I agree, they're investing in the wrong things and destroying the city's soul to turn it into an "event" city with ego-driven projects. I laughed when the video called it a "sustainable" city. When so much is invested in industry, car infrastructure, glass buildings (the most unsustainable kind of buildings there is) etc, there is no sustainability in mind. Could do so much better indeed.

Gothenburg was voted worst cycling city in all of Sweden a month or so ago, 2 highways run through the city center and 4 highway interchanges next to each other just north of the central railway station create total isolation and segregation.
Just got back from Gothenburg and I was pretty impressed at how liveable this city is. It has great potential. There is nothing wrong with spreading out as long as you have services and good transport infrastructure. Urban centres become satellite cities. It is manageable now because it has less than a million people. Good management means preparing for future growth. I'd like to go back and explore this interesting part of the world again. It has an interesting history too.

GBG is one of my fav cities and i hope it improves over time!
The thing is it's not sustainable in some unique way. A lot of cities in northern parts of Europe have more greenery than streets paved with concrete because people are used to living in close proximity to green areas and not be cramped in urbanized places.
@@winnied87 There's also a law in Sweden that all cities need to have 1/3 green space. But green space a sustainable city does not make. There needs to be way more to call it that.
Yea, he kinda skipped over the part about the massive train tunnel under the city and a few other minor details, like Älvstaden and other small sub-projects they have going on...
Gothburger here, born and raised! Great video, although I agree with the other comments about not mentioning Västlänken. Another interesting ongoing megaproject is "Västsvenska Paketet", where Västlänken actually is one of several parts. They recently replaced one of our main bridges (Göta Älvbron --> Hisingsbron) a few years ago and that was an awesome sight to behold, over a couple of years time. Thanks again, well done!
I'm from Gothenburg and it's crazy how much it has changed the past 5 years. It used to be more european style but now there are modern tall buildings/skyscrapers everywhere. Completely changed cityscape
I should clarify, they haven’t removed the european style. They also haven’t demolished too many buildings, more so built next to/on existing structures. There are also neighborhoods that haven’t changed, keeping the traditional european style. I don’t think it has destroyed my city (yet), but it’s a major change.
i'm in canada and my university's residences have a platinum LEED certification. Its really hard to get. its École de technologie supérieures (ÉTS) for those wondering.
Gothenburg is also constructing the tallest building in all of the nordics atm. Karlatornet at 245m. It's an impressive sight to behold as a local to the area.
long time fan and great to finally see a video about my hometown - two major gbg projects worth mentioning are Karlatornet (73 floors/ 245 m ) and Västlänken (2bn project to revamp the cities transport and road infrastructure) - the scale of the project is much more interesting than it seems as tunnels, tracks and highways are being built around historic parts of the city. an extra detail about Karlatornet, in it's current half built state has taken over the record for tallest building in Sweden. Great video again and looking forward to seeing more of Gothenburg soon
Project Platinan is another Platium Leed certified project that is been complete in Gothenburg. Hotel / Office space on the water front. Cirka (1,8 bn sek / 162 mil usd)
Thank you for making a video about my city! Was so happy to see this :) Surprised you didn’t mention the new train tunnel that will go below the city, as well as Karlatornet which will be the tallest building in Scandinavia. A lot of your footage is outdated, most prominently the first few seconds where none of the new projects can be seen. Felt more like a commercial for Skanska and Citygate... I hope you're coming back!
I live in Gothenburg and yes, there is a lot going on, kinda looking forward to seeing some projects getting finished. Everywhere you look you'll see at least 2-3 cranes building something. However, it was badly needed, the heart of the city has been painfully crowded for years.
My university campus in India - Manipal University Jaipur - is LEED Platinum certified. Now I can relate with how Gothenburg is one of the most sustainable places on the planet.
Proud to be a young electrician in this big project I lived in Gothenburg for 10 years and I can say it looks a lot different than the day I came here ✌️🙌🏻
You should make a video on Karlatornet (Karlatower) also in gothenburg. It's going to be the tallest building in the Nordics and quite unique when it comes to buildings in the north.
Not mentioned in the video: Gothenburg has become a giant car maze where every other road is blocked or limited to one direction. The slow flow and long lines of traffic with cars standing still, spewing exhaust fumes at idle in the centre should offset the sustainable strategy just fine.
Yeah they're not being very objective with those claims of sustainabiltiy. A city built around industry and car traffic is NOT sustainable. Not by a long shot.
This. Everywhere in gothenburg the road infrastructure for anything other than public transport has been intentionally sabotaged causing huge traffic jams. For example many dual lane roads have gotten smaller with bus stops merging two lanes into one on many locations around the city "for pedestrian safety" instead of just setting up a traffic light
Living in Gothenburg for 2 years and now moving to Oslo. Gothenburg is really an amazing city. It's so easy to reach the city center, transportation is really good ( its expensive). Only short bus ride to the lake and train to the beach. Also Slottskogen is amazing place to spend summer days or just having fun with friends. Amazing!
Very good video indeed. Malmö - Sweden’s third city - has also gone through an amazing transformation - with a focus on sustainability. I think it would be a very good subject for a future video. Warm welcome.
I come from Gothenburg, but have lived in Stuttgart, Germany for a bit over a year now. When I went back last time in August, I was really surprised by the amount of new buildings which had popped up. I hope to eventually move back in a few years. Will be interesting to see how it's changed by then.
I was thinking about buying a pre-fab house from one of the Scandinavian companies that produce them. It's really cool, you can choose among many designs and the building is very fast.
Grew up in Gothenburg. It was very cool to see this video and recognize landmarks from my childhood - Fiskekyrkan at 0:21, the Poseidon statue at 7:00-7:05, and Ullevi stadium behind the new building - and not transformed beyond recognition by skyscrapers and urban decay. But I do remember the insane scramble to move into an apartment that was large enough for two, and later three kids - from a studio apartment where my parents slept on a foldout couch in the living room and my sister and I shared a bunkbed in the hallway, to a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom place near Avenyen and the old opera house. A great city for walking in.
its funny how little people seem to understand about sweden from the comments. somehow sweden remains mythical in all viewpoints. either its a caliphate in the making or its a futuristic supersociety, either its always dark and snowy or there is beautiful untamed wilderness. lol

Gothenberg city should pay you some commissions - cause many of us are now planning to visit Gothenburg, a city I have never heard of until this video.
Göteborg is not actually that bad for PV according to some random map I found online. It's more suitable than most of UK, being equal to southern England or northern Germany.
its just green washing. leed classification only means it employs lots of high-tech products, it was created to promote high-tech companies. same as the "green city" concept. they would not give any consideration to an expansion of the city based on traditional urbanism using natural materials, but they will give the HIGHEST praise to a bunch of glass office towers with some complex ac system and special glass panels and solar power, wich will be more expensive and most importantly, it will brake down and will have to be replaced in 20 years. and the buildings wont last 50. perpetual business for contractors and tech companies, it was never about the envoirnment. you dont make much money making a solid brick building that lasts hunderds of years,
As someone who has been born and raised in Gothenburg, I am truly sad to see the direction the city has taken. All the tall buildings popping up everywhere are destroying the ambiance of the city.
i believe any city wich doesnt have a skyscraper yet shouldnt build any. the minute you build one they spread like wildfire and take up all the good looking parts of the city. they remove the views and the sun from the people, they create wind tunels and they never lower the rent prices anywhere they are built, its just a way for developers to especulate and for criminals to launder money with real estate.
Visited Gothenburg 20 years ago, just as they were starting the process of reclaiming the water front, high on my bucket list is to go back and see how that turned out
Waiting time for apartments are 7-10 years, crime is soaring in the suburbs, buses and trams are raising the prices and traffic is a huge problem but otherwise it is a fantastic city with fantastic people
Gothenburg is also building northen Europes tallest skyscraper. The 245 metre tall Karlatornen. It is set to be done in 2024 and the penthouse at the top was bought for 6,4 million dollars
It’s funny how this video focused on basically just Citygate which, even though it’s a cool project, doesn’t even count among the three most important developments in the city. He didn’t even mention Västlänken (commuter line being built cutting through the city center), Karlastaden (housing the tallest skyscraper in the nordics) or Masthuggskajen (reclamation project that will expand the city centre), all of which are far more ambitios projects.
As a person from Gothenburg, calling the Citygate construction “fast” is an understatement. It literally felt like one day there was just a big slab of concrete is the skyline, and the next day there was a massive office building.
Fantastic vid as always, especially as GBG's been my home for 8 years. Bit surprised not mentioning Karlatornet given it's gonna seriously tower over CityGate, but hopefully that means you'll be back to cover that! Love all the investment and cool construction around Gothenburg - less keen on all the works causing the roads to move around like the staircase at Hogwarts!
Great video! But it leaves a few questions unanswered. Does City Gate have some kind of battery storage to be able to rely on solar energy? And what impossible freeway is turning into a boulevard? I live in Gothenburg and there are always lots of constructions going on, it's hard to keep track of them all.
it wont rely solely on solar. Leed certification is extremely biased towards high tech solutions despite most of the time they are not necessary. they would never give any recognition to an expansion of the city based on traditional urbanism and natural building materials wich would be heaper and last for centuries, being more sustainable by nature. they will give the highes classification to a glass skyscraper and glass ofice blocks wich rquire extensive technology and more money, specially on a city that doesnt need a skyscraper
Oi, I expected at least half of the video to be about the "big dig", the Västlänken "regional metro" tunnel and the recently replaced central bridge. Karlatornet is a really nice looking skyscraper too, coming up on the other side of the river, to be the highest in Sweden.
I’ve spent a lot of time surveying in Gothenburg, even with the epic amount of construction it’s still quicker to get around than in Stockholm. Side note did they do all the filming in the 3 days of summer 😂
You missed out our largest project, Väst Länken (The West Link Project). Many argue that this is a total failure and is heavily delayed and costs soar. This project have made Gothenburg to a huge dig site and have cause both economical problems for small businesses and huge traffic problems. So not everything is great in Gothenburg! But I like my city anyway. :)
I’ve visited Göteborg with my dad inumerable times during my childhood, the city is absolutely perfect, and that’s coming from a guy who prefers the countryside
love how the nordic countries made themselves the "green" champions of the world when the only thing that they did was move the production of electricity and fossil fuels to other places in the world. the fact that norway is considered "green" is even more of a joke
The biggest issue in Gothenburg for those living in the suburbs is commuting using the public transport. Although Swedish public transport is really good as it reaches every corner imaginable, if you want to get anywhere in the city it takes you anywhere between 50 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes depending on the time. It is a huge problem which needs to be solved because 2 hours everyday for transportation is not acceptable. For the majority of people who use cars, we are taxed both when entering the city and going back to the suburbs which can be aroud 5USD daily at rush times. That itself combined with the hike in price of fuel and 3 USD per hour parking fees makes it super expensive to be able to commute to college or work on a car. Either you sacrifice 2 hours of your life everyday or pay your way out of it if you have enough money. This is the dirty reality which is being overlooked. Also the new metro system being built will only facilitate a few areas which still leaves majority of the suburbs only connected through the current slow transport system. Also the public transport one way ticket costs 4USD which is a total joke. For someone which an average Gothenburg salary of 22k USD, this type of expense is terrible and even worse for the students.

There needs to be way more to call it that.
and none of this is sustainable
Was in Goteborg this summer and toured the Uni3 campus. Seriously impressed by it and the projects currently in development!

I'm from Gothenburg and it's crazy how much it has changed the past 5 years. It used to be more european style but now there are modern tall buildings/skyscrapers everywhere. Completely changed cityscape
.. That just sounds horrible
@@janniesneed4511 nope that sounds awesome. I am jealous. Skyscrapers are so much cooler.
@@N1ckZ Boring and ugly architecture
I should clarify, they haven’t removed the european style. They also haven’t demolished too many buildings, more so built next to/on existing structures. There are also neighborhoods that haven’t changed, keeping the traditional european style. I don’t think it has destroyed my city (yet), but it’s a major change.

I'm skeptical that the solar park will power the building in the dead of winter. There just isn't a lot of daylight - about 6.5 hrs per day
long time fan and great to finally see a video about my hometown - two major gbg projects worth mentioning are Karlatornet (73 floors/ 245 m ) and Västlänken (2bn project to revamp the cities transport and road infrastructure) - the scale of the project is much more interesting than it seems as tunnels, tracks and highways are being built around historic parts of the city.
an extra detail about Karlatornet, in it's current half built state has taken over the record for tallest building in Sweden.
Great video again and looking forward to seeing more of Gothenburg soon

Imagine driving in Central Gothenburg lol. Take the damn tram
That is what public transport is for. Like london, you're stupid if you try to drive there.

A great city for walking in.

its just green washing. leed classification only means it employs lots of high-tech products, it was created to promote high-tech companies. same as the "green city" concept. they would not give any consideration to an expansion of the city based on traditional urbanism using natural materials, but they will give the HIGHEST praise to a bunch of glass office towers with some complex ac system and special glass panels and solar power, wich will be more expensive and most importantly, it will brake down and will have to be replaced in 20 years. and the buildings wont last 50. perpetual business for contractors and tech companies, it was never about the envoirnment. you dont make much money making a solid brick building that lasts hunderds of years,
As someone who has been born and raised in Gothenburg, I am truly sad to see the direction the city has taken. All the tall buildings popping up everywhere are destroying the ambiance of the city.
Eller hur
It looks dystopian. Unfortunate to see European nations in general going down this route.
i believe any city wich doesnt have a skyscraper yet shouldnt build any.
the minute you build one they spread like wildfire and take up all the good looking parts of the city.
they remove the views and the sun from the people, they create wind tunels and they never lower the rent prices anywhere they are built, its just a way for developers to especulate and for criminals to launder money with real estate.

Leed certification is extremely biased towards high tech solutions despite most of the time they are not necessary. they would never give any recognition to an expansion of the city based on traditional urbanism and natural building materials wich would be heaper and last for centuries, being more sustainable by nature. they will give the highes classification to a glass skyscraper and glass ofice blocks wich rquire extensive technology and more money, specially on a city that doesnt need a skyscraper
that skyscraper is the ugliest thing in the whole city.
From what suburb does it take an hour to reach the city?
sweden is an amazing place
