Rock and Roll over is probably my faforite Kiss-Album. Great Produktion for the time. ACE Frehley absolutly nailed it with his great solos. I was never a big Fan of Destroyer. Keep on rocking and greetings from Germany. 🇩🇪👍🤘🎸🍻🌍
It is a great album for sure. I like almost every KISS guitar solo from the 1970s. The bass lines were just as great too. There’s so much to appreciate with this band. Awesome to have someone from the other side of the world commenting. This Canadian appreciates it. Rock on! 🤘🤘
I also prefer Destroyer slightly. Both very strong albums, they put more energy into the music than anyone at that time. Every song good, except "Take Me" which is painful brain rot lol
I like both albums equally for different reasons. I can listen to them both start to finish and not get bored. They each fit a different mood. Destroyer is more polished and rock n' roll over is more raunchy.
Note to the poster of this video. Paul Stanley says, in his book, that "Hard Luck Woman" was written as a nod to Rod Stewart's tune "Maggie May". They both have that acoustic Folky-Pop vibe and Perter Criss' voice is very reminiscent of Rod Stewart's.
Yes, I've always found that to be an interesting side note. I seem to remember Paul wanting Rod Stewart to record it, but some people in management thought it would be a good choice for KISS to keep it and have Peter sing it. I think their intention was to hopefully have another hit song, with the help of a similar balladesque style that worked in making Beth successful.
The loud guitars and upfront, "in your face" production of Rock And Roll Over is unique to that album. I should have given a few songs from that album a higher mark. Thanks for your comment!
Cool ! Those albums are among the best ways to be introduced to KISS. I started with Destroyer but it's possible that I may have heard the KISS Alive! album first. I can't remember exactly. I do remember seeing them on the Paul Lynde Halloween special in October of 1976 and that got me even more hyped up for KISS. Those were great times!
I really love the Double Platinum mix of "Dr. Love", Gene's vocals are mixed out, leaving only the backing track and the background vocals. Him always growling "THEY CALL ME..." was a bit tiresome, so the instrumental break was a nice change.
It's been a long time since I listened to the Double Platinum version. Now that you mentioned it, I'm going to go give it a listen. Thanks for mentioning it !
These are the KISS classic albums. I'd give 9s or 10s to the majority of the songs. Sure there's a few crappers like Beth and Baby Driver but these albums ROCK!
? Baby Driver? WTF. How is that a crapper? I like Peter's voice as much as the other two and more of a Rock and Roll style than Gene or Paul. Great lyrics and the hook is excellent. I have it on my play list when I ride my motorcycle. R&R Over was meant specifically to get away from the polish of Bob Ezrin, and to be more in line with Dressed to Kill. Destroyer was like the Elder, with Bob being the 5th member of the band (Ace hated it). Dressed to Kill and R&R Over are your classic Kiss albums. Dressed to Kill is my favorite studio album, and R&R Over is a very close 2nd. PS Don't hate on Beth. It brought them to super stardom.
@damnwicked666 If I were to compare the ballads, Beth vs. Hard Luck Woman, HLW would definitely rate much higher. I can't remember what you gave it now...lol. If Beth wouldn't have become what it did in KISStory, and as overplayed almost as much as Rock n Roll All Nite, I migt like it more. Sometimes you can only take so much...lol. I probably would rate God of Thunder higher too, if only for the uptempo live version which I prefer way more.
@@SonicVR12 I gave Hard Luck Woman a 7.5. It is actually a really good song but I probably down-played it because of the mellower style. I like it better than Beth. I like God Of Thunder a lot but I get bored with it, maybe because I’ve heard it so much and it plods along at a slower tempo. I’m not sure why I feel that way.
@damnwicked666 I agree, GOT definitely plods along at that slow tempo. I really dig the live version. Curious question, how far into KISS history do you follow? Any of the 80s or 90's? Or does it end with the original lineup?
@@SonicVR12 I’ve been following the whole KISS journey, all the way til the end. I’m still watching interviews with Paul, Ace and Gene. I’ll even check out what Bruce Kulick and Vinnie Vincent are doing every once in a while. The first KISS album I remember hearing was Destroyer, but it’s possible I heard Alive! or one of the 3 originals before that and I just can’t remember.
Not a Kiss fan (I know, moronic, right), but I do appreciate how thorough and insightful this Kiss Album Teardown is. I give it a 10/10. One of the best I’ve watched. 👏
Not to take away from the subject matter but, I LOVE ACE. If you like Ace Frehley’s guitar style I’d suggest listening to UFO from the exact same time period with Mr. Michael Schenker on guitar. I always thought Ace and him were TOP 5 all time.
I'm a big fan of Ulrich Roth (ex-Scorpions guitarist). Ace wrote many memorable solos in the 1970s. He was my first lead guitar inspiration. He's been playing really poorly in recent years though. I'm almost embarrassed to hear him play these days because he was THE original guitar hero for me.
I love them both. Would have liked to hear them play Love ‘Em Leave ‘Em, Mr. Speed, Flaming Youth, Sweet Pain , Take Me and See You In Your Dreams in concert more often.
Now that you mention it, I think you’re right. It was a common practice back in the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s. I’m glad you brought my attention to that because now I wanna compare the song fade-outs on Rock And Roll Over with Destroyer’s song fade-outs.
Beth I’d rate way higher than 5.5 that’s just nuts and Makin Love higher too it’s a way better song than See You In Your Dreams which is filler imo. Hard Luck Woman is a much better song too. Those 3 songs are all an easy 9 for me
I definitely underrated Makin' Love and Hard Luck Woman. I might have underrated Beth too because it's not a bad song, just not a song that I really connect to.
Rock and Roll Over is better. Destroyer has some bad songs, but however, has a couple of their greatest Detroit Rock City and God of Thunder. Great Expectations and Flaming Youth is horrible. Sweet Pain isn't too good.
I do know what you mean about Ezrin's influence making the songs sound more cinematic or showtune-like. Alice Cooper really has a lot of that kind of sounding stuff on some of his 70s era albums.
Beth sold the album to the casual fanbase but the hard rockin' songs on Destroyer sold the album to the hardcore fans and those that like more excitement in their music. I think songs like Detroit Rock City did a lot more for KISS' longevity and credibility than Beth.
BTW - "Stinking pile of lyrical garbage" is a perfect description of "Take Me' - EASILY the very worst tune on Rock n' Roll Over. This moron should be sued for giving it a 10 & attempting to poison the minds of any true KISS fans that don't know better. FYI - I'm 61 & still carry my ORIGINAL Kiss Army card - don't try to out-knowledge me, son !
I will take rock ‘n’ roll over all day every day. Wood destroyer came out. I was highly let down when they rebound it with rock ‘n’ roll over. It was like a breath of fresh air, but then sadly they let me down even further with love gun. That’s what I grew up with got into Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, and so on.
Rock And Roll over is getting a lot of love in the comments and rightfully so. I got into KISS right around the time Destroyer was released and a few years later got into Zeppelin, Sabbath, AC/DC, Van Halen, Sweet, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Angel, RUSH, Queen, Kansas, Priest, Maiden, Hendrix, Cream, Jeff Beck, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a bunch of other bands. However, I still always followed KISS and enjoyed a lot of their music. KISS had some duds just like all those bands did.

Good choice!
It's hard to go wrong with either one.

Agreed, except I think Take Me is a fun, rockin’ song. Definitely not a “perfect 10” though. My rating of that song in this video was said in jest.
Rock And Roll Over
This seems to be the general consensus in the comments here.
I like both albums equally for different reasons. I can listen to them both start to finish and not get bored. They each fit a different mood. Destroyer is more polished and rock n' roll over is more raunchy.
I agree! Well said. 👍

Kiss are Kiss All 70;s Kiss albums are great!
Destroyer contains Detroit Rock City , God Of Thunder and Do You Love Me which are all top ten KISS songs for me so it wins.
Greats songs and lots of magic on that album.
great review i have rock and roll over winning

Destroyer.....the only Kiss-album I need...
It's a classic!
I bought these two records on the same day and my Kiss madness began!

Rock and roll over for me by far
Rock And Roll Over is rawer and has louder guitars. That's one thing I really like about it.
Beth is amazing! Kiss were varied that is what made them great for the real fans!
I really appreciate the variety of music that KISS gave us.
It’s a classic. Way better than 5.5

Makin Love is a great closer.
Beth is okay, but ballads I really love are rare.
I tend to feel the same way. Ballads have to be REALLY good to earn my appreciation.
These are the KISS classic albums. I'd give 9s or 10s to the majority of the songs. Sure there's a few crappers like Beth and Baby Driver but these albums ROCK!

I can't argue with that. Both great albums though!
Rock n Roll Over...Take Me 10 out of 10! Makin' Love should be higher.

But imagine Rock n Roll Over (or Love Gun) with Bob Ezrin producing
That would be VERY interesting!
Imagine Bob Ezrin producing the first three albums which we all know and can hear how poorly produced they were.
