    You got a new subscriber here and have convinced me to go dark side on my Honda Goldwing… ordered my tire rite after watching one of your first videos that came across my feed and was already thinking about it… we are about to hit the stride of riding season here in NC and I was not wanting to pay another 300 dollars for a tire that didn’t last even a year… thanks for the videos..

      I'm being honest, the Goldwing seems like it was built to run with a car tire. I swear to God mine handles better with the Ct than it ever did a bike tire. Can't even tell it has a Ct on it.

    One part of the equation people like to ignore when complaining about car tires on bikes, is that car tires are rated for much higher load. Which is great for these heavy cruiser and touring bikes, especially running with passengers and gear. I wouldn't put a car tire on a sport bike but my Honda VTX 1800 runs real good with one. I don't really notice it unless I am at low speeds turning.

    Not for me. Try leaning over on a dark side tyre in the wet? Insurance companies don’t cover this in the UK for a reason. No amount of savings are going to be enough to compromise my safety. They might be ok if you like riding in a fairly straight line, but not if you want to have “fun”. Just my take on it. Ride safe and enjoy what you got. Thanks for the video and Cheers. 👍🏻

    For the record. I am trying to convince a friend to go darkside on his vstar 1300 tourer... BECAUSE there is a video in youtube of a k1600 running the nurburgring at full blast scrapping pegs thru the corners with ZERO issues. Most people would never have the balls to do that on normal mc tires. So im sold. I would do the same to my VFR800 but aesthetically looks bad on that bike.

    In Europe, all vehicles have the the compatible homologated tire dimensions printed on the registration. If you're stopped by police and during the stop they find other dimensions of tires than the ones listed in the registration, mounted on your vehicle, your registration is suspended they would remove registration plates from your vehicle and it would leave the site on a platform. Also, you would get a substantial ticket. The registration may be cancelled and you would have to revert the vehicle in the legal state, have it inspected, and then apply for a new registration.
    Also, every two years, the vehicle must pass the technical inspection. If it doesn't, the registration would be retained by the authorized inspection station and handed over to the police. Then you would have to do the same things I mentioned above, to regain the right to drive that vehicle on public roads.
    So, from this perspective, I doubt European motorcyclists would be "seduced by the sith"...

    been darkside for years on harley and goldwing, there is quite a difference in different tires as far as the counter steer. The best tire I have ever used is a Pirelli cinturato P1 run flat. I would defy anyone to tell a difference in handling, however the ride is 100% better, better traction for acceleration and braking and needless to say run flat safety. Cost wise about the same as a mct

      I agree, have ridden Dark on a 1200 'Wing and a Vstar 950, the 950 needs a lot more to lean into a turn while the 1200 doesn't even feel like it has a car tire on it. Different brands and profiles do indeed make a huge difference in handling.

    I have a 2013 K1600 GT. I put Michelin Road 6 GT tires on her and got over 10k miles from them. They handle great and they lasted and they are very quick and stable going edge to edge. I’d get a better motorcycle tire before going darkside, not only for the ride quality but because the bead design on car tires and motorcycle tires is different and I’d be worried in heavy cornering the bead breaking loose on a car tire. This video explains that well.

      Chaz.moto: I can attest that Jeff demonstrated to me that his ability to cut twisties with rear car tire was quit impressive. I didn't think that the car tire would provide adequate leaned in grip, but it does. I do think a front wheel car tire would be a complete different experience and would be dangerous, but since front motorcycle tires last longer it is less of a cost factor to stay with front motorcycle tire.

    • @hermionegross9824

      @@chazmoto-ourgrandtour5599 you are correct about the front car tire is completely different experience. I have had one on both front and rear for over 2 years now and about 70k miles. I will never put another motorcycle tire on my bike. I like the way the bike feels and maneuvers with the tires.

    • @JayBearjaysbigadventure
      @JayBearjaysbigadventure  2 года назад +2

      In the US, tires are marked 'DOT' or Dept of Transportation as legal for a passenger vehicle. It does not distinguish from car and motorcycle. In the UK and other countries it is expressly forbidden. So here, your ins co cannot deny a claim for it.

    • @JayBearjaysbigadventure
      @JayBearjaysbigadventure  2 года назад +1

      I only have one on the rear, as car tires aren't available in a small enough size for the front. Some people put a rear motorcycle tire on the front in a slightly larger size. That is called going 'double dark'. I've not tried that yet!

  • @hansforestmountain
    @hansforestmountain 2 года назад +2

    Well, if you're hardly leaning in the bend, you can drive with any tire.
    Now try to go really diagonally through a bend with a car tire. Then you know for sure that you should never drive with a car tire on your motorcycle.
    And oh yes, if a car tire would be so good, why not put it on your front wheel?

      I've been a high performance driving instructor for BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and others for over 30 years. I'm a certified RiderCoach for the MSF and have 15,000 + race track miles in cars and motorcycles and have over 20,000 miles darkside. What is YOUR experience level?

    • @hansforestmountain
      @hansforestmountain 2 года назад

      This has nothing to do with how many years of experience you have.
      It has to do with using common sense and safety.
      Have you ever looked closely at why there is a motorcycle tire on a motorcycle?
      If you like to drive with car tires, keep driving your car.
      Are you insured if you have an accident with car tires on your motorcycle? Here in Europe you are not. After all, you are riding on tires that fall outside the motorcycle manufacturer's specs.
      But everyone has their own fun, so have fun on your car tyre.
      Just for information, watch this video ruclips.net/video/hEZeR9E3JyY/видео.html

    • @JayBearjaysbigadventure
      @JayBearjaysbigadventure  2 года назад +6

      It has everything to do with experience, as it teaches me to collect and analyze data. It allows me to make a change and figure out if that change helped or hindered what I was trying to accomplish. Here in the US, there is no distinction between car and motorcycle tires so there is no insurance issue. My daughter is an attorney, so yes, I checked with her. Most of Europe and the UK have laws that prohibit it, but not in the US. Fortnine used a middle weight dual sport bike for his test which is silly because almost nobody goes darkside on those types of bikes. And then rode it in the rain. Yah, a great, representative test. Is it for everyone? Nope. But unless you're on a 700 lb motorcycle with over 150 hp, you really have no idea what you're talking about. I had BMW car and motorcycle wheel sitting next to each other and looked at the profiles side by side. The differences were almost unmeasurable. But hey, I'm sure you're right...
