    This hunt was shared with my good friend Aiden and we both filled our baskets with lovely Porcini mushrooms from an area akin to a Fairy Grove usually only seen in remote Northern or Eastern European forests.
    It's been an incredible year for fungi so far and over the last few days 3 short hunts have yielded well over 20kg of this valuable fungus and I've now got all of them dried and stored in mason jars......ready for the 'Dark Winter'.

    On a serious note, it is very important to learn as many 'outdoor' skills as you can since you never know when you need them.
    Having knowledge of natural environments, shooting, trapping, fishing and foraging are literally life-saving skills since without them we die when the current system of on-demand food and easy shopping goes away.....and it will go away at some point - do you want to be the guy fighting a hungry 300lb man-monster or a bloated blue-haired screamer for the last packet of Super Noodles in a ransacked supermarket or do you want to be prepared?
    Do you want your pronouns to be Was / Were? ........ nope.
    It's a simple choice.
    Knowledge is power but we're 'educated' to exist in the system without being taught what the system is and how to navigate the (obvious) pitfalls.
    Knowledge costs nothing and can be carried in the mind, given away for free and used to combat ignorance - it's a great deal but takes time and effort to learn useful skills.
    Foraging is most definitely one of those useful skills.

    Blimey that was a haul. I've never seen so many Penny buns in one place before. You were indeed blessed! I have heard this year is being called a "Mast" year as some species are producing a bumper crop. Coluld also be an indication of a hard winter to come but more probably the result of a hot dry summer?!

    • @ThousandYardStare
      @ThousandYardStare  Год назад +1

      Most of Nature is providing a heavy crop and the hot Summer probably had a lot to do with the masses of fungi this year as they fruit when the mycelium is disturbed or stressed - as soon as we got the first decent rains at the end of September the wood floor exploded with fungi and even now we're getting lots of Wood Hedgehog, Horn of Plenty and Winter Chanterelle.
      While our govern-ments are doing everything they can to destroy the food chain Nature is doing the opposite so I'm making the most of Her generosity.
      I hope you're keeping well, man.

      In a country where people are much more closely involved in Nature I can see why that makes sense. Over here there are few people who can even identify common trees and animals so foraging is only done by a tiny percentage of our population.
      It's a shame since the more people are out foraging the more seeds and spores get spread around the fields and forests.

      @@real_wakawaka I think the long dry Summer caused some stress to the mycelium as the first flush was after the first noticeable rain followed by a huge second flush after a decent amount of rain.
      Once the ground was moist they were popping up everywhere like magic.
      Although I like variety I'd take another late season session without the Spring / Summer harvest just to get the best varieties again.

      With the recent cold nights I'm starting to see other fungi coming to bear fruit so I'm hoping that the Ceps will be coming up soon. Last time we were out we found some Chanterelle and Horn of Plenty but they were well past their best. They were on South facing valleys so the North facing valleys should start producing soon.

      It was round about this time of year (early to mid September). The Summer was very dry then there was a lot of rain for a couple of days - that's what caused such a number of fungi to pop up.
      It's been similar this year with regard to the dry Summer but the ground is still dry so there are limited amounts of fungi. I was out a couple of days ago and found only 1 Porcini but there were loads of Hedgehog fungi out - I could have filled a basket with them easily. Hopefully after the rain we've had and the rain we should be getting this week there will be a decent flush of fungi in the next few days (in my area).

      @@ThousandYardStare must have something to do with the high temperatures and lack of rain this summer?

    • @ThousandYardStare
      @ThousandYardStare  2 года назад +1

      @@stephen-truthseeker I reckon so as the first sustained rain showers were making fungi pop up all over the place. However, whenever we're going to have a harsh Winter there is a nation of fruit produced and this year is no exception.
      The Winter weather probably isn't going to be exceptional either way but the political climate and the continued war on food will cause chaos globally.
      Nature is simply providing for that but through the enforced idiocy of 'education' and the distractions of media we're blinded to the bounty She provides.
      Learning outdoor skills has never been more important than it is now but so many people have no idea how to grow food, forage, fish, shoot or hunt anything - those skills would have been known by the youngest of children back in the day.

      We would probably have the same over here if many people went out and picked edible fungi but it's very much a rare event to see anyone out foraging in the UK. We're pretty much like the US as far as fast food and processed crappy genetically modified 'food' goes so it's no wonder most people are too fat and lazy to leave the house, lol
      This year was really poor for fungi but I did find a couple of new spots for Horn of Plenty which was nice.

      If there arre not that many people picking them why are there 10000000 video's of it op youtube? ( also many from the UK)Seems to me it has been getting more popular these days. Here it's mostly forbidden and only little can be picked it some forrests, then again, we don't have so much woodlands here.

      To be fair they often have a much greater appreciation of Nature and are prepared to get out into the woods to look for mushrooms.
