There is a black glue in this video known as cutback adhesive. It can contain asbestos and you should not grind or sand this glue. I simply left the glue alone and did not disturb it at all. Therefore it remained a safe environment to work in.
WARNING: Do not sand, dry scrape, beadblast or mechanically chip or pulverize existing resilient flooring, backing, lining felt, asphaltic
“cutback” adhesive or other adhesive. These products may contain asbestos fibers and/or crystalline silica. Avoid creating dust. Inhalation
of such dust is a cancer and respiratory tract hazard. Smoking by individuals exposed to asbestos fibers greatly increases the risk of serious
bodily harm. Unless positively certain that the product is a non-asbestos-containing material, you must presume it contains asbestos.
Regulations may require that the material be tested to determine asbestos content. RFCI’s Recommended Work Practices for Removal of
Resilient Floor Coverings are a defined set of instructions addressed to the task of removing all resilient floor covering structures. These
instructions should be consulted with each installation. Hope this helps you understand how to be safe with this glue.

It is not necessary if your plank already has an attached pad. If you have a strong locking system, then and only then would I add an additional pad. I only use quiet walk.

Thanks for the video and technique. Really learned a lot. I'm trying to put down this Mohawk vinyl plank in a travel trailer that I'm building. As I see how you didn't use any underpads, I also heard others saying that you'd always want an underpad since the thin layer on the plank is not enough for sound dampening or as a vapor barrier. What are your thoughts about it?

Excellent videos. In the 80’s we did the exact same thing with the “ cheater tile “ but the vinyl flooring was only 12” squares and a sticky back. I’ve never done vinyl planking and always wondered how you lock in both sides (width and length) of the plank at the same time. You sir taught an old dog a new trick. It’s refreshing to see someone that actually knows what they’re doing. For that I thank you.

Great video. I wish I had the same luck you did. I bought the Misty Harbor Mohawk VPF from Costco. It's a really good looking floor. But, installation was very hard. The starter row went fine. But I found out on the next row why it went so easy. It was because I could lift and snap the flooring joints together. When I went to lay the second row, the instructions said line up the long joint first and the use a block to tap the joints home. Well there was no tap about it. I had to beat the crap out of them to get them to join together. I looked and re-looked at the instructions to see what I was doing wrong. After about 3 rows I finally started spraying the joints with silicone spray to get them to slid together. I eventually won and the floor look great, but no easy task to be sure.

Hi thank you for such an informative video! I'm trying to work up the courage to do my own floor. Questions: 1) Why did you remove the baseboards if you can simply use the oscillating tool to trim underneath and insert the LVP? 2) If I lay LVP over my kitchen ceramic tiles, do I need to remove all the toe kicks as well?

    • @Tonyhouse1168
      @Tonyhouse1168 2 года назад +2

He used the oscillating tool to cut the bottom of the door jamb and fit the tile underneath. We remove the baseboards and toe kicks bc there’s a zero percent chance all the walls in a house are exactly straight and 90 degrees so there’s always a gap between the tiles and wall. And you need the gap; tiles expand and contract with changes in temperature and moisture levels (hence why it’s called a floating floor). The gap makes sure you’re not crunching the tiles together when they expand.

@24:12.... that cheater board can also be your best friend on engineered wide plank wood flooring. It's the very same idea, and works like a charm.

I used it to sprinkle the floor to take away the stickiness. It is used for floor prep to fill dips and cracks.

AEJ, its soooo much easier that you could imagine. I was quite intimidated as well when i tackled my first floor install. That was in the kitchen of my old home about 10 to 12 years ago. Since then i have installed approx 150 more of them on my own. I was a tech tard and RUclips was still a baby back then so i made soooo many little mistakes on my 1st two or three installs. That leads me to my best and only advice: The two best choices you can make are simple. 1) Purchase a quality flooring product. Dont skimp on quality because you see the price tag and get "sticker shock" and assume the cheap stuff will "do the trick". Not only do you get what you pay for but the higher quality options are often times easier to work with. 2) IF you hit a snag, get into a pinch, get frustrated and you're flat out ready to give up...DONT...Just hop on RUclips and this fella will likely have the video on the topic thats holding you up. AGAIN pal, its easier than it appears and you CAN do it! Best of luck and God bless ya brother :-)

I think the other side of the plank makes for a better scribing edge on the cheater board. Gives a little more expansion gap and won't run into tight fit issues as much.

You always recommend the underlayment QUIET WALK, but I noticed with the COSTCO Mohawk product you aren't using any. Is it not needed with the mohawk product?

I'm just starting renovating my downstair's bathroom. The bottom of the walls are soaked over many years and rotten and falls apart. I choose not to replace the gyproc because I think there will be no end to it. Instead, I'm putting on 5' 7/8'"s baseboards with adhesive back plus filler, where I can, and an extra baseboard on top of the adhesive 5 7/8's baseboards. I think I can get away with that. And after 3 coats of kitchen and bath paint
I'm putting in a new toilet over top my vinyl flooring. Must carve out my flooring in a semicircle to allow for the toilet drain pipe.
I've found that the previous owner was no more a talented DYI'er than I am.
My vinyl is not glued on back. Do I glue it on top of my linolium or drill cement screws? What glue? I cannot paint much more because it's winter here in Alberta.
I'm doing it all as cheaply as possible and as I'm able financially and in summer.

I have this same exact plank to lay this weekend. I've only done it one other time. This guy has a rental and he's letting me start in a sm bedroom & if that works, he'll keep paying me to do a couple rooms that are 300+sq ft.
Nice tips. I think I'll be making momney.

Using a scrap piece to tap the panels, saves the tongue.. I'm always worried that I'm going to break a piece with a block.

Do u like to use a table saw for rips and l cuts instead of using a torch. I think it's faster, I use my battery powered dewalt table saw and also dewalt jigsaw, osciator and I have a laminate cutter too that I use for thicker vinyl or laminate and to make those 2 inch long cuts or under. Good video. Reminds me of being at work lol I scribe just like you do. I mirror one board on top of another and then pul it back the width of the tounge and then my cheater board doesn't need the tounge cut off the use for a scribe board, I can just use any board to scribe, happy flooring!
