  • The straight knee or front knee is a common knee strike in Muay Thai, and involves thrusting the front of the knee into the head or body of an opponent. The straight knee is applied from a stand-up position both when the combatants are separated, or when they are clinching. In this particular video I am demonstrating how to throw a straight knee without the clinch. Key points to remember:
    1. Stand tall on your support leg.
    2. Same side arm as knee should swing downwards.
    3. Opposite side arm should come in front of your face for protection.
    4. Your toes of the leg you are kneeing with should be pointed!
    5. Lean back and push your hips forward! Your knee should come upwards at an angle,
through your opponents stomach and out of between their shoulder blades.

One thing I could add is that you should be pulling the shoulder back more. If you throw the right/rear knee, pull the left shoulder back more. Same vice versa.

it always seems like I do it the proper way but i always have this feel that the impact is not there so its just fancy looking not useful , I tried in a sandbag but im still not convinced enough that I do it the proper way .

is there a way to attack the opponent's knee with your own, and what parts of it do you strike? Thanks.

I have seen karateka do a round knee kick (mawashi keri) knee to the opponents thigh. If you bend your support leg you can make your point of contact lower.

This is a good question. Obviously there's the risk of going knee to knee, bone on bone. But I was wondering too if you could deflect or counter on an oncoming knee with one of your own, thrown at an angle and meant to hit the thigh obviously.

This is true, but if you follow the steps in the video you will automatically connect with the correct part of the knee. :) You will end up striking with the sharpest part of the knee, which is the center. Thanks for the support!

Yes, The kneecap is in the center of your knee.

HeavySwordWarrior That is not what i have learnd.. U should hit with the outside of your knee. There is a big bone that is rock solid.
