    You can fix an overheating transmission pretty easily by manually downshifting. Usually the cause of overheating is excessive torque converter slippage from being in too high of a gear for the conditions. The car is not smart enough to know that you're driving uphill with a trailer in strong winds for several minutes at a time. It unlocks the converter guessing that the extra power and torque requirement will be brief and momentary. Downshifting out of a higher gear usually provokes the torque converter to lock more readily, and eliminates the slip that causes overheating of the fluid. Even if the torque converter doesn't lock, downshifting still provides a mechanical gear reduction that reduces the need for slippage and reduced slippage will mean reduced heat buildup. Wehn you make the same power in a lower gear / higher rpm, the transmission has to cope with less torque transmission than in a higher gear / lower rpm, which can help a little bit, even if full lock is not an option because of speed or mechanical/electrical shortcomings in the torque converter lock schedule.

    Keep the truck running it just explodes the heats got nowhere to go when they always run your truck when it’s hot you can imagine it was 280 with all that wind going through it and then all of a sudden there’s nothing and you turn the heat off always leave the truck running best way

    What a great series you have going here. You must have been so excited to see your family. Thanks for being prepared and getting that 3rd party monitor hooked up to audit the transmission temperature. Good planning. How has the air conditioning been working out during the trip so far? Might be interesting to see how much better the fuel economy can get between fill ups with the air off. Maybe if it cools down a bit more it might another good data point to audit. Thank you again for posting your journey. Always look forward to your next segment! Gratefully.

      Thank you! Super excited to see my family and to be over with the trip because it was getting quite exhausting. As far as the air conditioning goes it seemed to do well through the whole trip. I would turn it off though when the transmission was getting warm or hotter as well as before large hills that would tax the transmission heavily. The fuel would be more efficient if the AC was turned off for sure but there is no way you would make it with the heat outside. hottest was 101 in Idaho of all places.

If you are getting an AWD model then it will have the upgraded cooler and I will give my opinions in my upcoming video on why I think I had higher temps and my recommendations if you need one or not. 84 to be exact. 😁 If you have not watched all my videos then you must have missed why. I knew all the specs before my trip. This was done to push the truck to the limits because everyone will be going faster than 55mph while towing and some people will be going over 80mph. When your on the open road and all you see in front of you is the curvature of the earth you want to finish as quickly as possible. 😂 not everyone will go this fast but many people will. I did this video so others don’t have to but can still gain the knowledge.

      @YuriyMotso  3 года назад +4

      The Honda Ridgeline fwd models is fitted with an entry level cooler as its limited to 3500lbs. Not really designed for towing.
      The AWD models have an upgraded transmission cooler to support the 5000lb capacity.
      There are aftermarket coolers. which you can install that can increase your cooling if you wanted to.
      The Honda alert goes off when the transmission hits 300 degrees. You want to keep the transmission temp as low as possible.
      A normal transmission temp is 175-190 degrees but with overheating, it could rise to over 240 degrees. This then leads to hardening of seals, and they soon start to melt slowly. At 260 degrees, your plates will slip, and any further increase in temperature leads to clutch burn out, and your transmission fluid will form carbon.

    Man I have been researching what truck to buy for months now and the Ridgeline seems almost perfect. Except every video I see of people using it for actual truck stuff be it towing or mild off roading the trans always seems to overheat. I think it would be a badass truck especially with the 2021 redesign making it look like a actual truck. But it seems when you need it to do real truck things it just dosnt hold up. It’s so close to being something special tho! So close! I think if it was priced better it would be more compelling personally. Honda rarely does any rebates or incentives and I got a quote on a Ridgeline the other day and it came to almost identically priced to a 1/2 ton truck, specifically a new Silverado. Again the Ridgeline is so close to being a top contender

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 года назад +5

      So I personally said I would never buy a Ridgeline. And well I got a Ridgeline. 🤣
      Here’s my story. Toyota Tacoma guy for many years but one day I was about to get a gen 3 and o decided to test the competition to make sure I’m getting the best truck. I drove everything and left the Honda for last as I had no hope for it. The moment I got in even before I drove it my mind changed immediately.
      I then took a real approach to the way I will need to use the truck and no truck on the market came close to my needs at that time 2018.
      Best seating position - ✅
      Best fuel economy - ✅
      At the time highest HP - ✅
      Quietest cabin - ✅
      Better than Tacoma for second row seating children - ✅ (haven’t really researched the others)
      Safety features galore - ✅
      In bed trunk - ✅
      Do not need premium fuel - ✅
      I personally realized I will not be going off road much if ever and I will not be towing anything heavy other than this trip across the US. So for me this is how I came to the conclusion that the Ridgeline is best for my family.
      Just make sure your buying the truck that fits you and not someone else.

    • @mattdagger1480
      @mattdagger1480 3 года назад +1

      @@YuriyMotso yea I totally understand It is almost everything I’d ever need. I’m active duty military tho and would have to tow probably 5-8000lbs every couple years to my new base. After seeing it overheat with just 4800 it’s a dealbreaker for me personally. It’s so close to being perfect. It’s priced pretty high tho considering you can get a 1/2 ton for the same price or even less with way more space and capacity. So it’s a hard sell to me personally. I do absolutely love it. There’s just some hard deal breakers for my life sadly. I love that bed tho 😫

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 года назад +2

      There are two cooler sizes on the Ridgeline. The AWD models like mike have an upgraded cooler. The problem is not so much with the cooler but that I really pushed the truck to its limits with an oversized trailer and high speeds with cruise control. This was a simulation of what people would realistically do with their vehicles and so I replicated these high speeds and cruise in order to inform people on how the Honda would react under those conditions.

    Were you manually shifting to 4th when you were running hot or just letting the truck pick the gear?

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 года назад +1

      for the purpose of this trip I had it on cruise control up until the first overheat and then after that I controlled the throttle the entire trip. I would have done the entire trip in cruise control if it never had an issue but I really wanted to know what the truck was capable of. Reason is someone out there will drive their honda and forget to take their ridgeline off cruise while ascending a hill. So I heavily recommend that people switch over to either manual control throttle or you can use the d4 if you don't have the 9 speed to reduce the gear hunting of the transmission.

  • @stephenburgess3270
    @stephenburgess3270 4 года назад

    Did you have an ATF transmission cooler installed before the trip? We have a 2019 Honda Pilot Elite 4WD with a 9 speed transmission. It can tow 3500 pounds without the ATF and 5000 pounds with the ATF. It does not come with the ATF from the factory; something they fail to mention when you buy it. Dude, word to the wise: if you need to really tow, get an F-350. Not a Honda. btw; I'm getting my ridgeline next month if things align.

      Luckily I don’t need to tow. This was an opportunity to make a great RUclips video about Honda’s capabilities pushed to the edge. This is the most work it will ever see.

    Honda automatics are very weak. I wouldn’t ever consider towing with one.

      I was skeptical and worried at first however happy with the outcome and from the services I have done it seems to be all good so far.

    I get a lot of crap for saying the Ridgeline looks dumb but in the end I’m not driving a cut off Honda Pilot to go pick up some lady’s. I’m taking a real truck

      That fine. Its not for everyone. I personally think the Gen 1 ridgeline looks ugly and never thought I would buy a ridgeline but here I am. :) Driving one made me change my mind. If you go and really test it unbiased like I did as I was a hard core tacoma guy then you can appreciate it for what it was designed for and would probably enjoy driving it. I now consider this a real truck after doing this long trip. it held up to the expectation and did very well for the demand IMO. Thanks for watching the video though! I would get a Raptor if I could afford the fuel. XD

      If you need a truck to pick up a lady you are doing it wrong. If you need a truck to haul your lady you are definitely picking wrong.

      Why does a Honda ridgeline upsets you? Do you have some insecurities to your manliness that a unibody truck upsets you?

    I have the same truck and i only tow my 18 feet boat once or twice a month and just for 20 miles lol
