What next would like to share with Y , most of guitar makers , pushing customers to chose , cut away with pre amp , some , not ! Let me say what is stupid , Y can chose Ibanez 7and 8 strings classical with out preamp , but , if Y want 6 string , pre amp is that Y have to take , and etc . Thanks for info .
I come back to this video often. This Ibanez has a warm tone that I really enjoy, even in the lower register. The selection of lute pieces you play here is fantastic as well.

Ha. Not quite. Not remotely related to Henry VIII or his court. The music is from 17th-century Scotland, after James VI had left Scotland to become James I of Britain (England and Wales). Anyway, glad you like the music :-)
wonderful sound. the classical guitar is a bit lacking in low range, which is why playing on an instrument like this can sound so wholesome. It's very hard to play though I imagine. would you ever consider playing moonlight sonata on this?
I had an Ibanez, it has a clear sound. I like that guitar. Thank you for sharing, another thing, I prefer Ibanez than Godin, I tested a Godin and didn't like its sound, too dirty. Kind regards.

Beautiful, good sir!! I have an Ibanez TAM10 8-string in standard electric tuning (F#, B, E, A, d, g, b, e; low-high); never heard of harp-sharp tuning, but yours sounds amazing. :)
+oddfellowfloyd -- Harp-Sharp tuning is one of the French tunings from the period between Renaissance tuning and Baroque tuning. There was a thirty-year period where they experimented with lots of alternate tunings, over 40 of them (!), before settling for the Baroque tuning, which is mainly a Dm chord. I really like this tuning, and it seems to suit the 8-string guitar.
Rob MacKillop I played standard tuning dropped to DGCFAD for solo jazz. I heard George VanEps did that but his 7 low was a G then DGCFAD. It has velvety cushion solo guitar tone compared to regular.

John Adams - Hi John. It says right at the start of the video: Ibanez. It's really cheap, but well made. Recommended for someone who just wants to try out an 8-string, before spending a lot of money. The "courante et double" sounds rather French baroque than Scottish to me. On which Ms did you find it? Exchanges were numerous in these days, I wouldn'd be surprised to find a "continental" version somewhere.

I had thought of getting a 10-string, but this 8-string turned up instead. I was playing too many instruments, and there are only 24 hours in a day!

Hi Pavel. I had these pieces published by Centerstream, in my book entitled The Scottish Guitar, which also includes my recordings of every piece. But the arrangements are for 6-string guitar in DADGAD tuning. However, the treble clef is also included, so you could arrange them for 8 strings. Best wishes, Rob.

I just said I'd better like this music on the Stauffer (althought this 8 strings sound good).However, when we choose one instrument rather than another to play something,, what do we do but compare?Compare is not necessary give a note between good and bad, I think.
In these pieces it appears that you almost never play 2 strings simultaneously but sound 2 close together to create effect of chord but each note sounded invidividually. Is that correct, or just how it sounds because of the long reverberation?
Hi Marianna. I think you are referring to what I call split diads - two notes slightly separated. I do this to fill out the sound a little, and to soften the beat, which I often do when the piece is not a strict dance. I hope that helps?
Rob,if you're still reading comments,I'd love to pick your brains re. tuning systems.I've been putting Scottish tunes onto six string guitar with some success,mostly in open D.Having been on Russian 7 string for a few years now,'ve been a bit frustrated ,trying to put Scottish/Irish tunes + a few by O'Carolan; the tuning seems well suited to play melodies in 3rds and what I think of as 'soft' harmonies;3rds,6ths,10ths,etc.It doesn't seem to have as much space for 'hard' harmonies when you need them(4ths/5ths). Do you think I may be barking up the wrong tree/should stick to minor keys if I can manage anything at all, or just stick to open D on the 6 ? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
It depends on the original score. In this case, the original was for a ten-course lute, effectively ten strings. So there were one or two places where I had to adapt the score for a particular bass note. However, I can do this while reading the original tablature. So, yes, it is definitely possible to read lute tab directly on an 8-string guitar.

I must say, the more I listen to this instrument the more I like it. My Bob Lundberg lute is for sale--and who can say what I'll do when it sells? That said, I wonder what Dowland would have play if he had had the choice.

I only had it for a week. I thought it was excellent for the price, but it reminded me that I prefer lutes, so sold it. For the price, it can't be beaten. At least, the price it was when I bought it in 2015 - £450, including hard case.
Robert, I just got one of these. Ibanez has actually just discontinued making them, so if you're interested I'd jump on one of the handful for sale online. Like Rob says you can't beat for the price - even if you don't use the extra strings it's got a "bigger" sound than six strings of the same price range. I'm having a lot of fun with mine.

Very different. It's machine made, largely, while Scot's is handmade. The sounds are very different. I like them both, for different reasons.

I must say, the more I listen to this instrument the more I like it. My Bob Lundberg lute is for sale--and who can say what I'll do when it sells? That said, I wonder what Dowland would have play if he had had the choice.
- Hi Carl. It's not bad, is it? And so cheap. You could get a fine 8-string after selling your Lundberg. Only eight single strings to tune - what a relief. :-) Good luck, whatever you choose to do!

I only had it for a week. I thought it was excellent for the price, but it reminded me that I prefer lutes, so sold it. For the price, it can't be beaten. At least, the price it was when I bought it in 2015 - £450, including hard case.

Robert, I just got one of these. Ibanez has actually just discontinued making them, so if you're interested I'd jump on one of the handful for sale online. Like Rob says you can't beat for the price - even if you don't use the extra strings it's got a "bigger" sound than six strings of the same price range. I'm having a lot of fun with mine.
