Wonder if they planned Phil alcoholism storyline years in advance. It’s just Phil always had a beer in his hand years before he actually became an alcoholic.

Lol! I really like the character of the busybody uptight Scottish registrar- especially how Grant charms her lol. EastEnders was fun and gripping back then.

EastEnders certainly was fun and gripping back then. That's why I don't watch it anymore, because it's too miserable and depressing these days. Although, I have been tuning in this week for the gas explosion storyline.

After seeing Phil talk like that, it's hard to believe the same character is still in EastEnders as he's more cranky and irritable these days.

He was more lighthearted and cheerful in the early to mid 90's, a completely different character to what he became in the later years, he started to turn a bit more mean and into a hardman around 1996 when he became an alcoholic, then after Grant left, around 2000, he became more serious and cranky, 2000-2003 was his villain era.

i know its only 6 years too late but the answer is in the video itself. phil and grant wanted to stop ricky and sam from getting married
