So I’ve got a 58 plate. Did exactly this. All 4 relays, 5,6,7,8 had corrosion on the relay faces. Relay 7 was the one that stopped the ignition. Started earth cable was crusty as well so I stuck another one on however this didn’t let the engine start. It was relay 7. Thanks for the video. Good luck everyone
Thanks for the feedback. Most of the time its relay 5,7,8 that cause issues with 7 being the cause, best to replace them all as Mercedes updated the relays with a superseded version as well. There are several more worth checking as well = Relay 1, 2 & 3
I had this issue and it took me forever to figure out as it was so intermittent. Wish I had found this video back before I solved it. Great video for what looks to be a common issue, with next to no material out there identifying the cause.
I just had a similar problem with mine. I discovered that the starter relay fuse was blowing when I turned the key. Tracked all the wires back to the starter and finally when I got to the starter I found the heat shield loose and making contact with the terminal. Shorting it out. I got lucky it was an easy fix!
Liked and subscribed. Great video. Cliffs notes version : random faulty relays cause vehicle not to start. Replace all the relays. Check earth strap between engine - chassy - battery : clean contact points between earth straps. Shows location of relays adjacent fuse box. This is a common problem across many vehicles so one to keep in mind when intermittent start problems emerge
Great video! I changed the relays on our 2011 (on drivers side) and found the old gray ones to have corrosion. I have had this issue off and on for 5 years and always assumed it was the battery.
Thanks very much that gives me something to work with. The dealer had a shot at diagnosing the problem before I bought the van, according to the previous owner. We have had the van for a few years and this comes up every once in a while and I think it’s more frequent in the winter.
Thanks for that. This is an interment fault, can have at the worst possible time (on a long trip away from home) so I would suggest following the video and replacing the items shown.
A faulty park neutral switch was problem in our 2017 Mercedes Sprinter (2018 Pleasure Way). It was never diagnosed correctly by Mercedes dealers until I found the dealership in Rocklin California. They fixed it under warranty and we have never had this problem again.
Would it make sense to spray electrical contact cleaner into the female side of the relay to clean any corrosion there also so that the new relays aren't being plugged into a corroded socket. This can happen when people maybe are inhabiting the van in moist conditions without proper ventilation and heating and cold conditions condensation occurs on the electrical parts and that's bad.
Yes your correct, you could clean the relays but as this is a starting issue I would personally always opt to use the new replacement relays. Last thing ppl want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Hey, Man. I will try to replace those relays. My MB 313 CDI have some serious starting issues - it cranks with effort and every third or fourth time, doesn't start. We repaired the injectors, repaired starter motor, changed crank shaft and cam shaft sensors, changed that mass wire and new battery and nothing changed. And it doesn't even matter if the engine is cold or warm - it just wont start. It's real pain in the a**.

Check or replace your glow plugs and test the circuit for any voltage drop. I would start there. Also worth scanning the vehicle to check for any fault codes.

Are the Relais interchangeable? Or ist? Different Relais for different function?
Yes Only the ones with the same part number are interchangeable.
Once you pull off the ground cable and relays does the van need to be updated using MB software or anything?
Nope. Just ensure the ignition is off while completing the work.
