We finally fought Surt! He was a much different fight than Valravn.
We’ve officially opened the gate and are on our way to rescue Dillion.
This game is so beautiful. Even in it’s most dark and twisted moments, there’s beauty to it.

Senua is Irish. During this time people effected by "Darkness" - mental illness, were often banished into the "wilds" to conquer this evil entity. During Senua's time in the woods, her village was attacked by the Vikings (North Men). They killed everyone and performed a sacrifice of Dillon (The Blood Eagle). This prompts her journey into Hel (Viking land of the dead) to retrieve his soul.

You're really getting the hang of the controls I see, already creating your own methods of fighting different kind of enemies. Just wanted to say props! Knew you would find the combat system satisfying ;) Later on in the game though, with the soundtrack kicking in during battle sequences, my god, it reached bloodlust proportions for me XP

She is Celtic from an island called Orkney and the ones who raided her village were Vikings. That's why there is a line of monologue that says "to these gods you cannot pray", it's because they are Viking gods, like Hela.

The voice-acting and performance of "Senua", as well as motion-capture, are astonishing. It not only looks gorgeous graphically but you can feel the emotion that was put into her character. I couldn't help but deeply feel for her in every scene. Even, or especially, when there was no dialogue. For me Hellblade was probably the most visceral, uniquely atmospheric, psychologically draining, compelling game experience I've had in ages. Just remarkable.
It's gruesome yet historically accurate, but Dillion was sacrificed to the Nordic gods through a notorious ritual called "Blood Eagle". If gore unsettles you please read at your own risk. Usually a method only bestowed upon those who had commited the worst of crimes/acts by Viking standards, as I recall. The victim's back would be spread open with a knife, the loose skin acting like "wings" of an eagle. After that the ribcage would be removed and the organs thrown over the victim's shoulders. Only if you were able to endure all of this without screaming would you be allowed to enter Valhalla (basically Nordic heaven).

I just watched a bit of the dev diary where she talks about her role as Senua. She really took it on and made it her own. I do feel every cut scene with her so clearly. It makes the game so much more real. I really love it. I can see how others if they haven't played it don't quite understand the appeal maybe but, playing it yourself is a whole different experience.
I figured that was his skin.. what a horrible death. I wonder what they considered the "crime" to punish him so much more than the other villagers. Although I think they all died horrible deaths in general. I'm gonna read up more on this. Sometimes it's hard to catch all the little details when I don't know the mythology behind it all.

    • @justjdnl
      @justjdnl 6 лет назад +6

Marz I have my theories on why Dillion was killed in a different way than the other villagers, but I will mention it when I know for sure it becomes spoiler-free.
I had some luck acquainting myself with the mythical culture as it's presented in this game, prior to my own playthrough. Thanks to the tv show Vikings. Made me appreciate Hellblade so much more :)

Marz and the most amazing part is that Melina (Senua's voice actress) is actually a video editor at the company and has never acted before. Her performance is also why she won 'best performance' at the Game Awards

@@Marzz Hey there!! I know I'm four years late, but I would really recommend watching Jackson Crawford's youtube video on the Blood Eagle. Vikings is a pop-culture fictionalization of the Eddas, not necessarily historically accurate. Crawford is a professor of Norse language and mythology, so he knows more of what's up. As someone else has mentioned, Viking is not a race, it's a term describing sea-raiders. Many parts of Norse society did not take part in the violence the raiders enacted. History is never so simple as 'good' and 'evil.'
The Vikings themselves were not completely violent, though they were frequently engaged in conflict since they constituted the Norse warrior class. They were among the widest-travelled group of people during their time of prominence, enabling the Norse to come into contact with a vast array of distant cultures, from Asian to African to Indigenous 'Canadian.' Reasons for why that violence spread (especially to England in the Early Medieval Period), as I understand it, are linked to the spread of Christianity before and after the Roman collapse, as well as to pre-existing methods of warfare between Nordic peoples.
Just like the Celts, including Picts like Senua, the Norse were eventually forced to convert under pain of death or assimilation. However, unlike the Nordic languages, the Pictish language does not survive. Under Charlemagne, the Pictish resistance was gradually worn down, but the people themselves were not wiped out by any means. They faced numerous threats beforehand and concurrently, including from Vikings, whose people were also being pressed by the Romans. We have their graven images in rock, biased accounts from the Romans invading what we now know as the UK, archaeological finds, preserved and living folk memory, and DNA reconstruction matching their descendants from Northern Scotland and Ireland. Pictish, however, is a term applied to those people by Romans, apparently referencing their woad tattoos and/or body paint. Whether those tattoos/body paints were worn for battle/ceremonially or on a more general basis is unknown.
Another note: We don't know much about the deities of the insular Celts, but archaeology is helping us re-discover some deities that were lost. Senua is the reconstructed name of a Pictish goddess recently re-found in the UK!
If you read all this, you're the best. I didn't expect to write this much, oof. This is all making a very long, complicated story very short.

What Druth is referring to at the 1:05 mark is his escape from the northmen. He related last episode how he ran into the fires the northmen had set during a raid to escape his captors, to which they called him a fool and left him for dead. He also stated before that the northmen believe Surt provides them their fires during their raids, and so, in that way, he did survive his own fire trial of Surt, but it is not similar to the trials Senua is going through now.
To answer your question as to if Druth had been in Helheim, he has told Senua that the northmen captured him, and brought him to Hel for 6 years.
By the way, enjoying your playthrough, and looking forward to the next one. Enjoy!

This is how you know this is a trippy game. When Senua's voices ask, "Have you ever died before? It's a serious question...," you can see Marz actually contemplating the following monologue and perhaps relating it to her own life. The content of that monologue is pretty heavy.

The look in your face at Surt was abject terror lol. In any case, when the voices talk about Senua "dying" its pointing out the type of ego death that takes place in mental illness.. kinda like being humiliated beyond your capacity causes Bipolar to trigger its symptoms. Also the reason you found the Raven eating seen to be disturbing might because they may have been insinuating something bad happened to Senua in the woods, so yes that is disturbing.

  • @_MrSaud

Yes, the girl who played Senua on motion capture; Melina Juergens, is fit. Before the role she had to train and be on diet for like 6 months to be in the shape they wanted for the role. So much effort went into making this game

  • @vicmanpergar

Wohoo...U made nicely with Surt. Well done.
The game is dark and gonna be more disturbing. But how's it supossed to be when it's talking about our inner fears? mental illness, the darkest corners of our minds. And the suffering and sacrifice. Just keep in mind she's doing this for love. And for herself.
I love what Melina Juergens did with this role, even when she's not a profesional actress. THere're doc videos on youtube about she and her performance.

Been watching a lot of the tv series Vikings. It makes reference on what these vikings believe as well as the rituals. As for poor Dillion he was a victim of a Blood Eagle. A horrible and painful death where they string him up, cut his skin down the spine, break hid spine apart and fold the ribs outwards to form a shape of a eagles wings. Just a absolute horrible horrible time to live.
If the victim screams out as this process is carried out the victim will not reach Valhalla and will be forced to hel with no honor.
Don't wiki the Blood Eagle Marz at this time, because the very last sentence in it has a spoiler that u haven't seen in a cut seen.

From the Valraven boss fight, you remember how there were times when he would turn into a shadow and that you couldnt hit him unless you used your focus first? Well, the same thing will happen with future enemies. Just know that you dont have to wait for your focus you refill. You can actually parry enemies when they're in shadow-form, and it will turn them back into physical beings which you can then attack. Parrying helps refill your focus/health.
Also i'm pretty sure you can parry every weapon-wielding enemy, including the big ones.

  • @ResonanceZ
    @ResonanceZ 6 лет назад +1

The enemies in the game are really balanced well and they feel completely fair. Just about every move, including from bosses, can be parried too so you definitely feel a rush when you time one correct (especially a boss!). I already talked about Melina on the last video, but they really nailed all the voice actors for the game. You can really live the story through their acting. As for disturbing parts of the game, I didn't feel like it got really disturbing. There are some more horror parts, but it never gets too bad or stays for too long. Enjoyed the video like always, hope to see more soon!

    • @Marzz

I've seen LP's of this wonderful game before but hesitated to rewatch. It is very affecting and pushing emotional limits. The way the developers have interwoven gameplay mechanics and some symptoms of schizophrenic illnesses, like seeing special signs here and there, giving them an own meaning, often a foreboding, living through nightmares when awake, is breathtaking. When Senua's view gets, well, wishy-washy it's graphically announcing some impending doom, usually enemies.^^ And it's draining in a good way when Senua's facing her inner demons. Just imagining what must have gone through her mind when she left for her own reasons to eventually find her love dead, the self-blaming and -hatred, that's intense. The norse mythology parts are decent and most precise. Regarding the historical changes of that time, the developers were also quite accurate. Only the blóðörn, blood eagle, is just a myth they've unnecessarily included here. As if the loss of one's love could be anyhow increased in pain. Doesn't disturb the story though, so it's worth to endure the partially repetetive fights. The atmosphere alone tells its own story.
To switch between this game and The Last Guardian would mean a few weeks of therapy to me, however.^^

It reminds me of playing cricket (or baseball). You face fast bowl after fast bowl, and then the bowler/pitcher sends in a slower delivery which totally throws you off. That's what the big battle after the gate was like. The guy is so slow it makes timing dodges an absolute nightmare. :)

That was an amazing and exciting Episode, you defeated Surt (Fire God) in first Try you are so BADASS, and yeah Surt has a different Combat style instead of Valravn, and Valravn is much more difficult. When Surt charges his Flames Sword if you dont stop him in time thats Insta Kill you immediatelly. About the Deep Voices, he Voice acted another amazing Games too, especially in Dark Souls 3, and Witcher 3, but in Hellblade the developer changed his Voice a little bit so his voice getting much more creepier.
And I see you getting better and better in Combat and you enjoy it, and you Becomes the Parry Master, Congrats, about the Giant Monsters I just called Octopus Head :D. You said the Game doesnt disturbs you yet only just once, well that because Valravn and Surt is just only the warm up, and the games start getting much more deeper and intense where you left off. Soon you need to face your Inner Fear and try to defeat it. But I am believe in you you can do it.

Your interpretation of the story is pretty much spot on. The "bandits" in question were the Northmen.
So, about the actress that played Senua, her name is Melina Juergens and yes, she did get a little fit for the role haha
The game's developer, Ninja Theory, has a RUclips channel where they constantly upload videos detailing the work from behind the scenes. There is a video, in fact, where Melina talks about how she ended up being cast as Senua and the preparation for the role. It's kinda fascinating since she says she is mainly the video editor for the company and never had an acting job before. These videos are really worth checking out and there are no spoilers for the game. In any case, this is the video in question:

Honestly I'm playing on auto and it's not that hard, I think you could up the difficulty. In auto the game kinda adapt the difficulty to you, I think...^^
And you didn't miss 6 stones, there is 2 you can't have them right now I think, because I'm just a little bit further and I saw that I missed 2 stones, so before I passed the gate to hellheim I did cheked up on the internet where they could have been(since I could go back to the path of Surtr and Valravn), and I found all I could on my way already, so there is 2 stones that you can't have right now it seems.
