Not sure of the material type - I have the double layer model that's rated for 250lbs I believe, and it's always felt good. It's thick enough to keep mosquitoes off of me, and doesn't stretch enough to let them get at me (one of my other camping hammocks does, wop wah).
I've spotted it while setting up sometimes, but never had any get me or be a problem. There's Virginia Creeper where I live too, so I keep an eye open when I'm setting up to make sure. If it's something you deal with, I can imagine using longer straps and maybe gloves when setting it up.
