We went to Iceland the first week of November and left the day Grindavík was evacuated. If you use Streato (city bus), the ride into town is only kr1140 ($8 USD) one way. You can get an ‘expedition ticket (transfer)’ and ride for a couple of hours for free. The city bus system is fabulous and very good. Not only that, the buses take credit cards. We didn’t have to use any ISK for the entire time we were there.

Hi! I was there on June. There always a risk that you have to wear hat and / or gloves in Reykjavik, the weather is very unpredictable in the whole country:)
If you don't have much time the bus is a good option. We rented a car in Keflavik and it was 45 minutes to drive to Reykjavik where we started and ended our week visit. Those are in Reykjavik. You can just rent a car directly from the airport, for as long or short you want to, forexample Blue car rental, drive to Reykjavik and leave the car to their station in the city as well. Cruises are from Reykjavik too.

Iceland is cashless like everywhere, not sure where you can exchange money besides the airport. Most likely in Reykjavik City.
