Thanks for a very interesting video, I started at the "Loco" in December 1952 as an apprentice in the works training school, and later moved to Number 6 shop on the bottom yard, "Tinsmiths Shop", then when the bottom yard closed we were moved into what was I believe the Brass Foundry, and joined into the Coppersmiths shop, where the roofs of the diesel loco were made before being fitted to the locos. I left the Loco works in 1964 but I enjoyed most of my time there, but was very sad to hear of it being closed down and most of it demolished. Sad thing for Derby.
Obviously much of this film has been shown before on many programmes but I've never seen the "Fell loco" footage before those brief clips of it under construction are gems, I would love to see more.! Very interesting thanks for posting.
My grandfather worked at Derby works as a crane driver but, sadly for me, never discussed the nature of his work with me. He retired in the late '50's and died in 1969 or so. RIP Derby works & Fred Worthington.
A good compilation, pleased to see some of Steve Higgins 80's videos included in the clip. Steve and myself were fanatical about recording the final years for which we have many records of.
You have just said, the old entrance. that was dug out in early 70's while I was there. the original is between drafting office and parcels. facing the Brunswick.

Destroyed by politics along with the rest of our major manufacturing. We could have been by now one of the most respected train makers in the world.
A great great fantastic video. Really enjoyed watching it. Many thanks from chris 👍

R.I.P Derby Works
So sad, heartbreaking, England, the place where it all started, is like the US, lost everything
But no ships, trains, cars & aircraft. Just diggers.
Did it say that this workshop closed it's doors in 2004
Sad all started here now we can't even build our own locos, where did it all go so wrong..?
So sad to see the demise of British engineering. 😢
I went to Darby to train on rail cars and New Diesel locomotives Ln 1959.
The quick glimpse of the purple van at 4.08 min is a Bradford van owned by a man called Rupert he was a fitter in 8 shop and worked with my dad 😁😁👍👍
was that workshop called "8 shop" or "H shop"? its hard to make out.
It would be 8 shop at the loco works
@@appy528 ok, thanks.
We dont build anything these days, buy cheap foreign imports thus losing the skills base.
Derby Works rules !!!!!!!!!
I thought that the GWR built both locomotives and carriages at Swindon.
You're correct, it did.
Shame. If you have anything else on the Loco Works please get in touch
And sadly all this will end very soon the end of train making in derby
