    I am 5'11" , but I bought a size 1 because I always sleep on my side in a fetal position. I have never been able to fall asleep on my back, so I was happy with the smaller one. I wasn't going to use a tent stove with it either. Not because it isn't a good idea, but because I would just worry about it. Fortunately my deerhound lurcher normally sleeps on top of me to keep me warm.

    Great video! Considering getting a lavvuu but like everyone, what size? You are the only person I’ve seen who points out that the thickness of your sleeping mat will make a difference as to how close your feet and head are to touching the interior of the tent due to the sloping sides. Well done. You have this American’s subscription. 🇺🇸

    If you used size one and three together as a standard kit, it would create a double wall Lavvu; greatly increasing thermal properties from the air pocket between layers. Thank you for showing this layered profile shot. Size one and two are rather negligible in size difference; you wonder why option two was ever created. I personally think the Lavvu should have had the option for detachable walls, similar to a pavilion or bell tent. I would be curious to know how layering size one and three or size two and three together makes a difference in retaining warmth.

    Hi! Good video. I like this tent also. Sligh note. In polish we don't have and use that word: lavvu ;-). We speak Polish for it: pałatka (read: p.a.w.a.t.k.a, better check the pronunciation of a word on translator) Lavvu.. is a Sami tent, a kind of tipi, lower tipi, more resistant to strong wind and this is a word from the Sami language (Scandinavian Lapland). Funny journey of words, verbal/naming mess. We (Polish people) made the military raincoat which is called "pałatka" (two are made into a tent), and there is a word for it in English: tipi, tepee but almost everyone calls it: "lavvu" - Sams tent. So the name "polish lavuu" give's U polish sams tipi/tent ;-)

    • @WildCampingNI
      @WildCampingNI  3 года назад

      Yes! It’s a joke I make in the English community regularly! I always say the polish “lavvu” isn’t even a lavvu. 😂. Problem is the English speaking community has adopted this name and if I used plash palakta no one would know what I mean! I’ve tried persuading the community of this but lavvu has stuck for now 😅
      Thanks for the very informative comment.

    This implications of your video are far more intelligent, and based on geometry, than I realised at first. These lavvus are sized according to the height of the soldier, but the end result when you tent them up is a bit more significant than I appreciated. It also made me realise that maybe pegging them out slightly differently could buy me a bit more head room. Its funny to think that a lavvu that is only a few inches bigger can end up making a footprint that is nearly a foot wider.

    Thankyou. Appreciated that, as I'm 5ft 6, I was hoping to buy the size 2, but Militarymart only have size 1 left. So I'm wondering whether I can get away with a size 1. Everyone on RUclips tends to have a size 2. But people don't seem to factor in the fact that when lying down your head will be close to or touching the canvas. I just want to be sure that the size 1 will have adequate room for my height prostrate. Any ideas please? Thanks Stuart

    • @WildCampingNI
      @WildCampingNI  3 года назад +2

      Stuart, you are grand a 5ft6. A size 1 has a diameter of 190cm so even with the drop off you should be more than fine.
      In the next few months I hope to make a hints abs tips video which show some ways to maximise your useable space. But spoiler you can change the centre pole for a bipod and this means you can lie in the widest part of the tent.

      This is an army surplus tent, called a polish lavvu or plash palakta. They are becoming very hard to get unfortunately. And the ones that are available is becoming quite expensive.
      Army surplus shops, eBay etc are the best places to find them.

    Hey mate. How much is the weight difference between the different sizes? I'm only after using a half shelter (not a full tent) and was wondering what the weight is of one section? Cheers!

    • @WildCampingNI
      @WildCampingNI  3 года назад +1

      Each half is approx 1.5kg slightly less for a size 1 slightly more for a size 3 so varies from 3kg - 3.5kg with poles roughly

    Good comparison video. I've just bought the Size 1 and am 5'8" tall. I"ve noticed that my tips of toes just about touch the canvas when lying down. I shuffled back a tiny but but head was then quite near the tent! Although it's an inch or two bigger in diameter, I'm thinking the Size 2 night be better for me. However, the Size 3 looks lovely and roomy for a winter's night! Any thoughts? Thanks - Ben

    • @WildCampingNI
      @WildCampingNI  3 года назад +1

      You nailed it Ben, size one in my opinion is hard to use. The size two you will notice an immense difference for sure.
      The size three is hard to get hold of as it’s quite rare. But Military Mart is in the final stages of a replica size three. It’s looking good so I’d wait for that if you are wanting a size three

      @@WildCampingNI - My Size 2 arrived today. What’s interesting is that the Size 1 that I returned was 1977 issue. The Size 2 has 2003 tags on the ponchos which I was quite surprised about. Didn’t know the Polish factories were still manufacturing the Lavvu in the early 2000s. Do you think there’s much difference? Someone said the 2003 versions might have thinner canvas maybe… 🤔

    • @WildCampingNI
      @WildCampingNI  3 года назад +1

      I’m Mark Morrow on Lavvu Owners world wide, it was me who said that!
      Yes the newer are almost always thinner material. Having said that they are usually still waterproof as the factory waterproofing has not wore off.
      Not sure if they were ever issued but as far as I’m concerned it is still surplus.

      @@WildCampingNI Hi Mark. Thanks for that and funny that you’re the same person! I was keen to get an older Size 2 but I think with the military surplus stores it’s a bit pot luck in what you get. I got my 2003 one from Military Mart. I would have preferred an older thicker one - for that retro feel - but just the way it goes I guess.
