As well as Jennifer Holliday felt that her popularity was hampered by Janet Jackson and why Jennifer lost all that weight, but it still did not put her up in Janet’s popularity ranking. Even on soul train, the absolute best female dancer that show ever had, Damita Jo Freeman, was overlooked because she was not pretty, and they replaced her very quickly. And it is only now that Damita is being remembered. So there was always a preference for looks in the music industry. You didn’t have to be hot to get in but the better talents were overlooked for the ones with better looks. The only difference between then and now is that then there was still a predominance of genuine talent. Sure, people hated Diana Ross but regardless she had talent, people thought Stephanie Mills was a little snob but Stephanie had talent, people drooled over Chaka Khan but Chaka had talent. Okay, and Natalie Cole was another powerhouse who got overlooked like Pattie, Roberta Flack, Cheryl Lynn, Jennifer Holiday, Phyllis Hyman, and several others. Natalie was certainly a better singer than Stephanie but Steph was still much bigger in popularity. Though regardless, all these singing divas had talent, and only a few lacked it for singing such as Janet for one, though she made up for it dancing. Janet couldn’t sing but she was the baddest female dancer out there. And I believe that Patti is getting all the glory she deserved all along today because that talent of yesteryear is lacking today. People are missing that true talent and looking back into the past and reaching for those oldies but goodies again.
