+Dylan Stephens The most annoying thing ever, especially because it happens so damn often. They really should've made it so the wind doesn't stop them from singing.
Apparently these guys can see the future, since no Europeans had a confirmed visit to Hawaii until 1779 and this game takes place in the 1760s, I’m pretty sure.
@EJ H Well come to think of it your right. Steam ships were in use, but they weren't used for exploration missions. This song talks about explorers from Antarctica coming to old Maui a place in Hawaii. Makes more sense, I understand now.
@@mitchellbutarch8347 Hol' up, the song goes "for six hellish months we've passed away on the cold Kamchatka sea" corrects me if I'm wrong, but the Kamchatka penisula is a part of Russia, the eastern most point and therefor the kamchatka sea should be there, right?
Just playing this game for the first time ever while beating most AC games this quarantine for the first time in general..gotta say i was sceptical due to all the hate i saw towards it but its turning into one of my absolute favorite AC games...i also wish black flag ran as smooth as this one on my pc but cant win em all xd
Half the people are like yeah pirates and then the other is hell yeah artic explorers. The shanty is about Whalermen - men who hunt/fish for whales. Not booty seaking pirates or Ernest Shackleton. Look up northwest passage, there's you a artic explorer shanty if ya want one.
It's a damn tough life, full of toil and strife, we whalermen undergo, And we won't give a damn when the gales are done how hard the winds did blow, For we're homeward bound from the Arctic grounds with a good ship taut and free, And we won't give a damn when we drink our rum with the girls from old Maui.
CHORUS: Rolling down to old Maui, me boys, rolling down to old Maui, We're homeward bound from the Arctic grounds, rolling down to old Maui. Once more we sail with the northerly gales through the ice and wind and rain, Them coconut fronds, them tropical shores, we soon shall see again; Six hellish months we've passed away on the cold Kamchatka sea, But now we're bound from the Arctic grounds, rolling down to old Maui. Once more we sail with the Northerly gales, towards our island home, Our whaling done, our mainmast sprung, and we ain't got far to roam; Our stuns'l's bones is carried away, what care we for that sound, A living gale is after us, thank God we're homeward bound.
@@Captain8492 note some might consider carried away as getting damaged or broken off but there's another possibility due to the wording being ambiguous where Stunsl's (stunsail) bones is more accurately studding sails and Boom. The studding sail are light sails set outside the square sails, on booms rigged out for that purpose. And they are only carried with a fair wind and in moderate weather. By increasing sail area, the speed of the ship is improved downwind. So either it could mean the sound of the stunsails being ripped apart by the gale, or it could refer to the act of the stunsails being carried by the wind that's blowing, or it might have been a pun on the word "boom" as one of the original versions of shanty replaces bones with Boom.
actually not really. Oldest version traces back to a version recorded in the journal of the whaling ship Atkins Adams from 1855 and other sources state a date of around 1860-70s so it wasn't written in 1930s. And they tried to match it more to other melodies of 1700s so makes sense
this is a shanty that's supposed to be sung when working not a song song by profession vocalists. I love Stan Rogers but a bunch of sailors who do nothing but scream and smoke and drink having a good voice is absolutely a fantasy. There's a reason Stan is irreplaceable
Mate this should be something sang along with manual labour such as polishing the artillery or going whale hunting. It’s more than normal that it’s better performed by a group of musicians…same applies for the shanties in black flag
So I was so excited when I saw assassins creed did this song.... (didn’t play this game)... and I hate it. Stan Rogers/dreadnoughts/longest johns did it waaaaayyy better
this sounds more like actual singing by a bunch of brash sailors not more like a song. There's a difference between shanties made sung by a professional vs a dozen of sailors who do nothing but drink and scream and smoke
This shanty had some of the best harmonies in the game.
This one and New York Girls were amazing
Favorite Shanty in the game.
Hate it when the wind interrupts their singing though.....
+Dylan Stephens rouge wind incomming!!

Yeah

I love shanties. My father used to be a sailor and he sang them to me when I was little. Old Maui always was my favorite
Your dad sounds really cool!

@EJ H By then steam ships were in use, im confused.
@EJ H Cause, why would they talk about a sail ship when steam shipe had already taken over.
@EJ H Well come to think of it your right. Steam ships were in use, but they weren't used for exploration missions. This song talks about explorers from Antarctica coming to old Maui a place in Hawaii. Makes more sense, I understand now.
the first ocean faring steamships weren't around util the 1800s. when the song was wrote, people were still sailing.

Yes! The Northwest passage is an awesome song! Usually blare it on my way into work during winters rough weather.
A song is only truly good when it can be catchy without it's music
which it does. That's what shanties are supposed to be
this one is the best !
I'm glad they put this one in.
Adoro esta Saloma. La primera vez que la oí estuve medio minuto analizando y luego fue simplemente un ''me fascinó''.

Thanks. But Unfortunately, I don't understand some of these old phrases.
What does " Our stuns'l's bones is carried away" mean?
@@Captain8492 I'm guessing they mean their studding sail got damaged.

If you want the lyrics you can check the assassins creed rogue
Going from subnautica below zero to normal subnautica be like:
This song is very very nice
Stan Rogers. Nuff said.
This one is brilliant!

By God, we’ll have our home again
Stop simping brother, so what she left you on read. Your crew needs you to raise anchor 😤💪⚓️
Stan Rogers! fuck yeah!!!
this.. isnt stan rogers...
I think I would have preferred if they used the historical melody of "Rolling down to old Mohee" as this melody was written in the 1930's
you are not the first i've come across

An insult to stan rogers. You should have just used his version - far better

This is supposed to sound like sailors singing while working, not professional vocalists

It's supposed to sound like sailors on a ship. The song is literally used to simulate your crew singing when you're out at sea in the game...
