      I'm from Melbourne. This also caught me off-guard. Greatly enjoyed visiting MONA when I visited Hobart and surrounds. In general, I think Hobart still beats Melbourne on some other unique points, e.g. nicer harbour, Antarctica museum/museum exhibits, Sea Shepheard ships docking, Nant distillery, and 'cosier' feel. Conversely, Melbourne is much bigger in general, and more diverse. So I hope both places continue to develop. Being so close to one another, I think it will be great if we can encourage more culturally-interested tourists to visit both Melbourne and Hobart.

    • @AshLilburne
      @AshLilburne 2 года назад +53

      Im not sure if they feel threatened, its not like they are trying to run MONA into the ground here. 90% of the people visiting MONA are there specifically for that reason, whereas a location in the CBD of such a large city will expose a lot more people to the arts that may have never experienced it otherwise. Which in turn could lead more people to then travel to Tasmania and visit MONA

    • @devilpizza123
      @devilpizza123 2 года назад +58

      The video is slightly misleading in that Melbourne isn't building NGV Contemporary in response to MONA, it's building it as part of the upgrades happening to the Arts Precinct as well as the limited space available at the current NGV building. Melbourne has always been an Art focused city so a new gallery of this scale was pretty much inevitable.

  • @bingo000
    @bingo000 2 года назад +65

    Been to Mona once before, it's a sensory overload and stands on its own as an avant garde museum. NGV caters to a different audience and judging from the press photos, it will be more focused on hosting and promoting contemporary art and artists from around the globe. Another difference here is that Melbourne City is behind the arts in our city and the new NGV build and if it wasn't for David Walsh, not sure Tasmania today would have any attractions of that magnitude to speak of beside its nature. Also Tasmania and Melbourne aren't in a competition, I enjoy visiting Tasmania for it's beauty and quiet lifestyle and love being in Melbourne for its restaurants, culture, shopping and events that take place. Both have very different things to offer different people.

My favourite is the 200 year old sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place that have been transformed into cafes and shops overlooking a park and the waterfront. Behind them looms a high mountain that is snowcapped in winter. I've been to plenty of cities in Europe that are the same size (around 250,000 people), but Hobart is nicer than any of them.

    Who would have thought that Hobart would loom large over the art world? Amazing. Although I do wonder how your average low-level artist benefits from pretentious and extremely expensive 'art-posturing' buildings. We seem to have reached an age where all art is performance art of a sort. You can't make it big without being over the top.

    Hilarious🤣.. (I'm a Kiwi... so go figure)
    I've been to Melbourne a few times (family) and Hobart once (My mother's bucket list).
    We loved Hobart & Tasmania, and liked Melbourne (lost my father in the Melbourne Museum - he walked 9 blocks back to the hotel!)
    To me, the shortest flight is between them so why not visit both (and p#$% off Sydney to boot 😁)

    I will say however, Hobart is an infrastructure nightmare. As a Tasmanian, you see it a lot. Older generations dont want any change what so ever, so all the roads are unequipped for the population growth, there is no decent public transport and we currently have a housing crisis. I cant wait to move out of Tasmania

      Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20.
      Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho.
      Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!

    Both of these major projects, the extant MONA in Hobart and The Fox NGV in Melbourne in the pipeline, have been designed by Greek Australian architects. Nonda Katsalidis completed MONA and has won prestigious awards for his design and Angelo Candalepas whose winning design for The Fox NGV will be constructed in Melbourne. Katsalidis and Candalepas have also designed many other significant buildings throughout Australia and have won awards for those as well. They are both just two of the many Greek Australians architects who have been involved with major building projects throughout Australia, in all the major cities as well as regional areas.

    TBH I'd much rather they spent some money on the State Theatre complex,
    take that embarrassment of a Spire down..which sits like a hat on the building,
    and finish the building properly.
    In the construction phase I would walk by it on a weekly basis and the reinforcing rods that were protruding
    from the exterior walls were just cut off and a bit of mortar smeared across them.
    To this day if you walk past you can still see this eyesore , and displayed for all the world
    to see on Google street view.
