I saw the Dead a bunch of times. Woke up in strange cities. Collected miracles to keep going. Traded poetry for grilled cheese in the parking lots. Blocked undercovers in drug rugs from catching the "bad" guys. The whole 9 yards. I'm not actually sure Jerrybear didn't give Billy a bit MORE than lessons or advice when I see stuff like this. Goosebumps. I remember my tribe. And im dead family forever. I get my water from one well and this is it. Wow. Just wow.
I began following Garcia & the Grateful Dead at the end of 1977. Garcia would love this, especially the reminiscing of the Acid Tests....When Jerry passed on, there was nothing that could ever take his place but this brilliant shining star called Billy Strings has brought a missing spark back to the esoteric level of the band. Bravo! 🙌🌹⚡️
Tom Hamilton is also absolutely killing it on guitar... Look up the bands "Joe Russo's Almost Dead" (JRAD) and "Billy & The Kids" (especially when Billy Strings plays with them)... JRAD sometimes goes into very similar psychedelic breakdowns between songs.
@@jessewoody5772 see my above comment about Tom Hamilton. He & Billy Strings are both more suited for Dead music. Not bashing John Mayer, as he's certainly talented and has done the music justice. Dead & Co's final tour is this year so we need to move on from that. Honestly I've not been seeing Dead & Co the past couple years because they have been playing everything in slow motion. I wanna dance like crazy at Dead shows, but Dead & Co seems more suitable for slow dancing anymore. That being said I may catch a few shows this year simply to show my appreciation for the original members. Bill Kreutzmann still has it (and is the "Billy" in Billy & The Kids). So does Phil, but it's obvious why he's off doing his own thing.
@@bumblebootwiddletoes5185 I agree that Billy Strings wears a more Dead "hat" than John Mayer but....I was impressed by Johns own admittance of dealing with his collosal EGO and reighning it all in. When he said in an interview that being where Jerry once stood is the First time in his life "he felt like a member of a band" is telling of his self awareness and intelligence. And then he became a total student of The Dead and his virtuosity shown. Now, I agree with you that Billy strings is more of a match because he seems of a similar ilk as Jerry, kind of like a savant where as John is more of a virtuoso. I Think...... Both have gotten me to binge nothing but them for days at a time. Then I go listen to something like Roxy Music live version of Neil Youngs Like A Hurricane to cleanse my palette.
Billy is at the vanguard of players, all former child prodigies including Taz,Kingfish,Molly Tuttle, Marcus King that are crisscrossing genres and refusing to play the pop music game. They follow in the footsteps of Derek Trucks and assure us that this approach to music is safe for the coming decades.
Mikaela Davis is also holding it down on harp (as is Joanna Newsom, if you're into that type of genre-bending folk music... Hint: if you enjoy psychedelics put on her 2006 album *_Ys_* when you start peaking... 😉🤗🤯🙂)
The closest I can come to explaining how this makes me feel is.....I want to walk into the wilderness and spend hours listening to this magic and staring into a fire. Lay on my back and watch the stars move across the sky. They blow my mind.
This kid continues to boggle my mind every single day when I put his tunes on. No doubt he will end up one of the best as time goes on. He’s already there in the minds of the ones who know music
This is about as honest and real as it comes, I feel Billy catches the spirt of the Dead without replacing what made the Dead. Respectfully the evolution of the music without trying. I am hooked!!!!
just had my first listen of billy about a week ago- about 20 hrs of listening in 3 or 4 days , this guy is the new muse- wise beyond his years way beyond and massively talented. i feel blessed to have crossed his path. i'm not gonna stop listening that's what a show should be like- mind expanding without any help from anything else 'cept the music and the muse
This was the best week of music in a LONG TIME!! Billy Strings covers Planet Caravan?! Like, WHAAAAATT!!! They were AMAZING live!!! Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves for the summer!!! Not to mention that the rendition of "Meet Me At The Creek" they played right after this mix was 18 minutes long!!!
If he had played this after that great Wharf Rat he did in Columbia SC on Easter Sunday I would have totally lost my shit which I kinda did anyway. of all the bands that try to cover the Dead, his covers seem the most honest and true. he gets it.
While they were playing wharf rat, when they sang "I'll get up and fly away" I looked up and there was a jet like a dot in the sky flying overhead leaving a streak across the blue, was quite badass
Every once in a blue moon a magical being emerges. Jerry, Jimi, Jorma, Kurt, so many amazing and gifted souls beyond the brain chemistry of standard human. Billy is one of those people. He is reincarnate of all we believe and guides us spiritually towards ultimate evolution and divine enlightenment
Kurt was not a "magical being." What a joke ... he might be the most overrated musician ever. If he hadn't blown his brains out he'd never have been considered a "legend" like he is now & his junkie ass would've flamed out like most junkies do.

I was there too on Sunday, best show Mobile has seen in ages!! This set blew my mind all over that field, Never miss a Sunday show!! I was teleported into the magical land of Billy Goats. We love you BMFS!!

What about John Mayer?
He has really embraced the music of the Dead.
Both are absolute talents.
I agree. He is the only one who seems to really get it. I have been listening to the GD, JGB, and the JGAB almost daily since 1979.

My mind was blown wide open during that Planet Caravan
Lol can say that again 🌟⚡️🌟
Me too
Took me like three notes. Fave Sabbath song of all!! 🤘
What is Planet Caravan? Or should I say who’s tune is it?
@@MrHilljohntimothy TBH I thought it was a Pantera tune until a friend told me it was a Sabbath track.
