      @@veotisthompson1227 I did the same. Actually I got 15 in there, and a FX4. Right now the ammonia is spiking. Been just under a week hopefully it stabilizes soon. The tank I got was used. And I rinsed the substrate that was in there but it’s got me wondering just what kind of nightmare the previous owner had going on before I got it. Cuz I can’t explain why it keeps spiking sooooo high like this. Nothing I’ve seen before. Not like this anyways. And it’s got me thinking the previous person was one of them ppl who gave up and just let everything go until it looked like chocolate milk 🙄 who knows. But I’m thinking I might just remove that gravel and replace it with something new for piece of mind

    I've been binge watching cichlid videos from all the experts. I like this one because I have a extra 55 gallon I need to do something with. I tell you it's been tough trying to decide because I've only been in this hobby for a month. I have another 55 that's a community tank, which is a F.F. style tank. I know some people will say cichlids aren't for beginners. but thanks to channels like this one and others so much info and guidance is available. I'm taking my time, doing my research and trying to make sure I will make correct choices. As of now I'm leaning towards Mbuna. The yellow labs and the blues that were shown in this video. My ? is will black blasting sand work as a substrate or would regular sand be better?
    I really would appreciate any feed back. Thanks

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  4 года назад +2

      Slate is often used and is flat in shape.

    • @thomasdesposito1590
      @thomasdesposito1590 3 года назад +1

      I agree that slate is fantastic for mbunas and other Malawian cichlids. I also have successfully used white tufa rock and lava rocks, and especially with the tufa rock it also aids in hardening up the water and raising ph which these fish really thrive on. It's not written on stone though (pardon the pun). I have seen these fish do well in slightly acidic water but again they look and do best in harder water/ph. I have successfully used certain realistic fake plants as well but no matter what rock is always the main decoration in the tanks. I also have successfully had peacocks and Mbuna in my larger (125+) tanks. These cichlids are my absolute favorites for many years now and have had a lot of different types like species tanks, mixed, some of my reasons for them being my favorites are when you have a big established tank with mbuna to me is akin to a bustling city center (Times Square, Piccadilly Circus, etc) . They are incredibly smart fish and always are moving with intension unlike fish say in a planted tank of peaceful fish like neon tetras, while beautiful in large schools regardless to me, they just move around like zombies if that makes sense lol. I'm not knocking any of those fish though as i currently have a 75 planted tank with neons, cardinals, mollys and plates, Cory catfish, several types of gouramis, and a few discus and it is just so beautiful, peaceful and like a living painting that almost acts like Valium to me lol. I say that because every night I lay in bed and watch that tank and it just is so relaxing to watch, and one of the reasons I put it next to my bed. But just happened to see this channel in my "you may like" section and turned into a huge fan in a matter of hours watching your videos! Seriously nice job I can tell just from listening to you speak that you have an incredible passion for these beautiful aquatic animals just like me. Thanks man have a nice day.

      I used two cameras and two lenses for this video. The intro section with the close-ups of the fish was shot with my Canon M50, using a 28mm EF-M macro lens. The main video was shot on my Canon EOS R, using my 24-70mm f2.8 L lens.

    The same fish was in a 100 ltr tank but I had only 20 in there. They did fine as well. Key note I got the same size fish all at once so hey didn’t become aggressive with each other.

    Your logic of keeping only Mbuna in a 55, would that hold true also for a 33 gallon long tank? I have a 33 long, same dimensions as a 55 only shorter, about 13x13x48, would that be fine for around 10 Mbuna?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 года назад +1

      Hmmm...I’ve never kept them in a 33 long. If it were me, I’d put in some dwarf mbuna like Saulosi. Less of a bio load, yet still getting to enjoy the mbuna look and behavior.

    Nobody ever seems to mention the 65. Seems to be the best compromise in so many ways.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  Год назад +1

      I have a 65. I am actually getting ready to re-scape it soon. I think the issue with the 65 for many people is that it is only 36" wide. This is fine for smaller mbuna, but in my experience most larger Malawi cichlids do better in 48" wide tanks. With that being said, I have had a bunch of ACs in my 65 before and it was working okay.

    I’m curious how many gallons of water you use on a weekly basis to maintain all your aquariums?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  Год назад +1

      I’ve never calculated the water usage, but it’s actually far less than most people would think. I’ve been trying to incorporate live plants into most of my tanks, which aids in natural filtration and reduces the frequency of water changes. I’ve also found that with more frequent testing using test strips, I’m able to better monitor when a tank needs a water change. Because of these reasons, my water change frequency has decreased. Living in California, I try to be extra cognizant of water usage.

      @@TazawaTanks Thanks for the reply, only ask as I’m a student of most things I become interested in and have always wanted a cichlid tank. The seemingly high water change requirement has made me abandon the idea. All the videos make me want to get into the hobby at the same time discourage me from pulling the trigger due to becoming a slave to maintenance. Guess I’ll live through your videos. Beginners shouldn't keep mixed malawi cichlids in anything smaller than 75 gallons or they are likely to struggle with aggression. The extra 6 inches in width makes a big difference.
