Definitely one of the most remarkable bands of the eightees. Mark Hollis was one of the most creative composers and wrote some of the best and deepest lyrics in pop music's history.
I have been on a Talk Talk binge for the last week and it has really soothed my soul and comforted me through a trying time. He is with us forever now.
Right now i`m delving into the book "a perfect silence" which describes Mark`s life & biography within the band & recording sessions. - He was an absolute perfectionist regarding the outcome of his work but also quite challenging to work with (nuff said). All their albums have something very unique and special to me and keep telling a story - I treat them like a good wine and often only (open) listen to them in the springtime - (Talk Talk albums, specially the last 3 unfold themselves around that time at it`s best).
A person can appreciate both. Different things speak to different people. It doesn't need to speak to you, and it isn't bad if it's not your personal taste.
Talk Talk was for the non trendy, non basic minded music lovers. Mark Hollis's influences were people like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Next level music! Not the basic minded people.

Was introduced to Talk Talk via MTV around 82' and was a big fan up until "The Colour of Spring" album in 86', then the band all but disappeared from the airwaves. In 90' the greatest hits was released and I became reacquainted with their music. A track called "Spirit" really caught my attention as I had never heard the "Spirit of Eden" album before; I really wasn't aware if Talk Talk were even a functioning band at that point, but they were. Great music is timeless and this music transcends time and space.
...Phil Brown - the engineer for those last albums said they almost killed him - his book Are We Still Rolling covers it. Not rock and roll excesses I might add, rather the intense perfectionism...
The song you refer to is not called Spirit, it's actually 'I Believe In You'. Written about his brother Ed,who was struggling with a heroin addiction, and sadly passed away two years after the song was written!
