I presume most of what you covered will be the same for the Z6?
That's kind of you to say, thanks. I presume, but hope to be reviewing it in a few weeks.
I do appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment. I'll hopefully get to the Z6 early in 2019.
great video!
although iam watching since 2 weeks nonstop videos about the z6 and z7, i still dont know which one i shoul buy ...
Thanks, your kind words are appreciated. If you can't decide, take the Z6. You'll know if you need the resolution the Z7 offers.
Thanks!
Yes, that's possible. I would however, recommend a dedicated card reader for XQD or CFExpress.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks! Got it!
Thanks for detail review on z7 picture quality very sharp but have big confusion which one is the best like fujiflim xt3 or Sony A7lll
Does Camara is the key for good picture or need to spend money in glass I am just new in hobby
Yes, I appreciate the confusion. Hard to decide. Yes, lenses are an essential and crucial element to image quality, otherwise, the sensor can't provide the detail and quality it is capable of.
@@MaartenHeilbron
Thank you
Fantastic review as always. It would be great if you can test even Z6 at the earliest.
Thanks for the kind words. The Z6 is on the editorial calendar early in 2019.
Nice & Detailed review sir :) Do you have a link for the neck strap you are using ? coz the cloth material appears soft & comfy :)
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. The strap is from www.capturingcouture.com
An excellent comprehensive review. I was intending to wait for a Z7* upgrade and stick with my D3 and 4 other DSLs but may just buy this model.
Always nice to know my videos are useful, and thanks very much for the kind words.
Thanks you! what camera do you shoot your review videos with? Looks good :) Keep up the good work!
While the focus is slower than a D850, it is much faster than the XE1.
Thanks for your insight.
Impressive as always Maarten!
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!
The limitation to 200 shots is to save the shutter if the camera is stuck on release in a bag if still on.
Hi Maarten,
I looked through a z camera in a shop and found the EVF rather blue.
Thanks for detailed review. Wish I had Z7 as my travel companion.
BTW where is the terrace overlooking Wat Arun in Bangkok at 10:28?
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. That shot is taken from the restaurant in the Riva Arun hotel.
I see other reviewers mentioning that one negative thing about Z6 and Z7 is that is can be charged only when camera is OFF and not when camera is ON.
please confirm. thanks.
Yes, thanks, my mistake. It can be charged, not powered.
Maarten Heilbron thanks for answering I will check it out.
Always happy to help.
Hello Maarten,
Need some guidance,.
Love the pics of Angkor temples. ❤️
It was a great experience to visit and photograph around Siem Reap.
CF Express shares a form factor with XQD. The first CF Express cards just dropped.
@@darylnd Now I really don't understand the point you were try to make.
@@MaartenHeilbron My fault. I was trying to address Leonard's concern about XQD being obsoleted.
@@darylnd My turn to apologize, I didn't see the remark in context before replying.
Comprehensive as always, thanks!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Another Great Video Maarten!
Thanks kindly for your comments.
Great review as always Maarten, but i'm keeping my X-T2 (LOL).
That, in fact, is likely a recommendation I would make. If you have an X-T2, I would not recommend this as an upgrade.
@@MaartenHeilbron You recommended (thank you) the X-T2 and i'm very happy with it, i'm not even interested in the X-T3, maybe in the future i'll look at the X-T4.
Right, let's see what the future brings.
Yet another great video Maarten, looks a decent camera! But one question is it as good as the sony a73?
Thanks for your kind words. That's the two thousand dollar question. Well, the A73 has better burst and focus as well as a more full featured video mode.
Great in depth review. Thanks.
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!
Just sayin.
Hi Maarten:
I found your comparison of the Z6 and Z7. No need to respond to the question below.
Great, I was just about to post the link!
Thanks, a useful review.
Always nice to hear that my videos are appreciated, thanks!
Thanks for a very informative and in-depth overview.
I appreciate your very kind words.
I just sold Nikon D810. I have so many good nikon DSLR glass. At this point should I buy Nikon D850 or Z7
Why did you sell such a fine camera, particularly if you have a large lens collection? What is there about the Z7 that would make the investment in new lenses worthwhile?
@@MaartenHeilbron now since j have sold D810, should i go for D850?
@@Ebenzification It seems as if that would be a good choice, unless there's some aspect of the Z7 that you find more appealing.

Thanks Maarten. Would you care to comment: What are the practical benefits of the Z7 vs. the Z6?

I do have a video about that: ruclips.net/video/hXZzhdXQjW0/видео.html
In S mode the f4 is flashing, showing, that the camera can‘t expose the scene correctly. I‘d still expect the screen to show the actual exposure.
@@MBSKanal
The settings don't change between M and S? If the histogram is changing, something is different. And the meter reading (in manual there is no EV unless AutoISO is on) must also be changing. I don't think that d8 is implicated in this.
When you switch from M to S, you give the camera control of the aperture, and it will adjust it, to the extent it can) to properly expose the image. If you are starting in M with three stops under exposed, changing to S means the camera will change the settings.
@@MBSKanal When you take the photo, are they different between the modes?
It seems that I need to keep holding the sub select (job sticker) or shutton button to hold the AE-L that is differnet from other Nikon DSLR. Is there on Z camera that I can lock AE by push button once? Thank
That's the default, it can be assigned to other keys, like the two function keys on the front.
Great as always
It's very kind of you to say, thanks!
How is the video performance in z7?
Is it crop or full frame on video?
Video is excellent.
I'm never sure why crop is an issue for some. In my mind, I'd rather have the crop so that the image area used makes the mathematical conversion from the sensor to the size of the video (after all, 4K is only 3840x2160 pixels) easier and as a result better. The odd requirement that the full width (as obviously it won't be height) is used just makes the pixel binning and line skipping more difficult and artifacty.
If that requires some small crop, so be it.
Your artificial need for this requirement should not be allowed to over-ride quality, which I am certain is the manufacturer's first requirement.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you for your information.
I was shooting with sony a6400 i sell that camera.
I am looking for a good mirrorless camera do you think Nikon z7 is worth it and future proof?
@@sudipbholon8220 I can't predict the future - that will depend on if/when the Z8 appears and the features it includes and whether you feel they might be essential. Why are you dis-satisfied with the A6400? How do you feel the Z7 will improve your abilities?
@@MaartenHeilbron because it has not IBIS and i want to move with full frame camera.
In your opinion which camera should i buy?
Some people said nikon z7 has not good AF so i am confused should i get it or not?
@@sudipbholon8220 I think the Z7 is an excellent choice. It's AF isn't the best on the planet, but it's very good, and improving with the latest firmware updates.
Which one do you prefer, this or the X-t3? I have the Z7 so its my preference but i would like a little"sports" shooter so im thinking to get the x-t3 also?
I liked them both - if I owned a Z7 and was thinking about the X-T3, I would add it only for video purposes.
I want camera display to cell phone but not any control's in nikon z7. Plz give me sum suggestions
Have you tried Nikon's Snapbridge app? ruclips.net/video/aoNMhmLOaQ0/видео.html
@@MaartenHeilbron I like this aap but, I need only display.
@@vipinprajapati1230 No further suggestions.
Danke 🙏
Gern geschehen
Waooohh that's awesome.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words.
Apparently Dpreview discovered that videos are better in Z6 than Z7...
Very detailed review, by the way.
Yes, I found that an interesting note also. I'm hoping to get to the Z6 early in 2019.
As always, nice to see your avatar in my comments, and to read your kind words, thanks!
It says not sponsored yet we are told Nikon lent two lenses'...
Not sponsored means I have not accepted payment, either in cash or goods in exchange for my work. The lenses (and cameras) are on loan for the review period and returned to Nikon Canada afterwards. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
We should took photos in auto white balance...It is difficult to get in Kelvin...This is Nikon tragedy from 810...
I'm afraid your message is too cryptic for me to decode.
@@MaartenHeilbron...My question is how to white balance...My photos are in jpegs...I will took photos in portrait mode..I will correct Britness .Contrast sharp.. Saturation..In portrait mode ..Then come to white balance...kelvin
.Then go to white balance fine tuning...Blue..Amber..Green ..Magenta...And set it as my wish...Is this facility available in this camera? This is my question...
@@nobimathew9092 I see. How's the explanation I provide at 14:40 in this video?
I throw away the booklet, you are better and more fun. Thanks
I appreciate your kind words, thanks! The booklet's pretty useful if you're having trouble falling asleep though.
hahahaha

So my plan for a career in standup could still work?
1:55 a toothbrush could've clean the camera better
In spite of my best efforts - I do use compressed air and a toothbrush as required, the resolution of 4K does expose every little bit of dust.
@@MaartenHeilbron these digital equipment loves dust very much hahaha
Yes, thanks for understanding. One of the issues is that I can't see the dust on the screen as I'm shooting, only later while I'm editing. Still, it does bother me and I resolve to do better next time.
@@MaartenHeilbron ah... im not that nitpicking, this video is great. A bit of dust doesn't bother me.
Understood, bothers me though - thanks for the chat.
Too complicated...hold my phone
Hehe. Actually, just complicated enough. And in fact, I find phones much more complicated.
Disliked for saying Zed.
A bit harsh in my opinion. Consider that among the English speaking people on the planet, you may be in the minority.
@@MaartenHeilbron I may be, but Nikon said it is called the Z7 (pronounced Zee)
Oh and I am an English speaking person, and I've only head Zed used when I learned French. And from French speaking Canadians.
Oh, you've led a sheltered life.
Do you pronounce it Neye-con or Nee-con? Purists seem to prefer the latter. Just saying'
