Actually, he's got some great ideas. Relationship is important!! I always start with a warm friendly greeting, and even if I don't buy anything, I thank them and wish them a great day.

The problem I have is when I make a pile of stuff that I want to buy and I want to ask for a "bulk price," the seller usually says, "well, let's just count it all up and we'll see." Yeah, when they count it all up they will see how much it all really costs! If they push wanting to count it, I will throw out a number that I am comfortable with paying and say: "I'll pay you $ and we don't have to waste time and I'll just grab my pile and go." Though some sellers stay tough on wanting to add it.

At my yard sales,I get everything out on the tables the night before.Cover the tables with blankets.A pad of paper, pens, newspaper and plastic bags. Have that ready to go out the front door in the morning. A workers apron with pockets,to take buyers money, and give them change, saves you time. I make 4 signs, each major street corner and my street will have one. I usually, have buyers sitting in there cars waiting for me at 8:00 A.M. Some cities, require a garage sale permit. Most who stop, buy!

You say $50? I take $50 off your pile. Now we have a deal. Rule #1-do not negotiate with hagglers early in a garage sale. I’ve seen them come early in a sale, and try and lowball you on everything. Let them walk. If they want it, they will pay.

I tried to get an old book from a lady that kept insisting $10 for it. I offered $5, $6, $7 and she wouldn't budge. What can you do in a situation like that where they just won't haggle with you?

if you really wanted the book then pay the 10. otherwise just walk away. same goes for any item.

I don't 100% agree. If something is $150 and you offer below 50%, you will be insulting the seller and you don't want to do that. You have to ask yourself, what do you really want to pay for that item. Then you drop about $20 from what you really want to pay for it. That's how the negotiating starts.
