Atheist Orphan I don't understand why people would do that either but the youtube commenting system is a strange beast... Presumably, people do it because they think they gain ranking or something. Perhaps Geoff can enlighten us.
All The Stations I believe so about the Hereford line. Are you going to do the penistone. 144012 is the best pacer and that's one u travelled on but the pacer you went on is the most unreliable pacer is the updated one. It's top speed is 75mph but only can do 50mph max
Up until this point in the series I was just caught up in Geoff's enthusiasm and knowledge of railway technology and infrastructure, and Vicki's joie de vivre, but the start of this episode made me realise what hard work this project was, especially until tea could be found. And that reminds me why I weaned myself off caffeine - that early morning feeling, the headache, that's caffeine withdrawal and it's very unpleasant. Well done for carrying on and still smiling about it.
The Pullman GWR services all serve 3 course meals, they're denoted by a Pullman Logo in the GWR full timetables, there's a few to the west and one or two to wales I believe. Hope that helps!
Interesting piece of trivia, the actor Donald Pleasence (Blofeld in You Only Live Twice) was born at Worksop station, where his father was the Station Master.
So disappointed I missed this while you were doing it, having watched my birth and home station in one episode have now started from the begining and am hooked. Why am I hooked no idea but am loving the railway
This showed up on my random feed today. I think I know, now, one big reason I loved this series. Living on the west coast of the US< videos were almost always posted so I would see them first thing in the morning. Vickis joyful "Good Morning" which usually started each video, was a blissful way to start the day. These still bring me joy and, for truth, the idea for my first retirement year is to get a all pass and just ride the rails in England and explore for a good long time
The Baseball Ground used to have a station called Ramsline Halt. It's still there but not used. In the Rolls Royce site is Sinfin central and South stations
Hello, I believe the train you are thinking of Geoff is the Business Class service operated by Arriva Trains Wales from Cardiff to Holyhead. This has a travelling chef and business class meals are served to your table.
That train in Wales does still run from Cardiff to Holyhead at 17:15 with the posh meals lol. I almost go to go on it but it got cancelled because of a broken down freight train.
Hi guys GWR still operate a pullman restaurant car on certain services. More info here: www.gwr.com/plan-journey/journey-information/on-board/pullman-dining
When you eventually get up to Altrincham/Navigation Road (10 miles from me !).... these station also share lines with Manchester Metrolink tram lines.... Thanks for the vlogs, there are wonderful....Cheers Steve
If they take an "all the trams" tour of Manchester, there's also a branch line between Central Park and Newton Heath & Moston, that rubbish & recycling get taken out on.
The first British dining car service left Leeds for London King's Cross on 1st November 1879. This was provided by the Pullman car Princess of Wales which accommodated only 10 first-class passengers.
I can't imagine what that must have been like! Those 10 passengers must have felt like royalty (although to afford it at the time they probably *were* royalty). Eating a full meal on a train! What a thought!
You commented on the tram tracks next to main line. From Sunderland station to Pelaw the local metro runs on the network rail line! I understand the only place in the UK this happens.
Well it had to happen at some point, i hate that feeling you have when you realise you may have just gone wrong. This is what happens when you don't have your tea.
I think that they gave the Nottingham - Mansfield - Worksop line the "Robin Hood Line" name mainly because it originates in Nottingham and passes not too far away from the nature reserve historically known as "Sherwood Forest." It's one of Beeching's "reversals", becoming freight only in the sixties, leaving Mansfield without a train service. It was reopened in stages as recently as 1993-95, first to Newstead, then to Mansfield Woodhouse, then to Worksop.
Watching the videos waiting for either a shot if Spondon (where I grew up) or Skipton (where I live now). First one ticked off I guess...i just hope you got to enjoy the "Spondon Pong" whilst waiting for the train. There is a quaint castle awaiting in Skipton!
Used to live in South Yorkshire, can't wait to see some familiar stations (Swinton, Mexborough, Rotherham Central and Meadowhall) keep up the good work!
Call me crazy... one of my favourite teaser clips so far (and I love those teaser clips at the start of the video!) is Geoff's "Ohhh maaann". So impressed how perky and upbeat you have been throughout, considering how tiring I know this is! Glad you had some recent rest. :-)
I also once took the wrong train. We had a tight connection from a rail replacement, but I didn't know there was an amended timetable because of the maintenance works (that also caused the rail replacement bus to run) and just hopped on the only train that was in the station. And that was obviously the wrong one. The conductor told us to alight at the next stop and get the next train back, which we did. But to defend myself, it was in the Czech Republic and I don't speak Czech. I don't know if Derbyshire English is so different from London English, but who knows... :P
Worksop, my home town! The Robin Hood line was a (fairly) recent addition in the late 90's when they reinstated passenger services between Worksop and Nottingham, and the whole area has long been associated with Robin Hood (Major Oak, his supposed hiding tree, is only a few miles down the road in Edwinstowe). Worksop was also the setting for the children's TV show Maid Marian and her Merry Men! Interesting to see you mention the High Marnham test track, I was in the area the other week when I cycled down to see Fledborough viaduct, which the High Marnham track used to cross when it was still a passenger line to Lincoln. It's an impressive structure that is now part of the national cycle network.
The upgraded/accessible Pacer sounded interesting. Do you have anyone that knows the details about who did the exemplar upgrade, exactly what they changed, and how much it would cost to make sure that all the Pacers (...sorry - All The Pacers) were converted to be wheelchair compliant, etc?
Looked on your website and saw you were passing through Uttoxeter that day. Just thought it was funny since I'm staying in Uttoxeter right now on holiday and it's the cutest little town in the centre. Have not seen the station though since it's a bit of a walk away from town cetre
I have been watching all your videos out of order for the last several weeks and VIA Rail (Canada’s National Rail Service) acquired several trainsets of the unused Dreamliner from the UK a few years ago to complement their aging fleet (most rolling stock is 20-40 years old). Seeing those on a North American line with platforms that are not raised to the same height as the doors is awkward. VIA is also embarking on an ambitious modernization program that has them buying bi modal sets from Siemens for the Quebec City - Windsor Corridor and eventually cross country trips, creating their own electric right-of-ways to avoid the freights (which tie up timetables due to the length and frequency on the mainlines. Would love to have you and Vicki(y) come across the pond and take a look at the Corridor service and the GO Train service and the Montreal area
Can't believe I never saw you at Longport Geoff! My local station, commute daily from there to Manchester lol. (One of the most annoying places to commute to, with only two direct trains to Manchester in the morning and no direct trains back, even though the Northern services stop at every stop but there during the afternoons and evenings. Glad to see it get a mention! :)
Following on from that, I've asked the conductors on the Northern stopper service before and they were never told why Longport's service was cancelled aside from the two in the morning, as it used to receive a full Northern rail service to Manchester. But annoying having a half an hour wait at Stoke everyday for the East Midlands train on my way home lol
The reason why Peartree has a limited service of Peak Hour only trains is because it was on the Derby - Sinfin branch which is where the Rolls Royce factory can be found. The branch line opened in 1978 and there were only four trains a day on the Derby - Sinfin branch and these trains were not conveniently timed for workers at the Rolls Royce factory.
Why's it called Robin Hood Line, Geoff? That'll be Sherwood Forest you are travelling through! Great example of making old pit lines into a successful passenger service.
I believe the first ever railway dining service was on the Kings Cross to Leeds service in 1879. No mention was made of free WiFi or power points sadly Geoff.
For all the Pacer lovers/haters out there. As many may well know, they were based on the same bodywork as the Leyland National bus and used newly developed jig manufacturing techniques on a production line assembly. Now, things have gone full circle and there is a company taking old Pacers, refurbishing the bodies, adding an electric drivetrain and turning them into..... BUSES! Crazy but true. It also goes to demonstrate the robustness and longevity of the Pacer, which really is the Marmite of the train world. You could say they are a little like the train equivalent of the Routemaster bus.
If you struggled with the pronunciation of Adwick, when you get to West Yorkshire, Keighley is Keith-lee and Slaithwaite is Slough-it (Slough as in the town in Berkshire).
Is it bad that I'm a wee bit excited to see you come up North? Glasgow can be a bastard to get round all the stations as no service goes to them all (as far as I'm aware). To get from my local station to another just a mile away takes two changes! Pity you won't be stopping at (the ambiguously named!) High Street station, you get the best bacon butties in town from there.
I assumed you were wearing red and green as some reference to Christmas. More specifically the last part of the song 'Twelve Days of Christmas, "...and a Partridge in a Pear Tree."
It's not the most salubrious area in Derby to be honest. As someone else said, there have probably been shady activities taking place on the platforms. Not a place to hang around after dark.
Amazed you survived Peartree, didn't get stabbed or something. I did some filming on the bridge you could see in the vid; nearly didn't live to show the footage. The gates are there for a reason. No riff-raff. Have been on a train that calls there but never stepped off, and for good reason.
I thought that your red and green t-shirts were to represent Port and Starboard. I note that Vicki (in red), was correctly on Geoff's left. Is that so we can tell if you're walking towards the camera or away from it?
An interesting, yet tedious little piece of information for you all to ignore. After passing northbound through Newstead, the “ Robin Hood Line “ goes through a short tunnel under a small hill. This, believe it or not, is part of a range of hills called “The Robin Hood Hills“. At the time of when the line re-opening was being planned, some marketing wonk made the connection between the medieval thief/robber/folk hero of that name and the range of hill through which the line passes. In fact, on some really old maps, there is a mark denoting the site of one of the many larders of Robin Hood. When transposed onto a modern map, the larder would be directly above the tunnel.
Another interesting little piece of information for you all, this time with regards to Langwith-Whaley Thorns station. During the 1914-18 war, this was the site of the factory that produced the explosive material that was used in the sea-mines that protected the British Isles.
So, I'm late to the party. Arriva Trains Wales operate a Cardiff - Shrewsbury - Holyhead service, and in first class you get a freshly cooked meal. My first class ticket from Shrewsbury was £55 - absolute bargain!
So will you be having a special celebration at station 1282 - marking the half way mark? Looks like you aren't too far off! Enjoying the series very much - it's a great idea for a project. I grew up in the UK and travelled by train a fair bit (looks like you've still got to do my original home station of Bridgwater in Somerset); but live in Sydney these days though. Have you got many more stations you can do in day trips from home? Or is it all now multiple days away?
Derby became a city in 1976, (I was 4, I only know the following learning retrospectively), when Derby swallowed up Spondon I believe, giving Derby the more than 250,000 population requirement for city status. I bought a second hand Amstrad 464 computer in Spondon.... Circa.... 1997......
6:00 I assume that you're talking about Pullman Dining offered on some long-distance GWR services. More info: www.gwr.com/plan-journey/journey-information/on-board/pullman-dining
There was a passenger service special on the test track in 1984 but it only contained dummies and the train was bound for an appointment with a nuclear flask.

All The Stations I believe so about the Hereford line. Are you going to do the penistone. 144012 is the best pacer and that's one u travelled on but the pacer you went on is the most unreliable pacer is the updated one. It's top speed is 75mph but only can do 50mph max
All The Stations When are you doing the Valleys?
All The Stations What about Langley mill ?
No hes doing all the stations apart from Langley Mill.
Up until this point in the series I was just caught up in Geoff's enthusiasm and knowledge of railway technology and infrastructure, and Vicki's joie de vivre, but the start of this episode made me realise what hard work this project was, especially until tea could be found. I'm in love with this series, you guys brighten my day every time a video comes out!
Interesting piece of trivia, the actor Donald Pleasence (Blofeld in You Only Live Twice) was born at Worksop station, where his father was the Station Master.
I only discovered your wonderful vlogs a few days ago, and am watching 4-5 a day until I catch up! You two are just BRILLIANT, keep up the good work!
So disappointed I missed this while you were doing it, having watched my birth and home station in one episode have now started from the begining and am hooked. Why am I hooked no idea but am loving the railway
You'll also see tram tracks running parallel to train tracks on the line between jewellery quarter and the Hawthorns!
And on the Altrincham branch of Manchester Metrolink
The Hawthorns is of course West Bromwich's mainline station! To go to West Brom town centre you need the tram!
as someone super local brought up in derby this video finally taught me how to get into the damn station - thanks!

Peter Jenkins sounds nice, but I don't like DB companies. But does it stop at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch?
No Llanfair P G unfortunately :-(
Jonistan Why don't you like DB companies?
Many British train companies are owned or part-owned by non-UK national railway companies. One of these is Deutsche Bahn.
uncriticalsimon Well DB is not too national anymore, is it. Only happens to be owned by the state, but apart from that, it's private
How weired I got on that very pacer on a train to Worksop today and came home to watch this. The cafe at Worksop is absolutely smashing
That train in Wales does still run from Cardiff to Holyhead at 17:15 with the posh meals lol. I almost go to go on it but it got cancelled because of a broken down freight train.
Wow! Greetings from Worksop. I'm a massive fan of your videos. Nice to see you coming to my neck of the woods.
Oh my goodness!!! I was the one waving out of the back cab too you!! 😂😂
I just came home from the last day of school. And in my sub box I see All The Stations. This is how a great day should be!
Royal Cracks last day of school? I have another month.
Hi guys
GWR still operate a pullman restaurant car on certain services.
More info here:
www.gwr.com/plan-journey/journey-information/on-board/pullman-dining
I think the longest platform is at Scarboro Yorkshire because the trains came to this destrn soation in earlier years gone by for Holidays
Welcome to my Home Town Derby
Spondon is my local station! Love it
When you eventually get up to Altrincham/Navigation Road (10 miles from me !).... these station also share lines with Manchester Metrolink tram lines.... Thanks for the vlogs, there are wonderful....Cheers Steve
If they take an "all the trams" tour of Manchester, there's also a branch line between Central Park and Newton Heath & Moston, that rubbish & recycling get taken out on.
The dinner service you talk about (I think) is the Pullman service from London to Swansea where you can book to have a place on this dining carriage
There is a Pullman service operated by GWR from Paddington to Plymouth and vice versa.
Geoff and Vicki u guys are amazing
You commented on the tram tracks next to main line. From Sunderland station to Pelaw the local metro runs on the network rail line! I understand the only place in the UK this happens.
I used to get the Crewe-Derby train from Stoke to Derby most days for Uni. I have a soft spot for that little one carriage affair :)
Well it had to happen at some point, i hate that feeling you have when you realise you may have just gone wrong. This is what happens when you don't have your tea.
Derby is near Alton towers resort. I have went to Alton towers before.
I love this video
Hi guys, I work at electromotive at Longport , glad you come to visit right next to where I work

ok mate
Used to live in South Yorkshire, can't wait to see some familiar stations (Swinton, Mexborough, Rotherham Central and Meadowhall) keep up the good work!
Swinton?

Man Behind The Camera
Congratulations, you don't understand how puns work! -_-
I grew up there and we say the "w".
KasabianFan44 I think he was just calling Geoff a dick!!! Just kidding!!! Sorry!!!
I work in Donny and everyone there pronounces the "w" as well.
Geoff is just like my dad, always needs that cup of tea!
I'm having my second cuppa this morning, as I watch this.

Very close to where I live. If only I knew, would have popped down to say hello..
Vicki's jacket should be on display at the National Railway Museum
Would be glad to see it🤣

the super pacer ! I actually like it it's used a lot on the Doncaster Sheffield / hull line
Willington. Where the bassist John Wetton was born. (but he was brought up in Bournemouth.)
The reason why Peartree has a limited service of Peak Hour only trains is because it was on the Derby - Sinfin branch which is where the Rolls Royce factory can be found. Why's it called Robin Hood Line, Geoff? That'll be Sherwood Forest you are travelling through! Great example of making old pit lines into a successful passenger service.
Did you by any chance notice the disused Ramsline Halt platform between Derby and Peartree?
I believe the first ever railway dining service was on the Kings Cross to Leeds service in 1879.
No mention was made of free WiFi or power points sadly Geoff.
A nice cup of tea solves everything.
For all the Pacer lovers/haters out there. I believe the newest station may be, Edinburgh gateway, the new tram rail link to Edinburgh airport
VoViF Edinburgh Gatteway opened December 2016. Cambridge North opened May 2017. A few others such as Low Moor and Ilkeston opened in between.
Perhaps you can convince your Chemist to supply you with tea patches as apposed to nicotine ones for emergencies like this.
Geoff doesn't smoke
1st November 1879 Leeds to London Great Northwestern - first buffet cart on railway uk
If you struggled with the pronunciation of Adwick, when you get to West Yorkshire, Keighley is Keith-lee and Slaithwaite is Slough-it (Slough as in the town in Berkshire).
I'm watching this while drinking my tea.
it's a pity you did Peartree this year - there USED TO BE trains to Sinfin North and Sinfin Central ...
Caught the train from peartree to derby once just for the hell of it.
I assumed you were wearing red and green as some reference to Christmas. More specifically the last part of the song 'Twelve Days of Christmas, "...and a Partridge in a Pear Tree."
Uttoxeter racecourse. Quite a few of Britains racecourses have railway stations next to them.
Peartree Station definitely needs a Partridge as the station's pet - make it happen by December (2017)!
I'm surprised that Vicki didn't get off at Chesterfield and look at the crooked spire
Dylan Towers same here and the statue of George Stephenson, Father of the railways as we know it!
Longport is where the new Class 69s are being built, worth a look in the yard
Come and visit Derby station again someday, it's been upgraded and improved since 2017
They journey continues :)
What do you mean "Why is it called the Robin Hood line?" ... ?? It runs through the _Sherwood Forest_ and _Nottingham_ !!
Intelligent people often have no common sense......!
When Geoff said there’s WiFi on a pacer he really meant there’s WiFi on a bus
It's always raining in Derby.
pear tree isn't the nicest area of derby thus having the gates, i believe the connector to the get is in the EMT office.
I agree, it's a shame isn't it. It sounds so lovely, too!
Any idea why Peartree station has/needs gated access?
It's a tiny train station, what would the do, steal the bins?
Martijn Kösters It may have a history of anti-social behaviour such as people using the station to take drugs etc.
Are there any other stations with gated access?
It's not the most salubrious area in Derby to be honest. As someone else said, there have probably been shady activities taking place on the platforms. Not a place to hang around after dark.
Maybe there are just people being anti-social while they are there.... moody teens and whatnot.
Yey, nice to see you were at Longport :-)
Amazed you survived Peartree, didn't get stabbed or something. I did some filming on the bridge you could see in the vid; nearly didn't live to show the footage. The gates are there for a reason. No riff-raff. Have been on a train that calls there but never stepped off, and for good reason.
Peartree ain't even bad lol
Hey! They went on the 144e!
I thought that your red and green t-shirts were to represent Port and Starboard. I note that Vicki (in red), was correctly on Geoff's left. Is that so we can tell if you're walking towards the camera or away from it?

Should of gone a bit further down the line to Burton on Trent and there you would of found the Coors brewery
My local Station Worksop ✔️ YEEEEEEES

Enjoying the series very much - it's a great idea for a project. I grew up in the UK and travelled by train a fair bit (looks like you've still got to do my original home station of Bridgwater in Somerset); but live in Sydney these days though.
Have you got many more stations you can do in day trips from home? Or is it all now multiple days away?
Non railway, a trip to Nottingham is not complete without a visit to retro clothing, The Pit and the pendulum and ROCK CITY!!!! 😊
Wrong Train!! school boy error there Geoff. Had to happen at some stage thou. You need that shot of caffeine in the morning to wake the Brain up.
As far as 1:22, Geoff says he's chirpy but not sure his voice has woken up just yet!
No Partridges at Peartree. What a shame...wait a minute...AHA!!
So the journey to Peartree went pear-shaped...
It's 11am in New Zealand which means coffee break & now more importantly All The Stations 😂
Derby became a city in 1976, (I was 4, I only know the following learning retrospectively), when Derby swallowed up Spondon I believe, giving Derby the more than 250,000 population requirement for city status. I bought a second hand Amstrad 464 computer in Spondon.... Circa.... 1997......
