This mix celebrates Brent Mydland’s arrival on “Shakedown Street” in 1979 and the particularly excellent “disco Dead” that resulted. 1979 is arguably the most deeply funky year for “Shakedown Street,” early Brent being exactly what the song - and the rest of the band - had been waiting for. Huh. As far as I concerned, Brent’s arrival heralded the second, sucky half of the Grateful Dead’s long strange trip….
8/13/79 (the first one) is probably one of my all time favorites. Jerry’s solo in the middle is incredible
10/31/79 is a strange but awesome jam.

In 78 they would just do a vocal diminuendo and fade Shakedown out. But in 79 they added that reprise at the end and that just really hits it on home. Wow! thanks so much!

Wow, those two versions from November are like 4 days apart and the tempo difference is astounding. I guess they were just looking for the right groove. It's a wild contrast on what were likely back to back versions. Gotta love their willingness to experiment.
